In recent years, nano-impact electrochemistry (NIE) has attracted widespread attention as a new electroanalytical approach for the analysis and characterization of single nanoparticles in solution. The accurate analysis of the large volume of the experimental data is of great significance in improving the reliability of this method. Unfortunately, the commonly used data analysis approaches, mainly based on manual processing, are often time-consuming and subjective. Herein, we propose a spike detection algorithm for automatically processing the data from the direct oxidation of sliver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in NIE experiments, including baseline extraction, spike identification and spike area integration. The resulting size distribution of AgNPs is found to agree very well with that from transmission electron microscopy (TEM), showing that the current algorithm is promising for automated analysis of NIE data with high efficiency and accuracy.

Abstract Objective This study was conducted to isolate and characterize lytic bacteriophages for pathogenic Escherichia coli from chicken and beef offal, and analyze their capability as biocontrol for several foodborne pathogens. Methods done in this research are bacteriophage isolation, purification, titer determination, application, determination of host range and minimum multiplicity of infection (miMOI), and bacteriophage morphology. Results Six bacteriophages successfully isolated from chicken and beef offal using EPEC and EHEC as host strain. Bacteriophage titers observed between 109 and 1010 PFU mL−1. CS EPEC and BL EHEC bacteriophage showed high efficiency in reduction of EPEC or EHEC contamination in meat about 99.20% and 99.04%. The lowest miMOI was 0.01 showed by CS EPEC bacteriophage. CI EPEC and BL EPEC bacteriophage suspected as Myoviridae family based on its micrograph from Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Refers to their activity, bacteriophages isolated in this study have a great potential to be used as biocontrol against several foodborne pathogens.

Silver nanoparticles have been synthesized in 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (KH-550) solution using DMF (N, N-dimethylformamide) as both solvent and reductant at room temperature and 120°C. A characteristic surface plasmon band can be observed for the obtained silver nanoparticles from UV-vis absorption spectra, which indicate that KH-550 can serve as stabilizing agent for the formation of silver nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results show that silver nanoparticles with different sizes were obtained by simply controlling the reaction temperature.

The synthesis quality of artificial inorganic nanocrystals is most often assessed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for which new high-throughput advances have dramatically increased both the quantity and information richness of metal nanoparticle (mNP) characterization. Existing automated data analysis algorithms of TEM mNP images generally adopt a supervised approach, requiring a significant effort in human preparation of labelled data that reduces objectivity, efficiency, and generalizability. We have developed an unsupervised algorithm AutoDetect-mNP for automated analysis of TEM images that objectively extracts morphological information of convex mNPs from TEM images based on their shape attributes, requiring little to no human input in the process. The performance of AutoDetect-mNP is tested on two datasets of bright field TEM images of Au nanoparticles with different shapes, demonstrating that the algorithm is quantitatively reliable, and can thus serve as a generalizable measure of the morphology distributions of any mNP synthesis. The AutoDetect-mNP algorithm will aid in future developments of high-throughput characterization of newly synthesized mNPs, and the future advent of time-resolved TEM studies that can investigate reaction mechanisms of mNP synthesis and reactivity.

A new release of theCrysTBoxsoftware is introduced. The original toolbox allows for an automated analysis of transmission electron microscope (TEM) images and for crystallographic visualization. The existing tools, which are capable of highly precise analyses of high-resolution TEM images, as well as spot, disc and ring diffraction patterns, are extended to include a tool for automatically measuring TEM sample thickness using convergent beam electron diffraction in a two-beam approximation. An implementation of geometric phase analysis is newly available, employing one of the existing tools to identify parameters and indices of crystallographic planes depicted in the input image and allowing easier and more accurate analysis. The crystallographic visualization capabilities are extended as well. Along with the simulated diffraction pattern and atomic structure, a stereographic projection and inverse pole figure tool is newly offered. A new tool able to visualize the atomic structure of two different phases and their interface is also introduced.

Three tools for an automated analysis of electron diffraction pattern and crystallographic visualization are presented. Firstly, diffractGUIdetermines the zone axis from selected area diffraction, convergent beam diffraction or nanodiffraction patterns and allows for indexing of individual reflections. Secondly, ringGUIidentifies crystallographic planes corresponding to the depicted rings in the ring diffraction pattern and can select the sample material from a list of candidates. BothdiffractGUIandringGUIemploy methods of computer vision for a fast, robust and accurate analysis. Thirdly, cellVieweris an intuitive visualization tool which is also helpful for crystallographic calculations or educational purposes.diffractGUIandcellViewercan be used together during a transmission electron microscopy session to determine the sample holder tilts required to reach a desired zone axis. All the tools offer a graphical user interface. The toolbox is distributed as a standalone application, so it can be installed on the microscope computer and launched directly fromDigitalMicrograph(Gatan Inc.).

Studies of the nature of a surface, either metallic or nonmetallic, in the past, have been limited to the instrumentation available for these measurements. In the past, optical microscopy, replica transmission electron microscopy, electron or X-ray diffraction and optical or X-ray spectroscopy have provided the means of surface characterization. Actually, some of these techniques are not purely surface; the depth of penetration may be a few thousands of an inch. Within the last five years, instrumentation has been made available which now makes it practical for use to study the outer few 100A of layers and characterize it completely from a chemical, physical, and crystallographic standpoint. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) provides a means of viewing the surface of a material in situ to magnifications as high as 250,000X.

In a study of the properties of a Ta-Au metallization system for thin film technology application, the interdiffusion between Ta(bcc)-Au, βTa-Au and Ta2M-Au films was studied. Considered here is a discussion of the use of the transmission electron microscope(TEM) in the identification of phases formed and characterization of the film microstructures before and after annealing. The films were deposited by sputtering onto silicon wafers with 5000 Å of thermally grown oxide. The film thicknesses were 2000 Å of Ta and 2000 Å of Au. Samples for TEM observation were prepared by ultrasonically cutting 3mm disks from the wafers. The disks were first chemically etched from the silicon side using a HNO3 :HF(19:5) solution followed by ion milling to perforation of the Au side.

Considerable and continuing interest has been shown in the thin film transducer fabrication for surface acoustic waves (SAW) in the past few years. Due to the high degree of miniaturization, compatibility with silicon integrated circuit technology, simplicity and ease of design, this new technology has played an important role in the design of new devices for communications and signal processing. Among the commonly used piezoelectric thin films, ZnO generally yields superior electromechanical properties and is expected to play a leading role in the development of SAW devices.
