Due to COVID19 disease contingencies, in several countries, universities were forced to replace the face-to-face classes for a non-face-to-face system, also called as Emergency Remote Teaching - ERT. In this scenario, both teachers and students experienced several challenges and had to adapt to new ways of teaching and learning. The goal of this study was to understand how students experienced this situation. Through a qualitative methodology, we interviewed eight higher education students from social sciences scientific areas. Thematic analysis was used to identify and interpret patterns and themes in students’ responses. Results show that students experimented several difficulties at different levels: cognitive level (e.g., attention, concentration, and information storage), motivational (e.g., demotivation to study), tiredness; organizational (e.g., time and tasks management), and social level (e.g., interpersonal relationship and lack of contact with people). These results bring new knowledge to this problematic area and can be useful for students, teachers, and higher education institutions.

This article aims to demonstrate the ability of teachers and parents to adapt to changes -resilience, as well as to analyze the reactions of those involved in the teaching and learning process in time of COVID 19. In order to achieve the proposed objective, several Podcasts were analyzed. report how parents and teachers are making themselves flexible in the face of remote classes to overcome the difficulties of the moment and enable education to occur in this context of a pandemic. 2020 will be remembered as a year of several changes in contemporary society. The SARS-COV 2 pandemic has infected thousands of people in Brazil and the world, with physical isolation being the best form of prevention against contagion, causing transformations in various sectors of society, including education, which had to “give up” the face-to-face teaching initiating remote education to guarantee the fundamental right to education. Through bibliographic research and documentary research, the latter based on Podcasts, it was found that for years the greatest use of technology has been discussed as an instrument that facilitates learning. During remote classes, teachers and students intensified their use of cell phones -WhatsApp and applications, notebooks, internet and a virtuallearning environment to enable access to education.

As online learning environments continue to evolve, both teachers and students need to adapt to make the most of opportunities afforded by these environments for teaching and learning. The focus of this paper is on the changing role undertaken by tutors in online learning environments. We present a brief review of the current perspectives on the roles and responsibilities suggested for the e-tutor for effective teaching, and then report on a study where roles of e-tutors in a large wholly online unit were examined. The study supports the view that although the role of the e-tutor is similar to that of the face to face tutor in some respects, there are sufficient differences to make e-tutoring challenging to those who have not undertaken such online activities previously. Ongoing professional development is required to meet the changing demands of the technological environment, as well as the changing needs of students.

The COVID-19 pandemic upended the daily life of every individual throughout the world and has had an impact on every sphere of life. However, its impact on education, especially higher education, is profound. This chapter is based on a recent study, which explored teaching and learning in higher education in Bangladesh during the COVID-19 lockdown. The chapter focuses on how switching from face-to-face to online distance teaching and learning within a short period of time has created educational inequality and the digital divide among teachers and students in higher education in Bangladesh. Based on the findings from the recent surveys (teachers' and students' perspectives), this chapter provides recommendations for the stakeholders to support teachers and students during the emergency remote teaching and learning. It also shows how different strategies could minimize educational inequality and the digital divide during the time of crisis and how the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown impacted on the transition and transformation of teaching and learning in Bangladesh.

Participaram no estudo 35 estudantes seniores inscritos no 2º semestre do ano letivo 2019/2020. Ensino a distância. In a context in which lifelong education is part of national and international political agendas, Portuguese higher education institutions have been recognizing the importance of this paradigm, providing training and intergenerational moments of sharing for diverse audiences. This article intends to understand the adaptation process to home online schooling by students of a senior training - the Program 60+, from the Polytechnic of Leiria -, in the face of the pandemic situation. Based on a descriptive-exploratory case study, we seek to reflect on the process of changing from a traditional and face-to-face teaching system to the use of teaching and learning methodologies supported by digital tools. Thirty-five senior students, enrolled in the second semester of the academic year 2019/2020, participated in the study. We concluded that most subjects experienced difficulties in adapting to the new context that was imposed upon themselves unexpectedly. More than half did not participate in the proposed online activities and claim to prefer face-to-face activities. The majority of those who participated in the online activities did not experience difficulties in accessing the platforms and in the use of digital tools, which highlights the importance of training in this sort of learning. These results are in line with the national and international guidelines for the adoption of strategies that promote digital literacy. Keywords: Lifelong education. Distance learning. Seniors

The purpose of this research article is to investigate the perceptions of EFL students during the Covid-19 pandemic on implementing e-learning at university-level education in the EFL context of Afghanistan. The covid-19 pandemic has globally led the universities towards a paradigm-shift. As well as the instant development of ICT has restructured the content and the context of education particularly teaching and learning EFL. To determine the barriers and opportunities of implementing e-learning in EFL education, a qualitative method with semi-structured interview are applied to perceive the perceptions of EFL students. The study purposefully selected EFL students (N= 21 male and female) from Afghanistan universities as respondents. The data from the semi-structured interview is analyzed thematically. Results show that EFL students perceive e-learning approach as a better alternative to traditional face-to-face classrooms. Despite being regarded as an interactive method for EFL education, the lack of regular electricity connection, low internet bandwidth, high costs of ICT tools, lack of infrastructures, and lack of ICT knowledge of the teachers and students are perceived to be the barriers to implementing e-learning in Afghanistan higher education. In brief, the study contributes to establishing an in-depth understanding of the e-learning implementation and EFL instructions in Afghanistan higher education during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This article examines the effect of two Open Educational Resources (OER) - Khan Academy Collection and a teacher-authored open textbook - on mathematical course performance and attendance amongst first-year higher education Chilean students. It also aims to find out about teachers’ and students’ views on the use of OER in order to understand how these resources are used and valued. To this end, quantitative and qualitative methods were employed. Findings indicate that students in face-to-face classes who used Khan Academy resources obtained better examination grades than students who used the open textbook or relied on traditional proprietary textbooks. Moreover, it was also found that students who used both types of OER had significantly lower attendance levels than students who relied on traditional proprietary textbooks. Finally, it was observed that teachers and students had very positive opinions on the use of both the Khan Academy Collection and open textbook resources.

A comparison of face-to-face and online teaching and learning has been undertaken to ascertain the focal point that would justify the best-preferred option as far as teaching and learning in DE is concerned. This study is particularly important because as higher education institutions are faced with the challenge of huge number of prospective students seeking higher education in the midst of inadequate infrastructures, it becomes very necessary to look at DE as an option with a combination of different modes of delivering instruction. At the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), some faculties and departments, especially the distance education department, have adopted the face-to-face and online modes of delivering instruction. The pursuit of which would require a critical overview of the two modes to ascertain the strengths, weaknesses and how the two can complement each other for effective delivery of instruction to cater to a large number of students. The review suggested that academics or lecturers should endeavour to adopt the blended or hybrid mode in their teaching and learning. Policy decision makers can also use this study as it provides information on better practices as far as the blended mode of teaching and learning in higher education institutions is concerned.
