Bentonite slurry is widely used in underground and geotechnical engineering because of its strong ability of wall protection. Slurry penetration, which is of great significance for the soil stability, is difficult to observe directly during the soil and slurry interaction. Slurry penetration would change the electrical resistivity of soil, which provides an indirect method to monitor the degree of slurry penetration. This paper aimed to investigate the electrical resistivity characteristics of soil-bentonite mixtures. Several test groups with different material components were carried out. The effects of some factors including water environment, CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose) contents, soil particle gradation, and electrode distance on the electrical resistivity of slurry-soil mixtures were studied and the relationship between soil electrical resistivity and slurry concentration was established. The results in this paper can provide references for the application of the electrical method on slurry penetration.

The relationship between the diatom taxa preserved in surface lake sediments and environmental variables in Dongping Lake was explored using multivariate statistical methods. The statistical analysis showed that the lake was eutrophicated in all seasons. Transparency, chlorophyll a (Chla) and total phosphorus (TP) were the dominant environmental factors in spring and summer, and NH4+-N and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were the dominant environmental factors in autumn and winter. Sixteen genera and 43 species of diatom were found in the surface sediments, and the dominant diatom genera were Aulacoseira, Ulnaria, Cyclotella, Navicula and Fragilaria. A redundancy analysis (RDA) and Monte Carlo permutation 20 test revealed that COD, pH, TP, conductivity and transparency were significant factors influencing diatom assemblage change, meaning that the distribution of the diatom assemblages were mostly influenced by nutrient composition, light intensity and ion concentrations.

The relationship between the weight of glaze on power lines and common meteorological variables is examined. The icing data used are those collected by the Pennsylvania Electric Association; the meteorological data are those available in third-order climatological station records. A graphical correlation between ice weight, daily precipitation total and a derived temperature variable is obtained. In addition, the regression of ice weight on daily precipitation is explored and the probability of occurrence of daily maximum and minimum temperatures associated with glaze storms is given. These two relations are suggested as alternative estimating tools.

This paper presents the study of the relationship between electrical properties and physical characteristics of the soil. Measures of apparent electrical resistivity of the soil were made for different types of soil, varying moisture content gradually while maintaining a constant compaction, and then varying the compaction and relating it to a constant humidity. Development of a correlation surface is proposed in order to identify granulometry of the soil from moisture and compaction measurements. For the study of spatial variability, two areas were chosen to allow the change of moisture content and compaction in order to verify the measurement capacity of apparent electrical resistivity of the soil as methodology to identify change in soil dynamics. Results obtained show correlations among apparent electrical resistivity of the soil, moisture, soil compaction and clay content.

Abstract Every single investment affects the natural environment, and that is why it is so important to eliminate nuisance it could cause. Extremely harmful effect on environment or human health could be expected from waste treatment facilities. One of the kinds of contamination which is a real threat to soil and water environment are leachates from landfills. They contain random chemical composition and can migrate from landfill through soil water flux leading to environmental pollution and degradation of groundwater. This paper focuses on the use of geophysical methods to assess migration of pollutants from the landfill through the subsoil. The laboratory tests of solute transport have been conducted on three soil samples from Łubna site to simulate the contamination flow. Migration of leachates through soil samples was controlled using the column test and electrical resistivity measurements which allow to com pare the results obtained with the standard column test method and electrical resistivity measurements. It leads to the conclusion that electrical resistivity methods for contamination transport monitoring in soil–water systems are suitable. Furthermore, field electrical resistivity tomography have been used for monitoring of the vertical sealing system in Łubna landfill.
