Language is an important device in the construction of an individual’s identity. However, Language not only identifies any particular individual but also sets its position inside the society. As a form of social behavior, language like other social behaviors, also distinguishes gender differences. This study investigates the linguistic features and the personal identity of Agueda in Nick Joaquin’s May Day Eve. This study can be used to apprehend how women were influenced by the society and the culture of the Philippines during the 1800s. The researchers use Lakoff’s Theory of Linguistic Features, and the Indexicality Principle by Bucholtz and Hall (2005) to analyze the language and identity of Agueda. Qualitative Content Analysis and descriptive research design are used to analyze thoroughly the utterances of Agueda which consist of linguistic features and stances.  Based on the linguistic features and the stances analyzed, Agueda uses emphatic stress more to show assertiveness through her utterances, she also uses disalignment more, and she likes to position herself along the affective scale. The result of the study shows that Agueda is an assertive and strong willed young woman, who likes to do whatever she wants. Her utterances also show how resentful she has become after her marriage with Badoy. The conclusion can be drawn that language is an important factor in creating an identity of a person, and this identity can be formed through the stances and linguistic features, which are greatly affected by the society, culture, and people that surround an individual.

Linguistic features become the main issue analyzed in this study since it gets much attention from numerous academics. To focus the analysis, Lakoff’s theory of Women’s Linguistic Features is adopted. In addition, Holmes (1992), Sandriani (2012) and Wright (2002)’s features of male’s language are also utilized. In the matter of collecting and analyzing the data, the researcher selects qualitative content analysis and descriptive research designs to deeply investigate Katniss’ utterances and the author’s description. The researcher herself becomes the only instrument – human instrument. Reading and selecting the data from the entire text of The Hunger Games is a part of data collection steps. Then, the procedures of data analysis contain identifying, classifying and elaborating the data. Drawing the conclusion is also the last step required. 23 utterances of women’s linguistic features and 45 utterances of men’s linguistic features eventually become the result of this study. To conclude, Katniss is linguistically portrayed as following men’s linguistic features more frequently than women’s linguistic features.

Live streaming is a media innovation that enables individuals to communicate with thousands of social media users instantly. This article explores how live streaming is used to support micromobilization in the context of social activism. It focuses on the case of live streaming from an airplane by the Swedish activist Elin Ersson. This live stream aimed to prevent the deportation of an Afghani asylum-seeker from Sweden. A qualitative content analysis of both the live streamed video and the viewers’ responses is undertaken. Two typologies for Social Behavior in live streamed micromobilization are developed, namely Digital Support Behavior (DSB) and Digital Rejection Behavior (DRB). Analyzing the content of the live stream and the viewers responses according to these typologies reveals that live streaming can support individualized micromobilization.

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is an approach that has been the subject of many practitioners and researchers in the field of language teaching and applied linguistics in many countries like the Philippines because of the recent changes and educational reforms, including lessons and curriculum innovations. Anchored to the CLT theory, this study used quantitative-qualitative content analysis of the daily lesson plans of the 7 purposively sampled Senior High School (SHS) language teachers teaching Oral Communication in Context (OCC). This aimed to identify the activities by cluster, assess which activities are CLT strategies, and determine their alignment to standards in the curriculum guide. Results revealed that the strategies used as classified through content analysis, and according to type and frequency included task-completion activity, opinion-sharing activity, mechanical practice activity, information-transfer activity, reasoning-gap activity, information-gap activity, communicative activity, information-gathering activity, fluency activity, accuracy activity, meaningful practice activity, and others. A number of strategies matched the CLT principles and features but vary on their respective percentages in each of the four phases, i.e., Activity-Analysis-Abstraction-Application (4As) of the lesson. These CLT strategies were found to be aligned to the Department of Education’s curriculum guide in terms of content standards, performance standards and assessment types. Implications of the findings to language teaching in the Philippines were drawn.

The unexpected COVID-19 pandemic has closed schools and shifted the mode of education to digital and distance learning methods. However, the socioeconomic status of students affects their access to education. Blended learning, which includes online classes, television and radio broadcasts, and modular lessons, offers a more inclusive education that caters to the needs of the students. While the subject has been discussed in the literature from the perspective of the learners, this paper explores the perceptions, experiences, and insights of teachers in the Philippines on blended learning at the time of the pandemic. This study surveyed 39 basic education teachers and analyzed the data using qualitative content analysis. The results showed an agreement on teachers' perspectives about the effectiveness of educational policies implemented and the government's response to the pandemic. Despite the flexibility in using blended learning, the teachers experienced various challenges in applying this method during the pandemic, such as readiness, technology literacy, access to technology, financial difficulties, and health risk. These findings suggest the government and other education stakeholders provide additional financial support to schools during the pandemic; enhance the professional development activities for teachers; and continue developing learning platforms allowing open access to quality and reliable educational resources during and beyond the pandemic.

This study analyzes the language used in the construction of the personal identity of Dr. Heidegger through the labels attached to him, both given by self and by others, and his stancetaking. The researcher applies Discourse Analysis to analyze the main character’s utterances. In addition, the researcher also uses Indexicality Principle by Bucholtz and Hall (2005) as a mechanism to analyze identity. Qualitative content analysis is used to analyze thoroughly and interpret text data to draw inference towards the utterances on the short story.  The result of the study show that Dr. Heidegger is labeled mostly with negative words by others, however, he responded to combat these labels by using re-appropriation or by revaluing the existing labels. Moreover, the stances taken by Dr. Heidegger are found to position himself among others. Together with the labels given by self and others, and his interlocutor(s) in his talk-in-interactions the findings reveal that the he is a strange old man, who is very curious and knowledgeable. Lastly, the conclusion can also be drawn that language and discourse are central to the construction of identities that are not always determined by a person himself, but also bound up with how others perceive him.
