This study provides an experimental evaluation of the effectiveness of Miller cycles with various combinations of lift and intake valve closing angle for a passenger car engine with premixed combustion in naturally aspirated operation. A fully variable electro-hydraulic valve train provided different valve lift profiles. Six load points, from 1.5 up to 5 bar brake mean effective pressure at a constant engine speed of 2000 min−1, were tested with 6 different intake valve lift/intake valve closing angle combinations. The intake valve closing angle was always set before bottom dead center to achieve the desired load with unthrottled operations. Experimental comparison with throttled operation outlines an indicated efficiency increase of up to 10% using high intake lift with early valve closing angle. Furthermore, this analysis outlines the influences that early intake valve closing angle has on fuel energy disposition. Longer combustion duration occurs using early intake valve closing angle because of turbulence dissipation effects, leading to slight reductions in the heat-to-work efficiency. However, overall pressure and temperature levels decrease and consequently heat losses and losses due to incomplete combustion decrease as well. Overall, we found that combustion deterioration is compensated/mitigated by the reduction of the heat losses so that reductions of pumping losses using early intake valve closing can be fully exploited to increase the engine’s efficiency.

A novel fully hydraulic variable valve system is described in this paper, which achieves continuous variations in maximum valve lift, valve opening duration, and the timing of valve closing. The load of the unthrottled spark ignition engine with fully hydraulic variable valve system is controlled by using an early intake valve closing rather than the conventional throttle valve. The experiments were carried out on BJ486EQ spark ignition engine with fully hydraulic variable valve system. Pumping losses of the throttled and unthrottled spark ignition engines at low-to-medium loads are compared and the reason of it decreasing significantly in the unthrottled spark igntion engine is analyzed. The combustion characteristic parameters, such as cyclic variation, CA50, and heat release rate, were analyzed. The primary reasons for the lower combustion rate in the unthrottled spark ignition engines are discussed. In order to improve the evaporation of fuel and mix with air in an unthrottled spark ignition engine, the in-cylinder swirl is organized with a helical intake valve, which can generate a strong intake swirl at low intake valve lifts. The effects of the intake swirl on combustion performance are investigated. Compared with the throttled spark ignition engine, the brake specific fuel consumption of the improved unthrottled spark ignition engine is reduced by 4.1% to 11.2%.

The inefficient running of the spark ignition engine at part loads due to the load control method but, mostly, their major weighting in the vehicle's operation time justifies the interest in the technical solutions, which act in this particular operating range. These drawbacks encountered at low part loads are even more amplified when considering larger engines. For instance, it is well known that, at the same engine load, a larger engine is more throttled than a smaller engine; therefore the concerns are the higher pumping work, the lower real compression ratio, and the overall mechanical efficiency, which is also lower. One solution is a reduction in the displacement without affecting the power output. This is what is now commonly known as the downsizing technique. The combination of downsizing and uploading an engine has been known for a long time. However, the conversion, in an acceptable way, of this potential to actual practice is very challenging. On the one hand, the degree of the downsizing is related to the boost pressure. In order to cope with the knocking phenomenon, the downsized high-pressure turbocharged gasoline engine requires a lower volumetric compression ratio that limits the efficiency on part loads. Therefore, the degree of the downsizing has been limited and, thus, the possible fuel consumption reduction has not yet been fully achieved. On the other hand, other problems are encountered when considering a downsized turbocharged gasoline engine: insufficient low-end torque, poor starting performance, and turbo lag. In order to solve these problems an effective combination of the downsized turbocharged gasoline engine with additional technologies is needed. Thus, the paper will present a so-called adaptive thermal engine, which has at the same time a variable compression ratio and a variable intake valve lift. It will then be demonstrated that it is highly suitable for turbocharging, thus resulting in a high downsizing factor.

This paper describes the development of an aggressive Miller cycle gasoline engine with stoichiometric combustion, a high expansion ratio of 12.5:1, a 65 crank angle degrees (CAD) longer duration Late-Intake-Valve-Closing (LIVC) cam, and a two-stage turbocharger. The full-load performance and part-load fuel consumption of the baseline and Miller cycle engines were assessed through engine dynamometer testing. The aggressive Miller cycle engine achieved the maximum Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP) of 22 bar at 1500 rpm, which was enabled by the 65 CAD longer duration LIVC cam to further reduce the effective compression for controlling knock and by the two-stage turbocharger to provide significantly higher boost for maintaining and increasing trapped mass. It was shown that the more aggressive Millerization was realized while maintaining the specific output and advantages of current downsized boosted engines, such as lower friction and lower pumping losses. The aggressive Miller cycle engine achieved above 6% brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) reduction over the baseline turbocharged spark-ignition engine on average. The 65 CAD longer duration LIVC cam provided the benefit of pumping loss reduction with delayed intake valve closing and the benefit of hot residual dilution with relatively advanced intake cam phasing simultaneously, which provided the significant fuel economy improvement at non-knocking light-load conditions. Even without the latest technology enhancements and friction reduction methods on its base engine hardware, the aggressive Miller cycle engine achieved a very broad BSFC island of 230 g/kWh or lower, with the lowest BSFC of 223 g/kWh at 2000 rpm and 10 bar BMEP.

The camless electromagnetic valve train (EMVT), as a fully flexible variable valve train, has enormous potential for improving engine performances. In this paper, a new valve strategy based on the electromagnetic intake valve train (EMIV) is proposed to achieve variable cylinder deactivation (VCD) on a four-cylinder gasoline engine. The 1D engine model was constructed in GT-Power according to test data. In order to analyze the VCD operation with the proposed valve strategy, the 1D model was validated using a 3D code. The effects of the proposed valve strategy were investigated from the perspective of energy loss of the transition period, the mass fraction of oxygen in the exhaust pipe, and the minimum in-cylinder pressure of the active cycle. On the premise of avoiding high exhaust oxygen and oil suction, the intake valve timing can be determined with the variation features of energy losses. It was found that at 1200 and 1600 rpm, fuel economy was improved by 12.5–16.6% and 9.7–14.6%, respectively, under VCD in conjunction with the early intake valve closing (EIVC) strategy when the brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) ranged from 0.3 MPa to 0.2 MPa.

A Fully Hydraulic Variable Valve System is described in this article which can achieve continuous variation in valve lift, duration, and timing. The system was installed in a four-cylinder port fuel injection spark ignition engine and achieved unthrottled load control through early intake valve closing. The in-cylinder pressure measured experimentally showed that pumping losses of the unthrottled spark ignition engine at 2000 r/min and 0.189 MPa brake mean effective pressure was reduced by 85.4% compared with the throttled spark ignition engine. However, its slow and unstable combustion reduced the indicated thermal efficiency. Compared with the throttled spark ignition engine, the amount of residual exhaust flowing back into the intake port was greatly reduced at the early stage of the intake process. Consequently, it negatively influenced fuel evaporation and fuel–air mixing processes in the intake port of the port fuel injection spark ignition engine and decreased the flow of in-cylinder gases, which resulted in a low combustion rate. A new centrosymmetric helical valve is proposed in this article to improve the fuel–air mixing and combustion rate of the unthrottled spark ignition engine. The experiments demonstrate that the helical valve can generate a strong intake swirl at small intake valve lift. It helps to increase combustion rate and lower cycle-to-cycle variation, which improves indicated thermal efficiency and fuel economy of the unthrottled spark ignition engine at low load.

In order to decrease Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions, Oxy-Fuel Combustion (OFC) technology with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is being developed in Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). In this article, a numerical study about the effects of intake charge on OFC was conducted in a dual-injection. Spark Ignition (SI) engine, with Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), Port Fuel Injection (PFI) and P-G (50% PFI and 50% GDI) three injection strategies. The results show that under OFC with fixed Oxygen Mass Fraction (OMF) and intake temperature, the maximum Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP) is each 5.671, 5.649 and 5.646 bar for GDI, P-G and PFI strategy, which leads to a considerable decrease compared to Conventional Air Combustion (CAC). [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] of PFI are the lowest among three injection strategies. With intake temperature increases from 298 to 378 K, the reduction of BMEP can be up to 12.68%, 12.92% and 12.75% for GDI, P-G and PFI, respectively. Meantime, there is an increase of about 3% in Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) and Brake Specific Oxygen Consumption (BSOC). Increasing OMF can improve the performance of BMEP and BSFC, and the trend is more apparent under GDI strategy. Besides, an increasing tendency can be observed for cylinder pressure and in-cylinder temperature under all injection strategies with the increase of OMF.

This paper deals with Numerical Study of 4-stoke, Single cylinder, Spark Ignition, Extended Expansion Lean Burn Engine. Engine processes are simulated using thermodynamic and global modeling techniques. In the simulation study following process are considered compression, combustion, and expansion. Sub-models are used to include effect due to gas exchange process, heat transfer and friction. Wiebe heat release formula was used to predict the cylinder pressure, which was used to find out the indicated work done. The heat transfer from the cylinder, friction and pumping losses also were taken into account to predict the brake mean effective pressure, brake thermal efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption. Extended Expansion Engine operates on Otto-Atkinson cycle. Late Intake Valve Closure (LIVC) technique is used to control the load. The Atkinson cycle has lager expansion ratio than compression ratio. This is achieved by increasing the geometric compression ratio and employing LIVC. Simulation result shows that there is an increase in thermal efficiency up to a certain limit of intake valve closure timing. Optimum performance is attained at 90 deg intake valve closure (IVC) timing further delaying the intake valve closure reduces the engine performance.

A variable valvetrain system is the key part of the variable stroke engine (VSE), which could achieve higher power performance and low-speed torque. An innovative axial shift valvetrain system (ASVS) was put forward to meet the air-charging requirements of a 2/4-stroke engine and complete a changeover within one working cycle. Two sets of intake and exhaust cam profiles for both intake and exhaust sides in the 2/4-stoke mode were designed for 2/4-stoke modes. Furthermore, a simulation model based on ADAMS was established to evaluate the dynamic valve motion and the contact force at different engine speeds. The dynamic simulation results show that the valve motion characteristics meet the challenges at the target engine speed of 3000 r/min. In two-stroke mode, the maximum intake valve lift could achieve 7.3 mm within 78°CaA, and the maximum exhaust valve lift could achieve 7.5 within 82°CaA on the exhaust side. In four-stroke mode, the maximum intake valve lift can achieve 8.8 mm within 140°CaA, and the maximum exhaust valve lift can achieve 8.4 mm within 140°CaA. The valve seating speeds are less than 0.3 m/s in both modes, and the fullness coefficients are more than 0.5 and 0.6 in the 2-stroke and 4-stroke mode, respectively. At the engine speed of 3000 r/min, the contact force on each component is acceptable, and the stress between cam and roller can meet the material requirement.
