In this paper, a novel adaptive robust control (ARC) scheme is proposed for electro-hydraulic servo systems (EHSSs) with uncertainties and disturbances. All dynamic functions in system dynamics are effectively approximated by multi-layer radial basis function neural network (RBF NN)-based approximators with online adaptive mechanisms. Moreover, neural network-based disturbance observers (NN-DOBs) are established to actively estimate and efficiently compensate for the effects of not only the matched/mismatched but also the imperfections of RBF NN-based approximators on the control system. Based on that, the nonlinear robust control law which integrates RBF NNs and NN-DOBs is synthesized via the sliding mode control (SMC) approach to guarantee the high-accuracy position tracking performance of the overall control system. Furthermore, the problem of the combination between DOBs and RBF NNs is first introduced in this paper to treat both disturbances and uncertainties in the EHSS. The stability of the recommended control mechanism is proven by using Lyapunov theory. Finally, numerical simulations with several distinct frequency levels of reference trajectory are conducted to convincingly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

This paper proposes an observer-based sliding mode control method for electro-hydraulic servo systems with uncertain nonlinearities, external disturbances, and immeasurable states. The mathematical model is built based on the principle of electro-hydraulic servo systems. Owing to its highly robustness and finite time properties, the sliding mode observer is chosen and designed to estimate the velocity and the equivalent pressure online only using the position feedback. Then, in order to tackle the chattering problem of conventional sliding mode control and increase the control accuracy, a novel second-order sliding mode control scheme is proposed based on the fractional-order proportional–integral–derivative sliding surface and the state observer. The stability of the overall system is proved by Lyapunov theory. Finally, the detailed simulations are conducted, which include the comparative analysis of control performance with other methods and the study of observation performance.

This paper focuses on high performance adaptive robust position control of electro-hydraulic servo system. The main feature of the paper is the combination of adaptive robust algorithm with discrete disturbance estimation to cope with the parametric uncertainties, uncertain nonlinearities, and external disturbance in the hydraulic servo system. First of all, a mathematical model of the single-rod position control system is developed and a nonlinear adaptive robust controller is proposed using the backstepping design technique. Adaptive robust control is used to encompass the parametric uncertainties and uncertain nonlinearities. Subsequently, a discrete disturbance estimator is employed to compensate for the effect of strong external disturbance. Furthermore, a special Lyapunov function is formulated to handle unknown nonlinear parameters in the system state equations. Simulations are carried out, and the results validate the superior performance and robustness of the proposed method.

SUMMARYThis paper presents a fractional-order sliding mode control scheme equipped with a disturbance observer for robust impedance control of a single-link flexible robot arm when it comes into contact with an unknown environment. In this research, the impedance control problem is studied for both unconstrained and constrained maneuvers. The proposed control strategy is robust with respect to the changes of the environment parameters (such as stiffness and damping coefficient), the unknown Coulomb friction disturbances, payload, and viscous friction variations. The proposed control scheme is also valid for both unconstrained and constrained motions. Our novel approach automatically switches from the free to the constrained motion mode using a simple algorithm of contact detection. In this regard, an impedance control scheme is proposed with the inner loop position control. This means that in the free motion, the applied force to the environment is zero and the reference trajectory for the inner loop position control is the desired trajectory. However, in the constrained motion the reference trajectory for the inner loop is determined by the desired impedance dynamics. Stability of the closed loop control system is proved by Lyapunov theory. Several numerical simulations are carried out to indicate the capability and the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

It is difficult to obtain a precise mathematical model of free-floating space robot for the uncertain factors, such as current measurement technology and external disturbance. Hence, a suitable solution would be an adaptive robust control method based on neural network is proposed for free-floating space robot. The dynamic model of free-floating space robot is established; a computed torque controller based on exact model is designed, and the controller can guarantee the stability of the system. However, in practice, the mathematical model of the system cannot be accurately obtained. Therefore, a neural network controller is proposed to approximate the unknown model in the system, so that the controller avoids dependence on mathematical models. The adaptive learning laws of weights are designed to realize online real-time adjustment. The adaptive robust controller is designed to suppress the external disturbance and compensate the approximation error and improve the robustness and control precision of the system. The stability of closed-loop system is proved based on Lyapunov theory. Simulations tests verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method and are of great significance to free-floating space robot.

Purpose The symmetrical valve is usually used in the hydraulic servo control system to control the asymmetrical cylinder, but this system’s structure involves asymmetry, and so its dynamic characteristics are asymmetrical, which causes issues in the control system of symmetric response. The purpose of this paper is to achieve the aim of symmetric control. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the authors proposed a method that combined wavelet neural network (WNN) and model reference adaptive control. The reference model determined the dynamic response that the system was expected to achieve, and the WNN adaptive control made the system follow the reference model to achieve the purpose of symmetric control. Findings The experimental results show that the method can achieve a more accurate symmetric control and position control compared with the solutions via the classical PID control. Originality/value The proposed combination of the WNN and the reference model can effectively compensate for the asymmetry of dynamic response of the asymmetric cylinder in forward and return directions, which can be extended to deal with other classes of applications.

Underwater vehicles (UVs) are subjected to various environmental disturbances due to ocean currents, propulsion systems, and un-modeled disturbances. In practice, it is very challenging to design a control system to maintain UVs stayed at the desired static position permanently under these conditions. Therefore, in this study, a nonlinear dynamics and robust positioning control of the over-actuated autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) under the effects of ocean current and model uncertainties are presented. First, a motion equation of the over-actuated AUV under the effects of ocean current disturbances is established, and a trajectory generation of the over-actuated AUV heading angle is constructed based on the line of sight (LOS) algorithm. Second, a dynamic positioning (DP) control system based on motion control and an allocation control is proposed. For this, motion control of the over-actuated AUV based on the dynamic sliding mode control (DSMC) theory is adopted to improve the system robustness under the effects of the ocean current and model uncertainties. In addition, the stability of the system is proved based on Lyapunov criteria. Then, using the generalized forces generated from the motion control module, two different methods for optimal allocation control module: the least square (LS) method and quadratic programming (QP) method are developed to distribute a proper thrust to each thruster of the over-actuated AUV. Simulation studies are conducted to examine the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed DP controller. The results show that the proposed DP controller using the QP algorithm provides higher stability with smaller steady-state error and stronger robustness.

This article proposes a computationally efficient adaptive robust control scheme for a quad-rotor with cable-suspended payloads. Motion of payload introduces unknown disturbances that affect the performance of the quad-rotor controlled with conventional schemes, thus novel adaptive robust controllers with both integer- and fractional-order dynamics are proposed for the trajectory tracking of quad-rotor with cable-suspended payload. The disturbances acting on quad-rotor due to the payload motion are estimated by utilizing adaptive laws derived from integer- and fractional-order Lyapunov functions. The stability of the proposed control systems is guaranteed using integer- and fractional-order Lyapunov theorems. Overall, three variants of the control schemes, namely adaptive fractional-order sliding mode (AFSMC), adaptive sliding mode (ASMC), and classical Sliding mode controllers (SMC)s) are tested using processor in the loop experiments, and based on the two performance indicators, namely robustness and computational resource utilization, the best control scheme is evaluated. From the results presented, it is verified that ASMC scheme exhibits comparable robustness as of SMC and AFSMC, while it utilizes less sources as compared to AFSMC.
