In the last decade, the interest for higher reliability in several industrial applications has boosted the research activities in multiphase permanent magnet synchronous motors realized by multiple three-phase winding sets. In this study, a mathematical model of an asymmetric surface-mounted six-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor under high resistance connections was developed. By exploiting the intrinsic properties of multiphase machines in terms of degrees of freedom, an improved field-oriented control scheme is presented that allows online fault detection and a quite undisturbed operating condition of the machine under high resistance connections. More specifically, the proposed strategies for online fault-detection and fault-tolerance are based on the use of multi-reference frame current regulators. The feasibility of the proposed approach was theoretically analyzed, then confirmed by numerical simulations. In order to validate experimentally the proposed strategies, the entire control system was implemented using TMS-320F2812 based platform.

Owing to the superior properties and stable operation, the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is preferably used in wide industrial applications. But, the stability of motor is found to be dependent on its initial operating condition, showing the chaotic characteristic. Therefore, this paper addresses the chaos control of PMSM by developing four simple but effective controllers, which are mathematically designed by using the principle of Lyapunov’s method for asymptotic global stability. A comparative performance assessment has been carried out for the developed controllers in terms of settling time and peak over shoot. Furthermore, the concept of conventional proportional-integration type controller has been extended to develop two more controllers for chaos control of PMSM. Numerical simulation has been carried out in Matlab environment for performance evaluation of developed controllers. The obtained analytical results have been validated through experimental implementation in real time environment on Multisim/Ultiboard platform.

Permanent magnet synchronous motors are essential components in a wide range of applications in which their unique benefits are explored. However, in order for a permanent magnet synchronous motor to achieve satisfactory performance, particular control frameworks are essential. After all, permanent magnet synchronous motor is an AC machine, which is characterized by its complex structure and strongly coupled system states. Therefore, in order for it to achieve satisfactory dynamic performance, advanced control techniques are the only solution. This paper presents a precise speed control of permanent magnet synchronous motors using the nonlinear time-frequency control concept. The novel aspect of this nonlinear time-frequency control, which is an integration of discrete wavelet transformation and adaptive control, is its ability in analyzing the fundamental temporal and spectral qualities inherent of a permanent magnet synchronous motor and exerting control signals accordingly. Simulation results verifies that the proposed nonlinear time-frequency control scheme is feasible for alleviating the nonlinear behavior of the permanent magnet synchronous motor which hampers the tracking of speed with desired precision.

The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), a nonlinear dynamic system, can exhibit prominent chaotic characteristics under some choices of system parameters and external inputs. Based on a mathematical model of the permanent magnet synchronous motor, the existence of chaotic attractor is verified by the phase trajectory, Lyapunov exponent map and the bifurcation diagram. Chaotic phenomenon, such as a strong oscillation of speed and torque, unstable operating performance, affects the normal operation of motor. It makes the PMSM in a stable state to control chaos of the PMSM with a control strategy of infinitesimal geometry, which can eliminate chaos well.

Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is a leading technology for electric vehicles (EVs) and other high-performance industrial applications. These challenging applications demand robust fault diagnosis schemes, but conventional strategies based on models, system knowledge, and signal transformation have limitations that degrade the agility of diagnosing faults. These methods require extremely detailed design and consideration to remain robust against noise and disturbances in the actual application. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning have proven to be promising next-generation solutions for fault diagnosis. In this paper, a support-vector machine (SVM) utilizing sparse representation is developed to perform sensor fault diagnosis of a PMSM. A simulation model of the pertinent PMSM drive system for automotive applications is used to generate a set of labelled training example sets that the SVM uses to determine margins between normal and faulty operating conditions. The PMSM model includes input as a torque reference profile and disturbance as a constant road grade, against both of which faults must be detectable. Even with limited training, the SVM classifier developed in this paper is capable of diagnosing faults with a high degree of accuracy, suggesting that such methods are feasible for the demanding fault diagnosis challenge in PMSM.
