This chapter discusses three animated documentaries by filmmaker Jonas Odell: Never Like the First Time! (2006), Lies (2008), and Tussilago (2010). Comparative analysis establishes many of the criteria against which these films are generally considered to be examples of animated documentary practice. In all three works, documentary audio interviews are integrated as voiceover and form the foundations on which Odell as animator-filmmaker visually “packages” interviewees’ stories in ways that render them more interesting and attractive to audiences. As with many other animated documentaries, Odell’s stylistic and technical choices strike a balance between aesthetic aspiration and documentary responsibility to the sense and meaning of his interviewees’ stories. Odell’s filmmaking choices exemplify animated documentary’s distinctive capacity to translate complex communicational codes and data – for example, interviewees’ experiences of memory, the varied styles of their spoken narrations, and the subjective quality of Odell’s interpretations of their testimonies – into concrete, highly distinctive audio-visual forms.

To analyze the psychological impacts of the introduction of new portable electric transportation modes, we implemented an experiment using a personal mobile vehicle (PMV). We investigated its effects on 2 types of the subjective quality of mobility (SQM): instrumental aspects including “easiness” and “speed”: and affective aspects including “enjoyment,” “seeing scenery,” and “enjoying the atmosphere.” The result indicated that PMV might contribute to the improvement of the instrumental aspects of SQM, but walking was regarded as more preferable in terms of the affective aspects. The results suggest that such a new transportation mode could contribute to the improvement of subjective quality of mobility, if and only if it can be introduced in an appropriate situation.

Abstract The quantity and quality of first-strand cDNA directly influence the accuracy of transcriptional analysis and quantification. Using a plant-derived α-tubulin as a model system, the effect of oligo sequence and DTT on the quality and quantity of first-strand cDNA synthesis was assessed via a combination of semi-quantitative PCR and real-time PCR. The results indicated that anchored oligo dT significantly improved the quantity and quality of α-tubulin cDNA compared to the conventional oligo dT. Similarly, omitting DTT from the first-strand cDNA synthesis also enhanced the levels of transcript. This is the first time that a comparative analysis has been undertaken for a plant system and it shows conclusively that small changes to current protocols can have very significant impact on transcript analysis.

Purpose. To identify the possibilities of institutional management as an effective tool for the internationalization of Ukrainian higher education. Methodology. The authors used the method of comparative analysis, which allowed them to highlight the general characteristics of institutional management, evaluate their effectiveness in the internationalization of Ukrainian higher education and consider their practical use to achieve maximum results. Findings. The authors used the capabilities of institutional management to define the idea and mission of the internationalization of Ukrainian higher education. The possibilities of Ukrainian higher education and its institutions were investigated. The results obtained were used as a basis for the development of a strategic plan for the internationalization of Ukrainian higher education. Originality. For the first time, the possibilities of institutional management have been used to define the idea and mission of the internationalization of Ukrainian higher education and develop a strategic plan for the internationalization of higher education in Ukraine. Practical value. The authors unified certain rules of institutional management for their more effective use in the internalization of Ukrainian higher education. This has increased their practical value. The possibilities of higher education in Ukraine were studied and eight key areas were identified, the development of which can ensure the quality of the internationalization of Ukrainian higher education.

Abstract Qualitative indicators are an important element in establishing truth in polygraph examinations. Considering this, a study of the change in the quality of the signal from the photoplethysmograph in subjects who have used nail polish is extremely relevant and requires a comprehensive qualitative study. The paper uses general scientific and empirical methods of observation and experimentation, and is a comprehensive study of the effects of nail polish on the quality of the photoplethysmograph signal. It is the first time that this type of research has been conducted using a comparative analysis of subjects who did and did not use nail polish.

Purpose The shortage of doctor of philosophy (PhD)–level applicants to fill academic and research positions in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) programs calls for a detailed examination of current CSD PhD educational practices and the generation of creative solutions. The intended purposes of the article are to encourage CSD faculty to examine their own PhD program practices and consider the perspectives of recent CSD PhD graduates in determining the need for possible modifications. Method The article describes the results of a survey of 240 CSD PhD graduates and their perceptions of the challenges and facilitators to completing a PhD degree; the quality of their preparation in research, teaching, and job readiness; and ways to improve PhD education. Results Two primary themes emerged from the data highlighting the need for “matchmaking.” The first time point of needed matchmaking is prior to entry among students, mentors, and expectations as well as between aspects of the program that can lead to students' success and graduation. The second important matchmaking need is between the actual PhD preparation and the realities of the graduates' career expectations, and those placed on graduates by their employers. Conclusions Within both themes, graduate's perspectives and suggestions to help guide future doctoral preparation are highlighted. The graduates' recommendations could be used by CSD PhD program faculty to enhance the quality of their program and the likelihood of student success and completion.
