Research background and hypothesis. Pilates exercises are used in fitness and in some forms of rehabilitation programs (Di Lorenzo, 2011). Pilates focuses on core body exercise and activation of transversus abdominis muscle (TrA), multifidus and pelvic floor muscles can also be used as an exercise programme controlling body mass and blood pressure. Little is known about the Pilates exercise intensity and heart rate changes during the practice session.The aim of the current research was to study the impact of Pilates exercise on women’s body weight, core muscle performance and to evaluate heart rate changes during the practice session.Research methods included anthropometry measurements, heart rate and core muscle performance measures.Research results. In the period of 8-week Pilates training we found that it had a significant impact on women’s fat body mass and static core muscle endurance. Slightly decreasing tendency was found in BMI, but there were no statistically different changes between the results at the beginning and after 8-week training period. Measuring HR changes during the Pilates session we found that moderate HR was 98.2 (4.7) beats/min and maximum HR was 131.4 (7.2) beats/min. Maximum HR took approximately 10% and moderate HR – 90% of training period time. Discussion  and  conclusions. We  found  that  8-week  Pilates  training  period  had  a  positive  influence  on  the participants’ core muscle performance, fat body mass and minor BMI reduction. As a result, Pilates exercises could be used for the prevention of low back pain and to reduce obesity. Slight HR changes during the session indicate that Pilates exercises may have implications for the rehabilitation of individuals who have high blood pressure and cannot go in for high intensity physical activity.Keywords: BMI, heart rate, Pilates training, static endurance of core muscles

Patients with hypopituitarism have an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. GH treatment could modify the cardiovascular risk in adults with GH deficiency, but most published clinical trials involved few patients and the results are variable. We conducted a systematic review of blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trials of GH treatment in adult patients with GH deficiency published up to August 2003. Thirty-seven trials were identified. We combined the results for effects on lean and fat body mass; body mass index; triglyceride and cholesterol [high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and total] levels; blood pressure; glycemia; and insulinemia. Overall effect size was used to evaluate significance, and weighted differences between GH and placebo were used to appreciate the size of the effect. GH treatment significantly reduced LDL cholesterol [−0.5 (sd 0.3) mmol/liter], total cholesterol [−0.3 (0.3) mmol/liter], fat mass [−3.1 (3.3) kg], and diastolic blood pressure [−1.8 (3.8) mm Hg] and significantly increased lean body mass [+2.7 (2.6) kg], fasting plasma glucose [+0.2 (0.1) mmol/liter], and insulin [+8.7 (7.0) pmol/liter]. All effect sizes remained significant in trials with low doses and long-duration GH treatment. Thus, GH treatment has beneficial effects on lean and fat body mass, total and LDL cholesterol levels, and diastolic blood pressure but reduces insulin sensitivity. The global cardiovascular benefit remains to be determined in large trials with appropriate clinical endpoints.

The aim of this meta-analysis was to review the impact of a Paleolithic diet (PD) on selected health indicators (body composition, lipid profile, blood pressure, and carbohydrate metabolism) in the short and long term of nutrition intervention in healthy and unhealthy adults. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials of 21 full-text original human studies was conducted. Both the PD and a variety of healthy diets (control diets (CDs)) caused reduction in anthropometric parameters, both in the short and long term. For many indicators, such as weight (body mass (BM)), body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC), impact was stronger and especially found in the short term. All diets caused a decrease in total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides (TG), albeit the impact of PD was stronger. Among long-term studies, only PD cased a decline in TC and LDL-C. Impact on blood pressure was observed mainly in the short term. PD caused a decrease in fasting plasma (fP) glucose, fP insulin, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in the short run, contrary to CD. In the long term, only PD caused a decrease in fP glucose and fP insulin. Lower positive impact of PD on performance was observed in the group without exercise. Positive effects of the PD on health and the lack of experiments among professional athletes require longer-term interventions to determine the effect of the Paleo diet on athletic performance.

OSA (obstructive sleep apnoea) stimulates sympathetic nervous activity and elevates resting HR (heart rate) and BP (blood pressure). In the present study in a cohort of 309 untreated OSA patients, the resting HR and BP during the daytime were correlated with AHI (apnoea/hypopnea index) and compared with patients with R389R (n=162), R389G (n=125) and G389G (n=22) genotypes of the β1-adrenoreceptor R389G polymorphism. We analysed the impact of the genotype on the decline of HR and BP in a subgroup of 148 patients (R389R, n=86; R389G, n=54; G389G, n=8) during a 6-month follow-up period under CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy during which cardiovascular medication remained unchanged. In untreated OSA patients, we found an independent relationship between AHI and resting HR (β=0.096, P<0.001), systolic BP (β=0.09, P=0.021) and diastolic BP (β=0.059, P=0.016). The resting HR/BP, however, did not differ among carriers with the R389R, R389G and G389G genotypes. CPAP therapy significantly reduced HR [−2.5 (−1.1 to −4.0) beats/min; values are mean difference (95% confidence intervals)] and diastolic BP [−3.2 (−1.5 to −5.0) mmHg]. The decline in HR was more significantly pronounced in the R389R group compared with the Gly389 carriers [−4.1 (−2.3 to −5.9) beats/min (P<0.001) compared with −0.2 (2.1 to −2.6) beats/min (P=0.854) respectively; Student's t test between groups, P=0.008]. Diastolic BP was decreased significantly (P<0.001) only in Gly389 carriers (R389G or G389G) compared with R389R carriers [−5.0 (−2.3 to −7.6) mmHg compared with −2.0 (0.4 to −4.3) mmHg respectively]. ANOVA revealed a significant difference (P=0.023) in HR reduction between the three genotypes [−4.1 (±8.4) beats/min for R389R, −0.5 (±9.3) beats/min for R389G and +1.9 (±7.2) beats/min for G389G]. In conclusion, although the R389G polymorphism of the β1-adrenoceptor gene did not influence resting HR or BP in untreated OSA patients, it may modify the beneficial effects of CPAP therapy on these parameters.

Background: Barriers to physical activity for obese women include overheating, sweating, fatigue, exhaustion, and rapid heart rate. Adipose tissue acts as a thermal insulator, promoting a greater heat load on the nonfat tissues, reducing heat tolerance; exercise causes a rise in body temperature with an inability to dissipate heat contributing to reduced exercise tolerance. With difficulties of thermoregulation in the sedentary obese population, the aspect of attenuating the discomfort thus associated may encourage continuation of exercise. A heat sink applied to palmar surfaces extracts heat and cools the venous blood, reducing thermal strain by enhancing the volume of cooled venous return. We hypothesized that palmar cooling using a rapid thermal exchange device (RTX) during exercise would attenuate the thermal discomfort of exercise of sedentary obese women, improving exercise tolerance. Methods: To examine whether palmar cooling would impact exercise tolerance in obese women, 24 healthy women aged 30–45 years, with no history of long term structured exercise, a body mass of 120–135% above ideal and/or BMI between 30 and 34.9 were recruited. Women were randomized into a cooling (RXT with 16°C water circulating) or a control (RTX with 37°C water circulating) group and attended 3 exercise sessions a week for 3-months (12 weeks). Each session was comprised of 10 min body weight exercises, 25–45 min treadmill walking at 70–85% HRR with the RTX device, and 10 min of core strengthening exercises. The performance marker was a 1.5 mi walk for time; conducted on the first and last days of the intervention. Mixed models were used to model each of the outcomes as a function of thermal strain, time and treatment with covariates of speed, heart rate, distance, and the interaction of the main effects included in the model. Results: Groups were matched at baseline for key variables (time for 1.5 mile walk test, resting and exercising heart rate [HR], blood pressure [BP], waist circumference [WC], body weight, body mass index [BMI]). Among the cooling group, time to complete the 1.5mile walk test was significantly faster (31.6 ± 2.3 vs. 24.6 ± 2.5 min, pre vs. post, P< 0.01). A greater average exercising HR was observed (136 vs. 154 bpm, pre vs. post, P <0.001), with a significant reduction in WC (41.8 ± 3.1 vs. 39.1 ± 2.2 inches, pre vs. post, P< 0.01) and resting BP (139/84 ± 124/70 mmHg, pre vs. post, P < 0.025). There were no significant differences observed in the control group. Conclusion: Results indicate that exercise tolerance in obese women improved with cooling during exercise, more so than those women who did not have cooling. An improvement in blood pressure, heart rate, waist circumference, and overall aerobic fitness was observed. These findings suggest that by reducing thermal discomfort during exercise, tolerance increases, thus improving cardiovascular parameters of obese women.

AbstractThe relative mass of fat bodies of 103 adult male Vipera aspis from western France appeared to be correlated with fasting and feeding periods. There was a slow decline in mass during wintering and a rapid decline during the occurrence of spring mating; a minimum fat body mass was at the first molting time in May. This was the only time when there was a significant decline in the relative mass of the liver; vipers are noticeably emaciated during this period. Changes in relative kidney mass were correlated with the volume of the sexual segment of the kidneys, the minimum being in July. The relative mass of the testes was also linked with the sexual cycle; the minimum appeared to be in July and there was little variation between September and May.

Intrauterine fetal conditions can have lifelong cardiovascular effects. The impact of maternal diabetes mellitus on children’s cardiovascular profile is not well established. The goal of this study was to explore the association between maternal diabetes mellitus and offspring’s blood pressure (BP) ≤10 years of age. Generation XXI is a prospective birth cohort, which enrolled 8301 mother-offspring pairs, including 586 (7.1%) children of diabetic mothers. The associations between maternal diabetes mellitus and BP at 4, 7, and 10 years of age was modeled using linear regression. A mixed-effects model was built to assess differences in BP variation over time. Path analysis was used to quantify effects of potential mediators. Maternal diabetes mellitus was associated with higher BP in offspring at the age of 10 (systolic: β, 1.48; 95% CI, 0.36–2.59; and diastolic: β, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.05–1.71). This association was independent of maternal perinatal characteristics, and it was mediated by child’s body mass index and, to a lesser extent, by gestational age, type of birth, and birth weight (indirect effect proportion, 73%). No significant differences in BP were found at 4 and 7 years of age. Longitudinal analysis showed an accelerated systolic BP increase on maternal diabetes mellitus group (β, 1.16; 95% CI, 0.03–2.28). These finding were especially relevant in males, suggesting sex differences in the mechanisms of BP prenatal programing. Our results provide further evidence that maternal diabetes mellitus is associated with high BP late in childhood, demonstrating a significant role of child’s body mass in the pathway of this association.
