In 2016–2019, seasonal changes in the abundance of the harlequin ladybird Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were established in the city center of Prague, Central Europe, and in its outskirts. Adults were sampled from lime trees (Tilia spp.) at regular intervals throughout the growing season. The abundance of H. axyridis paralleled the course of abundance of its prey, the aphid Eucallipterus tiliae L., which peaks either early or late in the season. As a result, the seasonal dynamics of H. axyridis were unimodal, with a peak in the early (late June—early July of 2017 and 2019) or late (late July—mid-September of 2016 and 2018) period of the season. In the early period, there was a small (1–4 days) difference in the timing of the peak of H. axyridis between the city center and the outskirts. In the late period, the peak occurred significantly earlier (by 13–21 days) in the city center due to the warmer climate there than in the outskirts. The difference in the timing of the population peak between both locations disappeared after recalculating the calendar to thermal time (number of day degrees above 10.6°C thresholds elapsed from the end of H. axyridis hibernation). The warm mesoclimate of the city center advances the seasonal dynamics of H. axyridis, contributing to the success of this invasive species in urban habitats.

The effects of within-row plant spacing and cultivar on the incidence of Botrytis fruit rot (Botrytis cinerea) and marketable yield of annual strawberry were evaluated during the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons. Three cultivars (Camarosa, Rosa Linda, and Sweet Charlie) and four plant spacings (23, 30, 38, and 46 cm) were evaluated. Marketable yield and the incidence of Botrytis fruit rot were determined twice weekly. Cultivar and spacing effects were analyzed for three periods each season (early, late, and whole season). In 1997-98, spacing effects were observed on weekly incidence of Botrytis rot for the late period (P = 0.0925) and on cumulative incidence for the whole season period (P = 0.0795). Further analysis of the late and whole season periods revealed a spacing effect for Camarosa (P = 0.0102). Spacing also had a dramatic effect on cumulative and weekly Botrytis incidence for the late and whole season periods during the 1998-99 season (P ≤ 0.0014), when narrower spacings had higher incidence of Botrytis than wider spacings. Marketable yields were higher at narrower spacings during the early period for both seasons. Whole season marketable yields were also higher at the narrower spacings despite higher incidence of Botrytis. There were significant differences in susceptibility among cultivars.

City as a man creation is always experiencing transformation from time to time. The city center area, originating from a residence area has turned into a commercial area for trading. This transformation is recognized by the physical building change. This paper will describe building transformation in the Pasar Baru area, which is a conservation area in the city center of Bandung city, Indonesia. Colonialism left dualism of the land status in this area, formal and informal. Formal land is located on the road side shaped as row shop houses whilst the informal land lies behind the shop houses in form of urban kampong. The improvement of business and trading, demands a larger working area so space expansion is needed. The difference of land status and location makes it possible for shop house owners to expand their lot toward the kampong behind. Nowadays old shop houses as conservation buildings are hard to recognize because they have been transformed into new shop house forms. By observing the shape it’s expected that the lot expansion was the motivating factor. How did the transformation occur? Can transformation on one land lot give contribution to transformation on the city? It’s expected that the occurring transformation should not eliminate the conservation, building and area in the city center and the residential function could still be maintained.

Abstract The paper deals with the semantic theory of interpretation of A. F. Losev in his early period up to 1930 as well as in his linguistic investigations in the 70’s and 80’s of the last century. In using a word or some grammatical category, a speaker already interprets some state of affairs. In a sense, all invariant meaning seems to be metaphorical, i.e. meanings are interpretations of the world. This theory is illustrated with some famous examples by Losev himself: Garden, cabinet, the sentence “The sea was laughing”. Reflecting about his garden and his cabinet Losev shows the difference and convergence of parts and the whole: trees, flowers or the cabinet’s doors on the one hand, and the garden or the cabinet as a whole on the other. These relations are related to the meaning of words. In his early works, especially in the Philosophy of the Name and the Dialectics of Myth, Losev sees in meaning a semantic cluster which develops within speech (in sentences, narrations or myths). The works of the late period investigate invariant meanings of words and grammatical categories in the sense of some interpretive force.

In this paper, data from 12 meteorological stations located throughout the greater metropolitan area of Thessaloniki - Greece are used for the calculation of location specific monthly Heating (HDD) and Cooling (CDD) Degree Days utilizing hourly records of the last three years. The HDD are calculated for base temperatures of 15 and 18°C and the CDD for base temperatures of 22 and 24°C by compacting average hourly data. The results show that the HDD average value of the various locations examined in Thessaloniki during the examined period (2010-2013), as compared to the corresponding value for the city center, is increased from 19% up to 48% (depending on the base temperature). The difference in the average value of CDD for the specified time period is more pronounced, as differences range from -10% to -40% compared to the corresponding value for the city center.

Increasing population and scarcity of spaces in commercial districts, especially in the city center where crowding and number of cars require more parking spaces, and also the need for large areas un-interrupted by columns within the building, it was essential to find innovative structural design to fulfill these requirements. This was achieved by abandoning the continuity of some columns and replacing them with transfer beams that transfer their loads to the adjacent columns. In this paper the effect of wind loads on a building containing a floating column has been studied using ETABS program, three buildings of different heights were studied (G+5, G+10 and G+15). The wind loads were assumed to be resisted by the rigid frame system for one case of analysis and by the shear walls system at another case and compared models with others without a floating column to determine the percentage difference between them. Also the results were compared with the permissible limits in a number of parameters such as Drift, P-Delta, Soft Story and Torsional Irregularity. A number of results were obtained, the most important are that there are no major differences between (floating column) building and (normal) building, they behave almost the same. The use of the shear walls system reduces the difference in results, especially in the soft story item. Also, the difference between the results of the floating column building and the normal building were found to decrease as the number of stories increased.

The purpose of our work is to assess the health state of woody plants growing in different habitats of the city of Aktobe. We have studied the health state of arboreal and shrubby plants growing in various urban habitats; the survey was conducted during 2016-2017 by route-visual method. We performed the analysis of species diversity, abundance and density in urban area. The assessment of health state of the trees was made according to V.A. Alekseev. From your data and literature review we established that such species as Ulmus pinnato-ramosa, Acer negundo, Populus tremula, Populus nigra, and Syringa vulgaris have strong winter resistnce in the territory of Aktobe; we registered that only their apex buds and emds of the shoots were frozen in severe winters. The medium-resistant speices include Ulmus laevis and Acer platonoides. They are less plastic and suffer from late spring and early autumn frosts. The Amorpha fruticosa, Vitis vinifera, and Parthenocissus guinguefolia could be considered as the non-resistant species, since they usually freeze up to the snow cover line. The analysis of the vital state made it possible to assess the resistance to urban conditions of the majority of trees and shrubs registered in urban habitats of Aktobe. According to the preliminary data, the origin of the plant and its winter resistance are of main importance when introducing new species to urban area.

City centers worldwide are perceived as essential parts of the city, where city memories are preserved and its identity is expressed. They are planned to satisfy the functional requirements and pleasurable qualities of the city. Under the accelerating urbanization of the modern city, several challenges face these centers including demographic, economic, and environmental challenges. This requires a continuous and incremental urban development process based on clear strategy and action plans. Thus, this study focuses on urban development strategies of city centers, with a focus on Rafah city located in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian Territories. The geographic location of this city near the Palestinian-Egyptian borders makes it a promising commercial city at local and regional levels. Thus, the current situation of Rafah city center has been analyzed, and several development strategies have been proposed. This has been done through a field survey based on observation and a questionnaire directed to city center users. It has been found that there is a great potential of Rafah city center to be developed as a commercial center. In this regard, several strategies and required actions have been proposed in the fields of transportation, environmental quality, shopping activities, investment opportunities, and visual perception.
