The variation in the viscous damping coefficient with the carbon fiber angle can be evaluated using the partial derivatives of the viscous damping coefficient with respect to the resonance frequency and modal damping ratio. However, the direct derivatives of the viscous damping coefficient were not effective solutions to the sensitivity analysis of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) structures because the viscous damping from the binding matrix was not changed over the carbon fiber angle. If the identified viscous damping coefficients were assumed to be equivalent values from the parallel relationship between the binding matrix and carbon fiber, the relative error of the viscous damping coefficient of carbon fiber between the increased carbon fiber angle and reference angle could be used as the sensitivity index for the viscous damping coefficient of carbon fiber only. The modal parameters, resonance frequency, and modal damping ratio were identified from the experimental modal test of rectangular CFRP specimens for five different carbon fiber angles between 0° and 90°. The sensitivity of the viscous damping coefficient of carbon fiber was determined for two sensitivity indices: the direct derivative of the mass-normalized equivalent viscous damping coefficient and the relative error of the viscous damping coefficient of carbon fiber. The sensitivity results were discussed using the five mode shapes of the CFRP specimen, that is, three bending modes and two twisting modes.

Excellent mechanical properties of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic material (CFRP) demonstrates many possibilities in industries using lightweight materials, but unlike isotropic materials, such as iron, aluminum, and magnesium, they show direction-sensitive properties, which makes it difficult to apply for them. The sensitivity of a modal damping coefficient of a CFRP material over the direction of carbon fiber was examined on spectral input patterns in recent research, but the effect of temperature was not considered up to now. To overcome this, uniaxial vibration tests were conducted using five simple specimens with different direction of carbon fiber in a CFRP specimen, the frequency response functions were experimentally determined and the modal damping coefficients were calculated. It was revealed that the resonance point and the modal damping of the specimen changed according to the change in temperature condition. Based on the experimental results, it was demonstrated that the theoretical frequency response function of the carbon composite material is a function of temperature, and it was confirmed that the nonlinear characteristic of the modal damping was the smallest under the 0 degree of direction of carbon fiber.

The dynamics of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) change according to the carbon fiber angle, and a mode order shift may occur in CFRP specimens. The variation trends in modal parameters differ in each mode; thus, an efficient mode-tracking method is needed to identify the reliable dynamic behavior of the CFRP structure. The mode-tracking method was assumed to be applicable for the same configuration of the tested specimen except for the differences in carbon fiber angle of the CFRP specimen. Simple rectangular specimens were prepared for one isotropic material, SS275, and five anisotropic CFRP specimens with five carbon fiber angles ranging from 0° to 90°. An experimental impact test was conducted to obtain all the modal parameters. The proposed mode-tracking method was applied using three indicators: the modal assurance criterion (MAC) and two modal parameters (resonance frequency and modal damping ratio). The MAC value was valid for the three bending modes at 0°, 30°, and 90°, but not for the two torsional modes. However, the variation in the resonance frequencies was a more efficient indicator with which to track all the modes of interest, except for the second torsional mode. The variation in the modal damping ratio was also a valid indicator for the two torsional modes. Therefore, the proposed three indicators were all required to derive reliable mode tracking for the CFRP specimens considering the mode order shift.

In the present paper, the asymptotic solution of modal damping ratio of stay cable-passive damper system with the influence of cable bending stiffness and damper stiffness was derived. Maximum modal damping ratio and corresponding optimal damping coefficient, which indicated the relationships of the characteristics of the damper and the cable bending stiffness was theoretically analyzed to obtain their close solutions. On the basis of these close solutions, numerical analysis of modal damping of stay cable-passive damper system with the effects of cable bending stiffness and damper stiffness was conducted. The numerical and analytical results show that the maximum modal damping ratio decrease and the corresponding damping coefficient increase, when considering the influence of the damper stiffness and the cable bending stiffness.

In this paper, we propose a model updating method for systems with nonviscous proportional damping. In comparison to the traditional viscous damping model, the introduction of nonviscous damping will not only reduce the vibration of the system but also change the resonance frequencies. Therefore, most of the existing updating methods cannot be directly applied to systems with nonviscous damping. In many works, for simplicity, the Rayleigh damping model has been applied in the model updating procedure. However, the assumption of Rayleigh damping may result in large errors of damping for higher modes. To capture the variation of modal damping ratio with frequency in a more general way, the diagonal elements of the modal damping matrix and relaxation parameter are updated to characterize the damping energy dissipation of the structure by the proposed method. Spatial and modal incompleteness are both discussed for the updating procedure. Numerical simulations and experimental examples are adopted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that the systems with general proportional damping can be predicted more accurately by the proposed updating method.

This study describes inelastic seismic design of piping systems considering the effect of plastic deformation of a pipe support structure. The damping coefficient of a piping system is focused on, and the relation between seismic response of the piping system and elastic-plastic behavior of the support structure was studied using nonlinear time history analysis and complex eigenvalue analysis. The analysis results showed that the maximum seismic response acceleration of the piping system decreased largely in the area surrounded by pipe elbows including the support structure which allowed plastic deformation. Furthermore, modal damping coefficient increased a maximum of about seven-fold. The increase ratio of the modal damping coefficient was proportional to the size of the effective mass ratio, when a relatively large increase was seen in the increase ratio of the modal damping coefficient. On the other hand, the amount of the initial stiffness of the support structure made a difference in the increasing tendency of the modal damping ratio. In the case of relatively small initial stiffness, the modal damping ratio of only one vibration mode increased. The increment of the modal damping ratio was proportional to the effective mass ratio in the case of large initial stiffness. In the viewpoint of the inelastic seismic design, the seismic response of the piping system was little affected by the plastic deformation of the support structure with 10% variation of the secondary stiffness to the initial stiffness. The result suggested that the seismic response of the piping system with the support structure can be estimated by using only the support model which has the elastic perfectly plastic property even if there are various shapes of steel type of support structures.

This paper investigates the working performance of reinforcement concrete (RC) beams strengthened by Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) with different anchoring under bending moment, based on the structural stressing state theory. The measured strain values of concrete and Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) sheet are modeled as generalized strain energy density (GSED), to characterize the RC beams’ stressing state. Then the Mann–Kendall (M–K) criterion is applied to distinguish the characteristic loads of structural stressing state from the curve, updating the definition of structural failure load. In addition, for tested specimens with middle anchorage and end anchorage, the torsion applied on the anchoring device and the deformation width of anchoring device are respectively set parameters to analyze their effects on the reinforcement performance of CFRP sheet through comparing the strain distribution pattern of CFRP. Finally, in order to further explore the strain distribution of the cross-section and analyze the stressing-state characteristics of the RC beam, the numerical shape function (NSF) method is proposed to reasonably expand the limited strain data. The research results provide a new angle of view to conduct structural analysis and a reference to the improvement of reinforcement effect of CFRP.

Previous studies have demonstrated the sensitivity of the dynamic behavior of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) material over the carbon fiber direction by performing uniaxial excitation tests on a simple specimen. However, the variations in modal parameters (damping coefficient and resonance frequency) over the direction of carbon fiber have been partially explained in previous studies because all modal parameters have only been calculated using the representative summed frequency response function without modal analysis. In this study, the dynamic behavior of CFRP specimens was identified from experimental modal analysis and compared five CFRP specimens (carbon fiber direction: 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90°) and an isotropic SCS13A specimen using the modal assurance criterion. The first four modes were derived from the SCS13A specimen; they were used as reference modes after verifying with the analysis results from a finite element model. Most of the four mode shapes were found in all CFRP specimens, and the similarity increased when the carbon fiber direction was more than 45°. The anisotropic nature was dominant in three cases of carbon fiber, from 0° to 45°, and the most sensitive case was found in Specimen #3.
