Salmonella Hessarek is an uncommon serotype in Australia. We report on the investigation of a protracted outbreak of 25 cases of S. Hessarek gastroenteritis in which cases were defined as any laboratory confirmed case of Salmonella Hessarek notified to the South Australian Communicable Disease Control Branch from 1st March 2017 to 3 July 2018. We conducted a descriptive case series investigation interviewing all cases and 17 (68%) reported consuming brand X free-range eggs. Four samples of one-dozen brand X eggs were cultured for the presence of Salmonella spp. One out of the four samples returned positive for S. Hessarek in the contents of the eggs; Salmonella was not present in any of the whole egg rinses of the four samples. The high proportion of cases reporting the consumption of brand X free-range eggs and the isolation of S. Hessarek from sampling four dozen brand X eggs is an unusually strong signal implicating brand X eggs as the source of this outbreak. From a public health perspective, it is important to understand the behaviour of S. Hessarek including its ability to be present in the content of eggs and further research is recommended. The findings in this investigation into a rare Salmonella serotype highlight the need for continuous monitoring of the epidemiology of Salmonella in Australia including the epidemiology of egg-associated Salmonella outbreaks of human disease.

Egg is a nutrient dense food, however the cylical egg glut characterized by egg spoilage, quality deterioration and wastage imparts negatively on poultry farmers. Powdered dried egg provides a convenient alternative to this problem. The focus of this study was to compare and evaluate differently processed whole eggs into powder egg. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential of whole egg powders made from different processing methods. The yield, proximate composition, microbiological load from differently processed (Spray dried- commercial, Freeze dried and Dehydrated) whole egg powders were compared. The treatments in this experiment were the Spray Dried, Freeze Dried and Dehydrator Dried Whole Egg Powders represented as SDWEP, FDWEP and DDWEP, respectively. Thirty-five eggs each were used to produce the FDWEP and DDWEP while the SDWEP was obtained from United State of America. The Experimental design was a completely randomized design. Powder percentage yield of 1000g raw eggs (26.7%) and crude protein (52.78%) was highest (P<0.05) from SDWEP. Salmonella spp observed in raw eggs was destroyed by heat from the processing methods in the whole egg powders. The microbial load was within the 2cfu/g acceptable limits. This study concludes that whole egg powders produced by spray, freeze or dehydrator methods are generally accepted and serve as good alternatives to fresh eggs in addition to their use in the confectionary industry not compromising the final product quality.     L'œuf est un aliment riche en nutriments, mais la surabondance d'œufs cyclique caractérisée par la détérioration des œufs, la détérioration de la qualité et le gaspillage affecte négativement les éleveurs de volaille. L'œuf séché en poudre offre une alternative pratique à ce problème. L'objectif de cette étude était de comparer et d'évaluer des œufs entiers transformés différemment en œufs en poudre. Une expérience a été menée pour évaluer le potentiel des poudres d'œufs entiers fabriquées à partir de différentes méthodes de traitement. Le rendement, la composition approximative, la charge microbiologique de poudres d'œufs entiers traitées différemment (séchées par pulvérisation-commerciales, lyophilisées et déshydratées) ont été comparées. Les traitements dans cette expérience étaient les poudres d'œufs entiers séchés par pulvérisation, lyophilisés et séchés au dés hydrateur représentés respectivement par SDWEP, FDWEP et DDWEP. Trente-cinq œufs chacun ont été utilisés pour produire le FDWEP et le DDWEP tandis que le SDWEP a été obtenu des États-Unis d'Amérique. Le plan expérimental était un plan complètement randomisé. Le pourcentage de rendement en poudre de 1000 g d'œufs crus (26,7 %) et de protéines brutes (52,78%) était le plus élevé (P< 0,05) du SDWEP. Salmonella spp observée dans les œufs crus a été détruite par la chaleur des méthodes de traitement dans les poudres d'œufs entiers. La charge microbienne était dans les limites acceptables de 2 cfu/g. Cette étude conclut que les poudres d'œufs entiers produites par pulvérisation, congélation ou déshydratation sont généralement acceptées et constituent de bonnes alternatives aux œufs frais en plus de leur utilisation dans l'industrie de la confiserie sans compromettre la qualité du produit final.

Neonatal retinoblastoma is more widely reported in developed countries than in developing countries. We have conducted a retrospective case series to understand the nature of neonatal retinoblastoma in Malaysia due to lack of data from developing countries. A retrospective record review of 295 patients was conducted from the Retinoblastoma Registry on the National Eye Database (NED) between January 2005 and December 2019. Six out of 295 patients (2.03%) were identified as neonatal retinoblastoma in Malaysia from 2005 until 2019 compared to developed countries, in which the detection rate were 3.5 to 10 times higher. Lack of awareness among survivor parents about the risk of their newborns developing retinoblastoma in may be a contributing factor. Neonatal retinoblastoma is difficult to manage, thus close and continuous monitoring is needed in centres dedicated to retinoblastoma management.

An observational study on range enrichment was conducted on three commercial fixed-range, free-range layer farms comprising four flocks in South Australia (flock sizes ranged from 3000 to 11700 hens). Two strategies were compared; a ‘standard’ Control treatment, typical of the type of range used in the commercial industry and a highly ‘enriched’ treatment. Both treatments were implemented on the same range with no subdivisional fences. The highly enriched side of the range incorporated shade shelters, alongside a continuum of additional enrichment structures (e.g. dust baths, peck objects and hay bales). Range treatments were investigated to determine the effects on motivating hens to use the range more effectively, and their potential to lead to a decrease in abnormal behaviours, such as injurious feather pecking and cannibalism. Additionally, two farms with high levels of tree coverage were also observed. Farms were visited monthly for 6 months. At each visit several measures were recorded live: the numbers of hens out on the range, location of hens on the range and plumage score of birds outdoors and indoors. Enrichment structure utilisation on the range was measured via video recordings and continuous counts of the number of hen visits to enrichment structures within 1 h. It was found that more hens used the ‘enriched’ side of the range, in comparison with the ‘standard’ Control range treatment (P ≤ 0.01). Overhead cover provided by constructed shelters and dust bathing pits were instrumental in enticing birds out onto the range (306 ± 27 s.e.m. and 366 ± 24 s.e.m., average number hen visits). Hay bales were also highly utilised (116 ± 14 s.e.m., average number hen visits), even though the hen numbers attracted to the hay bales were not as high as shelters and dust baths. It was also observed on one property that natural cover provided by trees attracted the greatest number of hens (1652 ± 358 s.e.m., average number of hen visits). Prevailing weather conditions and the age of the flock strongly influenced the number of hens utilising the range outdoors. Furthermore, hens outside on the range had better plumage scores with lower feather loss and decreased areas of bare skin compared with birds scored in the shed.

Abstract A multilaboratory study was conducted to compare performance of the GeneQuence® DNA hybridization (DNAH) method incorporating new 24 h enrichment protocols and reference culture procedures for detection of Salmonella spp. in select foods. Six food types (raw ground turkey, raw ground beef, dried whole egg, milk chocolate, walnuts, and dry pet food) were tested by the DNAH method and by the culture methods of either the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Bacteriological Analytical Manual (FDA/BAM). Fifteen laboratories participated in the study. Four of the foods tested (raw ground turkey, dried whole egg, milk chocolate, and dry pet food), showed no statistically significant differences in performance between the DNAH method and the reference procedure as determined by Chi square analysis. Sensitivity rates for the DNAH method ranged from 92 to 100. The DNAH method, with the specific enrichment protocol evaluated, was found to be ineffective for detection of Salmonella spp. in walnuts. For raw ground beef, results from one trial showed a statistically significant difference in performance, with more positives obtained by the reference method. However, evidence suggests that the difference in the number of positives was likely due to lack of homogeneity of the test samples rather than to DNAH method performance.
