CFD simulations of near-ground gas dispersion depend significantly on the accuracy of the wind field. When simulating wind fields with conventional RANS turbulence models, the velocity and turbulence profiles specified as inlet boundary conditions change rapidly in the approach flow region. As a result, when hazardous materials are released, the extent of hazardous areas is calculated based on an approach flow that differs significantly from the boundary conditions defined. To solve this problem, a turbulence model with consistent boundary conditions was developed to ensure a horizontally homogeneous approach flow. Instead of the logarithmic vertical velocity profile, a power law is used to overcome the problem that with the logarithmic profile, negative velocities would be calculated for heights within the roughness length. With this, the problem that the distance of the wall-adjacent cell midpoint has to be higher than the roughness length is solved, so that a high grid resolution can be ensured even in the near-ground region which is required to simulate gas dispersion. The evaluation of the developed CFD model using the German guideline VDI 3783/9 and wind tunnel experiments with realistic obstacle configurations showed a good agreement between the calculated and the measured values and the ability to achieve a horizontally homogenous approach flow.

The first part of this work presents a comparison of predictions obtained with several two-equation type RANS turbulence models commonly used in industry against experimental data obtained by Whitelaw et al [1]. All examined models yield a relatively poor match in the flow region very close to the wall; agreement with the measurements improves significantly when moving further away from the wall. This concerns both the internal normal stress profiles and the average velocity profiles, the latter show improved prediction of the recirculation zone area when moving further into the main stream. Downstream behaviour for both models shows an excellent match more than 6 diameters away from the jet inlet, defined as the region after which the flow essentially resumes its normal duct behaviour[1]. Expanding upon these RANS results, another series of simulations using LES modelling with the standard Smagorinsky SGS model was conducted using the same grid and compared to the RANS-based results. Although performance in the most complex flow areas was slightly improved over RANS, this was at the cost of an increase of computation time by almost a factor of 6. The next stage involved developing a code based on the model for two-phase flow described in [2] to predict the atomisation pattern for a non-vaporising (or “cold”) flow based on the parameters of the previous simulations. This model implements transport equations for the liquid mass fraction and the average surface area per unit mass along with an equation for average density; resulting in an entirely Eulerian model which can be used to predict atomisation from first principles. Current work consists in development of additional source terms describing vaporisation in a strongly turbulent environment and further coupling with a combustion model applicable to the combustion chamber of an industrial gas turbine.

Abstract The robustness and accuracy of Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) models was investigated for complex turbulent flow in an open channel receiving lateral inflow, also known as spatially varied flow with increasing discharge (SVF). The three RANS turbulence models tested include realizable k–ε, shear stress transport k–ω and Reynolds stress model based on their prominence to model jets in crossflows. Results were compared to experimental laser Doppler velocimetry measurements from a previous study. RANS results in the uniform flow region and farther from the jet centreline were more accurate than within the lateral inflow region. On the leeward side of the jet, RANS models failed to capture the downward velocity vectors resulting in major deviations in vertical velocity. Among RANS models minor variations were noted at impingement and near the water surface. Regardless of inadequately predicting complex characteristics of SVF, RANS models matched experimental water surface profiles and proved more superior to the theoretical approach currently used for design purposes.

Computational Fluid Dynamics is a fundamental tool to simulate the flow field and the multi-physics nature of the phenomena involved in gas turbine combustors, supporting their design since the very preliminary phases. Standard steady state RANS turbulence models provide a reasonable prediction, despite some well-known limitations in reproducing the turbulent mixing in highly unsteady flows. Their affordable cost is ideal in the preliminary design steps, whereas, in the detailed phase of the design process, turbulence scale-resolving methods (such as LES or similar approaches) can be preferred to significantly improve the accuracy. Despite that, in dealing with multi-physics and multi-scale problems, as for Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) in presence of radiation, transient approaches are not always affordable and appropriate numerical treatments are necessary to properly account for the huge range of characteristics scales in space and time that occur when turbulence is resolved and heat conduction is simulated contextually. The present work describes an innovative methodology to perform CHT simulations accounting for multi-physics and multi-scale problems. Such methodology, named U-THERM3D, is applied for the metal temperature prediction of an annular aeroengine lean burn combustor. The theoretical formulations of the tool are described, together with its numerical implementation in the commercial CFD code ANSYS Fluent. The proposed approach is based on a time de-synchronization of the involved time dependent physics permitting to significantly speed up the calculation with respect to fully coupled strategy, preserving at the same time the effect of unsteady heat transfer on the final time averaged predicted metal temperature. The results of some preliminary assessment tests of its consistency and accuracy are reported before showing its exploitation on the real combustor. The results are compared against steady-state calculations and experimental data obtained by full annular tests at real scale conditions. The work confirms the importance of high-fidelity CFD approaches for the aerothermal prediction of liner metal temperature.

This study evaluates the capability of Navier–Stokes solvers in predicting forward and backward plunging breaking, including assessment of the effect of grid resolution, turbulence model, and VoF, CLSVoF interface models on predictions. For this purpose, 2D simulations are performed for four test cases: dam break, solitary wave run up on a slope, flow over a submerged bump, and solitary wave over a submerged rectangular obstacle. Plunging wave breaking involves high wave crest, plunger formation, and splash up, followed by second plunger, and chaotic water motions. Coarser grids reasonably predict the wave breaking features, but finer grids are required for accurate prediction of the splash up events. However, instabilities are triggered at the air–water interface (primarily for the air flow) on very fine grids, which induces surface peel-off or kinks and roll-up of the plunger tips. Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) turbulence models result in high eddy-viscosity in the air–water region which decays the fluid momentum and adversely affects the predictions. Both VoF and CLSVoF methods predict the large-scale plunging breaking characteristics well; however, they vary in the prediction of the finer details. The CLSVoF solver predicts the splash-up event and secondary plunger better than the VoF solver; however, the latter predicts the plunger shape better than the former for the solitary wave run-up on a slope case.

A complex wind field refers to the typical atmospheric disturbance phenomena existing in nature that have a great influence on the flight of aircrafts. Aimed at the issues involving large volume of data, complex computations and a single model in the current wind field simulation approaches for flight environments, based on the essential principles of fluid mechanics, in this paper, wind field models for two kinds of wind shear such as micro-downburst and low-level jet plus three-dimensional atmospheric turbulence are established. The validity of the models is verified by comparing the simulation results from existing wind field models and the measured data. Based on the principle of vector superposition, three wind field models are combined in the ground coordinate system, and a comprehensive model of complex wind fields is established with spatial location as the input and wind velocity as the output. The model is applied to the simulated flight of a rocket projectile, and the change in the rocket projectile’s flight attitude and flight trajectory under different wind fields is analyzed. The results indicate that the comprehensive model established herein can reasonably and efficiently reflect the influence of various complex wind field environments on the flight process of aircrafts, and that the model is simple, extensible, and convenient to use.

In the field of civil engineering, the meteorological data available usually do not have the detailed information of the wind near a certain site. However, the detailed information of the wind field during typhoon is important for the wind-resistant design of civil structures. Furthermore, the resolution of the meteorological data available by the civil engineers is too coarse to be applicable. Therefore it is meaningful to obtain the detailed information of the wind fields based on the meteorological data provided by the meteorological department. Therefore, in the present study, a one-way coupling method between WRF and CFD is adopted and a method to keep the mass conservation during the simulation in CFD is proposed. It is found that using the proposed one-way coupling method, the predicted wind speed is closer to the measurement. And the curvature of the wind streamline during typhoon is successfully reproduced.
