Recent trends in computer architecture have increased the role of dedicated hardware logic as an effective approach to computation. Virtualization of logic computations (i.e., by sharing a fixed function) provides a means to effectively utilize hardware resources by context switching the logic to support multiple data streams of computation. Multiple applications or users can take advantage of this by using the virtualized computation in an accelerator as a computational service, such as in a software as a service (SaaS) model over a network. In this paper, we analyze the performance of virtualized hardware logic and develop M/G/1 queueing model equations and simulation models to predict system performance. We predict system performance using the queueing model and tune a schedule for optimal performance. We observe that high variance and high load give high mean latency. The simulation models validate the queueing model, predict queue occupancy, show that a Poisson input process distribution (assumed in the queueing model) is reasonable for low load, and expand the set of scheduling algorithms considered.

The problem of predicting performance of complex human machine systems is a very difficult one. The use of task-oriented simulation models makes this problem more tractable, but by no means converts it to a trivial exercise. The difficulty of determining an appropriate abstract model from analysis of the actual human machine system remains. An approach is suggested for developing a systematic method of analyzing human machine systems and for formulating a task-oriented model from the analysis results. The role of task taxonomies in systematic analysis is discussed.

Abstract This review is focused on the utilization of insects as a new opportunity in food and feed products, including their commercialization both in traditional and new markets. It has been suggested that insects are considerably more sustainable when compared with other sources of animal protein, thus alleviating the pressure over the environment and the planet facing the necessity to feed the world population, constantly increasing. Many chefs have adhered to the trend of using insects in their culinary preparations, bringing insects to the plan of top gastronomy, highlighting their organoleptic qualities allied to a recognized high nutritional value. However, in some markets, insects or insect-based products are not readily accepted because of neophobia and disgust. Moreover, the insect markets, farming, and commercialization are experiencing a huge growth, in which the domain of animal feed is undoubtedly a very strong component. The future of insects as human food and animal feed seems promising in view of the recent trends and challenges.

This article offers insight into the role of the state in land financialisation through a reading of urban hegemony. This offers the basis for a conjunctural analysis of the politics of planning within a context in which authoritarian neoliberalism is ascendant across Europe. I explore this through the case of Antwerp as it underwent a hegemonic shift in which the nationalist neoliberal party the New Flemish Alliance (Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie; N-VA) ended 70 years of Socialist Party rule and deregulated the city’s technocratic planning system. However, this unbridling of the free market has led to the creation of high-margin investment products rather than suitable housing for the middle classes, raising concerns about the city’s gentrification strategy. The consequent, politicisation of the city’s planning system led to controversy over clientelism which threatened to undermine the N-VA’s wider hegemonic project. In response, the city has sought to roll out a more formalised system of negotiated developer obligations, so embedding transactional, market-oriented informal governance networks at the centre of the planning system. This article highlights how the literature on land financialisation may incorporate conjunctural analysis, in the process situating recent trends towards the use of land value capture mechanisms within the contradictions and statecraft of contemporary neoliberal urbanism.

Based on Boltzmann transport equation, the drift-diffusion, hydrodynamic, and Monte-Carlo physical simulators are accurately developed. For each simulator, the model equations are self-consistently solved with Poisson equation, and with Schrödinger equation when quantization effects take place, in one and two-dimensions to characterize the operation and optimize the structure of mm-wave devices. The effects of the device dimensions, biasing conditions, and operating frequencies on the accuracy of results obtained from the simulators are thoroughly investigated. Based on physical understanding of the models, the simulation results are analyzed to fully determine the limits at which a certain device simulator can be accurately and efficiently used to characterize the noise behavior of mm-wave devices.

This chapter begins with a brief introductory note on the role of legal history in ancient Roman law, and the legal scholarship of medieval glossators and commentators. It then turns to the dominant schools of continental legal scholarship in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the ‘Neo-Bartolists’ and the usus modernus pandectarum. It considers the rise of the Historical School in Germany and the corresponding movements elsewhere in continental Europe. Methodologically, the representatives of the Historical School were the first professional legal historians in the modern sense of the term. Finally, the chapter retells the story of the rise of European legal history in the post-war period, and the recent trends towards a creation of global legal histories. It shows that legal history’s turns have in many ways followed from not only legal scholarship in general, but also from developments in historical science and global politics.

This article is concerned with unpacking some of the important dimensions of the developing relationship in Britain between satellite television and sport. The article discusses (a) the rise of Rupert Murdoch’s BSkyB network and the central role of Sky’s exclusive deal with the new Football Association Premier League for soccer in cementing the future for satellite broadcasting in Europe, and (h) the role of sport and television in constructing national identities and in promoting some of the conditions for the enactment of effective forms of citizenship. The discussion concludes with some comments on recent trends in the commercialization of sport and on the possibilities for the mediation of new forms of spectator attachments to sport.

The role of immune system in our body is to defense against the foreign bodies. However, if the immune system fails to recognize self and non-self-cells in our body leads to autoimmune diseases. Widespread autoimmune diseases are rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and more yet to be added to the list. This chapter discusses about how stem cell-based therapies and advancement of regenerative medicine endow with novel treatment for autoimmune diseases. Furthermore, in detail, specific types of stem cells and their therapeutic approach for each autoimmune condition along with their efficiency to obtain desired results are discussed. Ultimately, this chapter describes the recent trends in treating autoimmune diseases effectively using advanced stem cell research.
