The synergistic inhibitory effect of stearic acid and (+)-α-tocopherol (E307) as a green inhibitor within a highly hydrophobic layer on the corrosion of low-carbon ferritic stainless steels was investigated in 3.0 wt% NaCl solution at 25 °C, focusing on long-term immersion tests. For a broader characterisation of the surface properties, especially the modified surfaces, of the samples used, the following methods were chosen: SEM was used to investigate the surface morphologies, the water contact angle to examine the wettability, while the corrosion resistance was investigated by potentiodynamic measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The inhibition efficiency for modified ferritic stainless steel surfaces reached more than 99% after 1 h of immersion and remained the same after 5 days immersion testing when the surfaces were modified with (SA + 2.0 wt% E307) and more than 97% with (SA + 0.5 wt% E307) under the same test conditions.

Eco-friendly biodegradable Rhododendron schlippenbachii (R. schlippenbachii) green inhibitors, R. schlippenbachii methanolic (RSMeOH) extract, which can effectively reduce low carbon steel corrosion rate, were investigated using weight-loss and electrochemical (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) techniques. The inhibitors exhibited higher efficiency by retarding the corrosion process in 1[Formula: see text]M H2SO4 and the inhibition efficiency is found to be concentration dependent. The reactivity of the predominant phytochemical components of the extract are analyzed. The adsorption of inhibitors on low carbon steel is followed the Langmuir adsorption. The protective inhibitor film formed on the metal surface was confirmed by SEM and AFM techniques.

The corrosion weight loss method and polarization curve measurement were conducted to study the effects of the complex inhibitor of sodium tungstate and urotropine on the corrosion of 304 stainless steel in the 3.5% NaCl solution. The results indicated that the complex inhibitor has good synergistic inhibitory effect for stainless steel in the NaCl solution. Combining sodium tungstate and urotrpine at a total concentration of 500 mg/L, when the mass ratio of sodium tungstate to urotrpine was 7:3, the inhibitory effect was optimum. In addition, the probable inhibitory mechanism was analyzed.

Abstract Outokumpu Moda 410L/4003 is a weldable, extra low carbon, Cr-Ni, ferritic stainless steel that is best suited for mildly corrosive environments such as indoors, where the material is either not exposed to contact with water or gets regularly wiped dry, or outdoors, where some discoloration and superficial rusting are acceptable. It is a low-cost alternative to low-carbon non-alloy steels in certain applications. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties. It also includes information on corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, machining, and joining. Filing Code: SS-1330. Producer or source: Outokumpu Oyj.

In this study, a waste of biorefinery—lignin—is investigated as an anticorrosion coating on stainless steel. Corrosion behavior of two lignin types (hardwood beech and softwood spruce) was studied by electrochemical measurements (linear sweep voltammetry, open circuit potential, potentiostatic polarization, cyclic potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance measurements) during exposure to simulated body fluid (SBF) or phosphate buffer (PBS). Results from linear sweep voltammetry of lignin-coated samples, in particular, demonstrated a reduction in corrosion current density between 1 and 3 orders of magnitude cf. blank stainless steel. Furthermore, results from cross cut adhesion tests on lignin-coated samples demonstrated that the best possible adhesion (grade 0) of ISO 2409 standard was achieved for the investigated novel coatings. Such findings suggest that lignin materials could transform the field of organic coatings towards more sustainable alternatives by replacing non-renewable polymer coatings.

AbstractPhenylcoumarin glucoside (4-PC) is a compound extracted from the plant Hintona latiflora and was studied as inhibitor for AISI 1018 steel corrosion in 3% NaCl solution using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques, which may find application as eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors. The 4-PC provides inhibitor properties that protect AISI 1018 low carbon steel against corrosion at low concentrations (5 ppm) obtained by EIS. Polarization studies showed that the inhibitor was of mixed type. The inhibition efficiency by the two electrochemical techniques shows similar results. The inhibitor adsorption was demonstrated to be a combined process (physisorption and chemisorption) according to the Langmuir isotherm.

The colored films were successfully prepared on the 304 stainless steel surfaces in coloring solutions with different NiSO4 contents. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of NiSO4 in the coloring solution on the coloring performance of 304 stainless steel and corrosion resistance of the obtained colored film in NaCl solution. The coloring rate was determined from coloring potential-time curve, and the protection properties of the color films in a 3.5% NaCl solution were characterized by potentiodynamic polarization scan, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and wear resistance test. The results showed that adding NiSO4 could accelerate the coloring process but brought about a negative impact on the surface’s corrosion resistance.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the electrophoretic deposited nanosilica on stainless steel for corrosion protection. The electrophoretic deposition (EPD) was carried out by pulsed direct current (PDC) of silica sol made of sodium silicate. The amplitude and frequency of the PDC were varied in the range of 0.1-0.6 V and 30-80 Hz, respectively. The corrosion protection properties of the silica films were analyzed by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) in 2 wt% NaCl solution. The experimental results showed that the silica films exhibit good characteristics as indicated by their high pore resistance and low admittance. The silica film corrosion protection characteristics were influenced by the frequency and amplitude of PDC during preparation of electrophoretic deposition.

A novel hydrophobic film was prepared by Stearic acid (SA) chemically adsorbed onto the cupronickel B30 surface. The film properties were characterized by means of water contact angle measurement and electrochemical techniques. The results indicate that the structure of the adsorbed film is hydrophobic, and the contact angle is 113.82° for water. AC impedance and polarization curve measurements show that the corrosion resistance of cupronickel B30 modified by stearic acid is improved remarkably, and the inhibition efficiency reached 66.85%. After hydrophobic modified by stearic acid, the inhibition efficiency could reach 88.85% in 3% NaCl solution with the concentration of 0.1 g/L Na2WO4.
