A new kind of hydraulic transformer, called variable hydraulic transformer (VHT), has been proposed to control its load flow rate. The displacement characteristics of VHT are investigated in detail. The mathematic models are concluded and optimized. Matlab is used to simulate and calculate, finding that there are 5 controlled angles of the port plate that can help define displacement characteristics of VHT. The relationships between the displacement characteristics and the structure in VHT are shown. The results demonstrate the performance laws of VHT when the controlled angles of the port plate and of the swash plate change.

In the February 1966 issue of this journal, two errors occurred in Joan C. Pitzner’s and Hughlett L. The results of five centrifuge models were used to evaluate the response of pile-supported wharves subjected to inertial and liquefaction-induced lateral spreading loads. The centrifuge models contained pile groups that were embedded in rockfill dikes over layers of loose to dense sand and were shaken by a series of ground motions. The p-y curves were back-calculated for both dynamic and static loading from centrifuge data and were compared against commonly used American Petroleum Institute p-y relationships. It was found that liquefaction in loose sand resulted in a significant reduction in ultimate soil resistance. It was also found that incorporating p-multipliers that are proportional to the pore water pressure ratio in granular materials is adequate for estimating pile demands in pseudo-static analysis. The unique contribution of this study is that the piles in these tests were subjected to combined effects of inertial loads from the superstructure and kinematic loads from liquefaction-induced lateral spreading.

A hydrogen energy system will require the production of hydrogen from coal-based gasification plants and its transmission through long distance pipelines at 70 � 100 bar. To overcome some problems of current gasifiers, which are limited in pressure capability, two options are explored, in-plant compression of the syngas and compression of the hydrogen at the plant exit. It is shown that whereas in-plant compression using centrifugal machines is practical, this is not a solution when compressing hydrogen at the plant exit. This is because of the low molecular weight of the hydrogen. It is also shown that if centrifugal compressors are to be used in a pipeline system, pressure drops will need to be restricted as even an advanced two-stage centrifugal compressor will be limited to a pressure ratio of 1.2. High strength steels are suitable for the in-plant compressor, but aluminium alloy will be required for a hydrogen pipeline compressor.

A novel closed-cycle gas turbine power system is now under development by the GWF Power Systems Company for cogeneration applications. Nominally the system produces 5 megawatts (MW) of electric power and 80,000 lb/hr (36,287 kg/hr) of 1000 psig (6895 kPa) steam. The heat source is an atmospheric fluidized bed combustor (AFBC) capable of using low-cost solid fuels while meeting applicable emission standards. A simple, low-pressure ratio, single spool, turbomachine is utilized. This paper describes the system and related performance, as well as the development and test efforts now being conducted. The initial commercial application of the system will be for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) of the heavy crudes produced in California.

Background: Repair of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) with major aortopulmonary collateral arteries (MAPCAs) requires unifocalization of pulmonary circulation, intracardiac repair with the closure of the ventricular septal defect, and placement of a right ventricle (RV) to pulmonary artery (PA) conduit. The decision to perform complete repair is sometimes aided by an intraoperative flow study to estimate the total resistance of the reconstructed pulmonary circulation. Methods: We reviewed patients who underwent unifocalization and PA reconstruction for TOF/MAPCAs to evaluate acute and mid-term outcomes after repair with and without flow studies and to characterize the relationship between PA pressure during the flow study and postrepair RV pressure. Results: Among 579 patients who underwent unifocalization and PA reconstruction for TOF/MAPCAs, 99 (17%) had an intraoperative flow study during one (n = 91) or more (n = 8) operations to determine the suitability for a complete repair. There was a reasonably good correlation between mean PA pressure at 3 L/min/m2 during the flow study and postrepair RV pressure and RV:aortic pressure ratio. Acute and mid-term outcomes (median: 3.8 years) after complete repair in the flow study patients (n = 78) did not differ significantly from those in whom the flow study was not performed (n = 444). Furthermore, prior failed flow study was not associated with differences in outcome after subsequent intracardiac repair. Conclusions: The intraoperative flow study remains a useful adjunct for determining the suitability for complete repair in a subset of patients undergoing surgery for TOF/MAPCAs, as it is reasonably accurate for estimating postoperative PA pressure and serves as a reliable guide for the feasibility of single-stage complete repair.
