In this work, a single-band metamaterial absorber (MA) based on a three dimensional (3D) resonant structure is presented. The unit cell is composed of a standing gear-shaped resonator, which is embedded in the dielectric substrate. The proposed 3D MA is ultrathin with a total thickness of 2.3 mm, corresponding 0.077λ0 at its center frequency. The simulation results demonstrate a high absorption peak at 10.1 GHz with absorptivity of 99.9%. The proposed 3D MA is insensitive to the polarization of the incident wave due to its rotationally symmetric structure. Moreover, the proposed 3D MA exhibits a wide-incident-angle stability, as absorptivity of more than 85% can be achieved for both TE and TM incidences with incident angle up to 60°. Most importantly, multiband electromagnetic wave absorption of the stereo MA can be enabled by adjusting the structural parameters of the standing gear. The proposed structure is compatible with 3D printing technology and has potential applications in electromagnetic shielding.

Different electrically-thin absorbing designs based on  High-Impedance Surfaces (HIS) are presented and classified on the basis of the nature of loss. HIS structures allow achieving absorption by exploiting either dielectric or ohmic (resistive) losses. The former ultra-narrowband absorption phenomenon can be obtained by employing dielectric losses of commercial substrates. The resonant structure, often referred to as Perfect Metamaterial Absorber, usually comprises a metallic frequency selective surfaces located above a ultra-thin grounded dielectric substrate. The metamaterial absorber is also angularly stable because of its reduced thickness. Alternatively, if a loss component is introduced in the frequency selective surface located in front of the grounded dielectric substrate both narrowband and wideband absorbing structures can be designed.

Abstract Ultrawide-angle electromagnetic wave absorbers with excellent mechanical properties are required in many diverse applications such as sensing, and stealth technologies. Here, a novel 3D reconfigurable metamaterial absorber (MMA) consisting of honeycomb and VO2 films is proposed. The proposed MMA exhibits a strong absorptivity above 90% in the widest incident angle up to $$87^\circ $$ 87 ∘ for TM- and TE polarized oblique incidences for THz wave propagating in yoz-plane. Under normal incidence, when VO2 films are in the insulating state, the proposed absorber exhibits high absorptivity in the frequency band of 1–4 THz. By increasing the temperature of the whole structure, the structural transformation of VO2 occurs and turns into the metallic phase. We have shown that under oblique incidence, the ohmic losses of VO2 films especially those parallel to the direction of the incident electric field are the most important absorption principles of the proposed MMA. Due to the ultra wide-angle absorption (angular stability) and mechanical performance, it is expected that the presented MMA may find potential applications, such as camouflage technologies, electromagnetic interference, imaging, and sensing. To the best knowledge of authors, the proposed MMA configuration exhibits the absorptivity in the widest incident angle ever reported.

In this paper, we report a switchable ultra-wideband metamaterial absorber with polarization-insensitivity and wide-incident angle at THz band which is composed of VO2 disk, polyimide dielectric substrate, and gold ground plane. The results show that the absorption is greater than 90% from 3.5–8 THz for a temperature of 300 K and this absorption band disappears when the temperature rises to 350 K. The absorption property of our proposed metamaterial absorber is insensitive to polarization states and angles and it can withhold high absorption of more than 80% for wide-incident angles, up to 60° for TE mode and TM mode. The wideband absorption mechanism is elucidated using an effective medium and surface current analysis.

Purpose A novel and simple six-band metamaterial absorber is proposed in the terahertz region, which is composed of an I-shaped absorber and circular ring with four gaps and a continuous metal ground plane separated by only 0.125 mm polyimide dielectric substrate. Initially, I-shaped resonator gives three bands at 0.4, 0.468 and 0.4928 THz with the absorptivity of 99.3%, 97.9% and 99.1%, respectively. The purpose of this paper is to improve the number of bands, for which the authors added the circular ring with four gaps, so the simulated metamaterial absorber exhibited six absorption peaks at 0.3392, 0.3528, 0.3968, 0.4676, 0.4768 and 0.492 THz, with the absorption rate of 91.4%, 94.2%, 94.9%, 90.3%, 77.5% and 97.4%, respectively. The surface current distribution and angle independence are explained for all the six frequencies which are used to analyze the absorption mechanism clearly. Structure maximum uses the squares and circles, so it will make the fabrication easy. The multiband absorbers obtained here have potential applications in many engineering technology, thermal radiation, material detection and imaging and optoelectronic areas. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents the design of the six-band metamaterial absorber which is from the I-shaped resonator and circular ring with four gaps and the metallic ground plane separated by the 0.125 polyimide dielectric substrate. The absorber exhibited six absorption peaks at 0.3392, 0.3528, 0.3968, 0.4676, 0.4768 and 0.492 THz, with the absorption rate of 91.4%, 94.2%, 94.9%, 90.3%, 77.5% and 97.4%, respectively. From the fabrication point of view, the proposed six-band metamaterial absorber has a very simple geometrical structure, and it is very easy to be fabricated. Findings The authors present a new and simple design of six-band absorber based on an I-shaped absorber and circular ring with four gaps and a metallic ground plane separated by a polyimide layer having the thickness of 0.125 mm. Six different resonance absorption peaks are found at 0.3392, 0.3528, 0.3968, 0.4676 , 0.4768 and 0.492 THz. Surface current distribution and angle independence plot have been studied to understand the absorption behavior of the designed terahertz metamaterial absorber. Originality/value The multiband absorbers obtained here have potential applications in many engineering technology, thermal radiation, material detection, security, sensors, imaging and optoelectronic areas.

We designed an ultra-thin dual-band metamaterial absorber by adjusting the side strips’ length of an H-shaped unit cell in the opposite direction to break the structural symmetry. The dual absorption peaks approximately 99.95% and 99.91% near the central resonance frequency of 4.72 THz and 5.0 THz were obtained, respectively. Meanwhile, a plasmon-induced transmission (PIT) like reflection window appears between the two absorption frequencies. In addition to theoretical explanations qualitatively, a multi-reflection interference theory is also investigated to prove the simulation results quantitatively. This work provides a way to obtain perfect dual-band absorption through an asymmetric metamaterial structure, and it may achieve potential applications in a variety of fields including filters, sensors, and some other functional metamaterial devices.

A multi-band perfect metamaterial absorber (MA) based on a cylindrical waveguide with polarization independency is numerically presented and investigated in detail. The proposed absorber has a very simple configuration, and it operates at flexible frequency ranges within the microwave frequency regime by simply tuning the dimensions of the structure. The maximum absorption values are obtained as 99.9%, 97.5%, 85.8%, 68.2% and 40.2% at the frequencies of 1.34 GHz, 2.15 GHz, 3.2 GHz, 4.31 GHz and 5.41 GHz, respectively. The numerical studies verify that the proposed model can provide multi-band perfect absorptions at wide polarization and incident angles due to its rotational symmetry feature. We have also realized sensor and parametric study applications in order to show additional features of the suggested model. The suggested MA enables myriad potential applications in medical technologies, sensors and in defense industry etc.
