Movement analytics and mobility insights play a crucial role in urban planning and transportation management. The plethora of mobility data sources, such as GPS trajectories, poses new challenges and opportunities for understanding and predicting movement patterns. In this study, we predict highway speed using a gated recurrent unit (GRU) neural network. Based on statistical models, previous approaches suffer from the inherited features of traffic data, such as nonlinear problems. The proposed method predicts highway speed based on the GRU method after training on digital tachograph data (DTG). The DTG data were recorded in one month, giving approximately 300 million records. These data included the velocity and locations of vehicles on the highway. Experimental results demonstrate that the GRU-based deep learning approach outperformed the state-of-the-art alternatives, the autoregressive integrated moving average model, and the long short-term neural network (LSTM) model, in terms of prediction accuracy. Further, the computational cost of the GRU model was lower than that of the LSTM. The proposed method can be applied to traffic prediction and intelligent transportation systems.

The rapid development of cities has brought new challenges and opportunities to traditional traffic management. The usage of smart cards promotes the upgrading of intelligent transportation systems, and also produces considerable big data. As an important part of the urban comprehensive transportation system, Nanjing metro has more than 1 million inbound and outbound records of traffic smart cards used by residents every day. How to process these traffic data and present them visually is an urgent problem in modern traffic management. In this study, five working days with normal weather conditions in Nanjing were selected, and the swiping records of the smart cards were extracted, and the space–time characteristics were analyzed. In terms of time analysis, this research analyzed the 24-h fluctuation of daily average passenger flow, peak hour coefficient of passenger flow, 24-h fluctuation of passenger flow on different metro lines, passenger flow intensity on different metro lines and passenger flow comparison at different stations. In spatial analysis, this study uses thermodynamic charts to represent the inflow and outflow of passengers at different stations during early and evening peak periods. The analysis results and visualized images directly reflect the area where Nanjing metro congestion is located, and also shows the commuting characteristics of residents. It can solve the problem of urban congestion, carry out the rational layout of urban functional areas, and promote the sustainable development of people and cities.

Traffic congestion prediction is critical for implementing intelligent transportation systems for improving the efficiency and capacity of transportation networks. However, despite its importance, traffic congestion prediction is severely less investigated compared to traffic flow prediction, which is partially due to the severe lack of large-scale high-quality traffic congestion data and advanced algorithms. This paper proposes an accessible and general workflow to acquire large-scale traffic congestion data and to create traffic congestion datasets based on image analysis. With this workflow we create a dataset named Seattle Area Traffic Congestion Status (SATCS) based on traffic congestion map snapshots from a publicly available online traffic service provider Washington State Department of Transportation. We then propose a deep autoencoder-based neural network model with symmetrical layers for the encoder and the decoder to learn temporal correlations of a transportation network and predicting traffic congestion. Our experimental results on the SATCS dataset show that the proposed DCPN model can efficiently and effectively learn temporal relationships of congestion levels of the transportation network for traffic congestion forecasting. Our method outperforms two other state-of-the-art neural network models in prediction performance, generalization capability, and computation efficiency.

The work presented a structural identification method based on recurrent neural network and auto-regressive and moving average model. The proposed approach involves two steps. The first step is to build a recurrent neural network to map the complex nonlinear relation between the excitations and responses of the structure-unknown system by on-line learning . The second step is to propose a procedure to determine the modal parameters of the structure from the trained neural networks. The dynamic characteristics of the structure are directly evaluated from the weighting matrices of the trained recurrent neural network. Furthermore, a illustrative example demonstrates the feasibility of using the proposed method to identify modal parameters of structure-unknown systems.

With the progress in intelligent transportation systems in smartcities, vision-based vehicle detection is becoming an important issuein the vision-based surveillance systems. With the advent ofthe big data era, deep learning methods have been increasinglyemployed in the detection, classification, and recognition applicationsdue to their performance accuracy, however, there are stillmajor concerns regarding deployment of such methods in embeddedapplications. This paper offers an efficient process leveragingthe idea of evolutionary deep intelligence on a state-of-the-art deepneural network. Using this approach, the deep neural network isevolved towards a highly sparse set of synaptic weights and clusters.Experimental results for the task of vehicle detection demonstratethat the evolved deep neural network can achieve a substantialimprovement in architecture efficiency adapting for GPUacceleratedapplications without significant sacrifices in detectionaccuracy. The architectural efficiency of ~4X-fold and ~2X-folddecrease is obtained in synaptic weights and clusters, respectively,while the accuracy of 92.8% (drop of less than 4% compared to theoriginal network model) is achieved. Detection results and networkefficiency for the vehicular application are promising, and opensthe door to a wider range of applications in deep learning.

Intelligent Transportation Systems are an important enabler for the smart cities paradigm. Currently, such systems generate massive amounts of granular data that can be analyzed to better understand people’s dynamics. To address the multivariate nature of spatiotemporal urban mobility data, researchers and practitioners have developed an extensive body of research and interactive visualization tools. Data visualization provides multiple perspectives on data and supports the analytical tasks of domain experts. This article surveys related studies to analyze which topics of urban mobility were addressed and their related phenomena, and to identify the adopted visualization techniques and sensors data types. We highlight research opportunities based on our findings.

Forecasting short-term traffic flow is a key task of intelligent transportation systems, which can influence the traveler behaviors and reduce traffic congestion, fuel consumption, and accident risks. This paper proposes a fuzzy wavelet neural network (FWNN) trained by improved biogeography-based optimization (BBO) algorithm for forecasting short-term traffic flow using past traffic data. The original BBO is enhanced by the ring topology and Powell’s method to advance the exploration capability and increase the convergence speed. Our presented approach combines the strengths of fuzzy logic, wavelet transform, neural network, and the heuristic algorithm to detect the trends and patterns of transportation data and thus has been successfully applied to transport forecasting. Other different forecasting methods, including ANN-based model, FWNN-based model, and WNN-based model, are also developed to validate the proposed approach. In order to make the comparisons across different methods, the performance evaluation is based on root-mean-squared error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and correlation coefficient (R). The performance indexes show that the FWNN model achieves lower RMSE and MAPE, as well as higherR, indicating that the FWNN model is a better predictor.

Skin cancer is a widely spreading cause of mortality among the people specifically living on or near the equatorial belt. Early detection of skin cancer significantly improves the recovery prevalence and the chance of surviving. Without the assist of computer-aided decision (CAD) system, skin cancer classification is the challenging task for the dermatologist to differentiate the type of skin cancer and provide the suitable treatment. Recently, the development of machine learning and pretrained deep neural network (DNN) shows the tremendous performance in image classification task which also provide the promising performance in medical field. However, these machine learning methods cannot get the deep features from network flow which resulting in low accuracy and the pretrained DNN has the complex network with a huge number of parameters causes the limited classification accuracy. This paper focuses on the classification of skin cancer to identify whether it is basal cell carcinoma, melanoma or squamous cell carcinoma by using the development of hybrid convolutional neural network algorithm and autoregressive integrated moving average model (CNN-ARIMA). The CNNARIMA model was trained and found to produce the best accuracy of 92.25%.
