In the present study, through Computational Fluid Dynamics techniques, the performance characterization of a new Stairmand-type separator cyclone was carried out using the commercial software ANSYS Fluent. Four models for the geometrical cyclone separator were built, namely model A as per the dimensions reported in the literature and models B, C, and D by applying square and circular shape cavities as a passive flow control technique on the surface of its cylindrical section. The Navier-Stokes equations with the RSM turbulence model were formulated to solve the continuous phase of the cyclone separator and, the Lagrangian approach was adopted to track the solid particles with one way-coupling. The proposed model’s separation efficiency and pressure drop were compared against those recorded in the previous studies reported in the literature. Model D was the cyclone separator that stood out as the most valuable by demonstrating a separation efficiency and pressure drop decrement of 0.42% and 6.01%, respectively.

In this work, we employed a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based model with a Eulerian multiphase approach to simulate the fluidization hydrodynamics in biomass gasification processes. Air was used as the gasifying/fluidizing agent and entered the gasifier at the bottom which subsequently fluidized the solid particles inside the reactor column. The momentum exchange related to the gas-phase was simulated by considering various viscous models (i.e., laminar and turbulence models of the re-normalisation group (RNG), k-ε and k-ω). The pressure drop gradient obtained by employing each viscous model was plotted for different superficial velocities and compared with the experimental data for validation. The turbulent model of RNG k-Ɛ was found to best represent the actual process. We also studied the effect of air distributor plates with different pore diameters (2, 3 and 5 mm) on the momentum of the fluidizing fluid. The plate with 3-mm pores showed larger turbulent viscosities above the surface. The effects of drag models (Syamlal–O’Brien, Gidaspow and energy minimum multi-scale method (EMMS) on the bed’s pressure drop as well as on the volume fractions of the solid particles were investigated. The Syamlal–O’Brien model was found to forecast bed pressure drops most consistently, with the pressure drops recorded throughout the experimental process. The formation of bubbles and their motion along the gasifier height in the presence of the turbulent flow was seen to follow a different pattern from with the laminar flow.

Over the decades conveying solid particles through pipelines is a prevalent usage for many industries like food industries, pharmaceutical, oil and gas-solid handling, power generations etc. In the present study, slurry flow through 54.9 mm diameter and 4 m long horizontal pipe with solid particle diameter 0.125 mm and specific gravity 2.47 has been numerically analysed using a granular version of Eulerian two-phase model and RNG K-  model. The solid particles are considered as mono-dispersed in the Eulerian model. These models are available in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) fluent software package. Non-uniform structured three-dimensional mesh with a refinement near wall boundary region has been selected for discretising the flow domain, and governing equations are solved using control volume finite difference method. Simulations are conducted at velocity varying from 1 m/s to 5 m/s and efflux concentration varying from 0.1 to 0.5 by volume. Different slurry flow parameters such as solid concentration distribution, velocity distribution, pressure drop etc. have been analysed from the simulated results. The simulated results of pressure drop are correlated with the experimental data available in previous literature and are found to be in excellent compliance with the experimental data.

The use of computational fluid dynamics-based techniques for predicting the gross solids and finely suspended solids separation performance of structures within urban drainage systems is becoming well established. This paper compares the result of simulated flow patterns and gross solids separation predictions with field measurements made in a full size storage chamber. The gross solids retention efficiency was measured for six different storage chambers in the field and simulations of these chambers were undertaken using the Fluent computational fluid dynamics software. Differences between the observed and simulated flow patterns are discussed. The simulated flow fields were used to estimate chamber efficiency using particle tracking. Efficiency results are presented as efficiency cusps, with efficiency plotted as a function of settling velocity. The cusp represents a range of efficiency values, and approaches to the estimation of an overall efficiency value from these cusps are briefly discussed. Estimates of total efficiency based on the observed settling velocity distribution differed from the measured values by an average of ±17%. However, estimates of steady flow efficiency were consistently higher than the observed values. The simulated efficiencies agreed with the field observations in identifying the most efficient configuration.

This study shows the performance of heat sinks (HS) with different designs under forced convection, varying geometric and boundary parameters, via computational fluid dynamics simulations. Initially, a complete and detailed analysis of the thermal performance of various conventional HS designs was taken. Afterwards, HS designs were modified following some additive manufacturing approaches. The HS performance was compared by measuring their temperatures and pressure drop after 15 s. Smaller diameters/thicknesses and larger fins/pins spacing provided better results. For fins HS, the use of radial fins, with an inverted trapezoidal shape and with larger holes was advantageous. Regarding pins HS, the best option contemplated circular pins in combination with frontal holes in their structure. Additionally, lattice HS, only possible to be produced by additive manufacturing, was also studied. Lower temperatures were obtained with a hexagon unit cell. Lastly, a comparison between the best HS in each category showed a lower thermal resistance for lattice HS. Despite the increase of at least 38% in pressure drop, a consequence of its frontal area, the temperature was 26% and 56% lower when compared to conventional pins and fins HS, respectively, and 9% and 28% lower when compared to the best pins and best fins of this study.

In this paper we propose a rational viscous Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodology applied to sailing yacht rig aerodynamic design and analysis. After an outlook of present challenges in high speed sailing, we emphasized the necessity of innovation and CFD to conceive, validate and optimize new aero-hydrodynamic concepts. Then, we present our CFD methodology through CAD, mesh generation, numerical and physical modelling choices, and their validation on typical rig configurations through wind-tunnel test comparisons. The methodology defined, we illustrate the relevance and wide potential of advanced numerical tools to investigate sailing yacht rig design questions like the relation between sail camber, propulsive force and aerodynamic finesse, and like the mast-mainsail non linear interaction. Through these examples, it is shown how sailing yacht rig improvements may be drawn by using viscous CFD based on Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS). Then the extensive use of viscous CFD, rather than wind-tunnel tests on scale models, for the evaluation or ranking of improved designs with increased time savings. Viscous CFD methodology is used on a preliminary study of the complex and largely unknown Yves Parlier Hydraplaneur double rig. We show how it is possible to increase our understanding of his flow physics with strong sail interactions, and we hope this methodology will open new roads toward optimized design. Throughout the paper, the necessary comparison between CFD and wind-tunnel test will be presented to focus on limitations and drawbacks of viscous CFD tools, and to address future improvements.

A computational methodology, which combines a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique and a computational structural dynamics (CSD) technique, is employed to design a deformable foil whose kinematics is inspired by the propulsive motion of the fin or the tail of a fish or a cetacean. The unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations are solved using a second-order accurate finite difference method and an immersed-boundary method to effectively impose boundary conditions on complex moving boundaries. A finite element-based structural dynamics solver is employed to compute the deformation of the foil due to interaction with fluid. The integrated CFD–CSD simulation capability is coupled with a surrogate management framework (SMF) for nongradient-based multivariable optimization in order to optimize flapping kinematics and flexibility of the foil. The flapping kinematics is manipulated for a rigid nondeforming foil through the pitching amplitude and the phase angle between heaving and pitching motions. The flexibility is additionally controlled for a flexible deforming foil through the selection of material with a range of Young's modulus. A parametric analysis with respect to pitching amplitude, phase angle, and Young's modulus on propulsion efficiency is presented at Reynolds number of 1100 for the NACA 0012 airfoil.

For a clear and comprehensive opinion on segregated SIMPLE algorithm in the area of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) during liquid processing of materials, the most significant developments on the SIMPLE algorithm and its variants are briefly reviewed. Subsequently, some important advances during last 30 years serving as increasing numerical accuracy, enhancing robustness and improving efficiency for Navier–Stokes (N-S) equations of incompressible fluid flow are summarized. And then a so-called Direct-SIMPLE scheme proposed by the authors of present paper introduced, which is different from SIMPLE-like schemes, no iterative computations are needed to achieve the final pressure and velocity corrections. Based on the facts cited in present paper, it conclude that the SIMPLE algorithm and its variants will continue to evolve aimed at convergence and accuracy of solution by improving and combining various methods with different grid techniques, and all the algorithms mentioned above will enjoy widespread use in the future.
