Multi-element thrusters operating with gaseous oxygen (GOX) and methane (GCH4) have been numerically studied and the results were compared to test data from the Technical University of Munich (TUM). A 3D Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes Equations (RANS) approach using a 60° sector as a simulation domain was used for the studies. The primary goals were to examine the effect of the turbulent Prandtl number approximations including local algebraic approaches and to study the influence of radiative heat transfer (RHT). Additionally, the dependence of the results on turbulence modeling was studied. Finally, an adiabatic flamelet approach was compared to an Eddy-Dissipation approach by applying an enhanced global reaction scheme. The normalized and absolute pressures, the integral and segment averaged heat flux were taken as an experimental reference. The results of the different modeling approaches were discussed, and the best performing models were chosen. It was found that compared to other discussed approaches, the BaseLine Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Model (BSL EARSM) provided more physical behavior in terms of mixing, and the adiabatic flamelet was more relevant for combustion. The effect of thermal radiation on the wall heat flux (WHF) was high and was strongly affected by spectral models and wall thermal emissivity. The obtained results showed good agreement with the experimental data, having a small underestimation for pressures of around 2.9% and a good representation of the integral wall heat flux.

The present work consists in a numerical examination of the dispersion of pollutants discharged from a bent chimney and crossing twin similar cubic obstacles placed in the lee side of the source. The resulting flow is assumed to be steady, three-dimensional and turbulent. Its modelling is based upon the resolution of the Navier Stokes equations by means of the finite volume method together with the RSM (Reynolds Stress Model) turbulent model. This examination aims essentially at detailing the wind flow perturbations, the recirculation and turbulence generated by the presence of the twin cubic obstacles placed tandem at different spacing distances (gaps): W = 4 h, W = 2 h and W = 1 h where W is the distance separating both buildings.

In this research, the flow around the autonomous underwater vehicles with symmetrical bodies is numerically investigated. Increasing the drag force in autonomous underwater vehicles increases the energy consumption and decreases the duration of underwater exploration and operations. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to decrease drag force with the change in geometry to reduce energy consumption. In this study, the decreasing or increasing trends of the drag force of axisymmetric bare hulls have been studied by making alterations in the curve equations and creating the optimal geometric shapes in terms of hydrodynamics for the noses and tails of autonomous underwater vehicles. The incompressible, three-dimensional, and steady Navier–Stokes equations have been used to simulate the flow. Also, k-ε Realizable with enhanced wall treatment was used for turbulence modeling. Validation results were acceptable with respect to the 3.6% and 1.4% difference with numerical and experimental results. The results showed that all the autonomous underwater vehicle hulls designed in this study, at an attack angle of 0°, had a lower drag force than the autonomous underwater vehicle hull used for validation except geometry no. 1. In addition, nose no. 3 has been selected as the best nose according to the lowest value of stagnation pressure, and also tail no. 3 has been chosen as the best tail due to the production of the lowest vortex. Therefore, geometry no. 5 has been designed using nose and tail no. 3. The comparison made here showed that the maximum drag reduction in geometry no. 5 was equal to 26%, and therefore, it has been selected as the best bare hull in terms of hydrodynamics.

<div> <p>Three-dimensional calculations were performed to simulate the flow around a cylindrical vegetation element using the Scale Adaptive Simulation (SAS) model; commonly, this is the first step of the modeling of the flow through multiple vegetation elements. SAS solves the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations in stable flow regions, while in regions with unstable flow it goes unsteady producing a resolved turbulent spectrum after reducing eddy viscosity according to the locally resolved vortex size represented by the von Karman length scale. A finite volume numerical code was used for the spatial discretisation of the rectangular computational domain with stream-wise, cross-flow and vertical dimensions equal to 30D, 11D and 1D, respectively, which was resolved with unstructured grids. Calculations were compared with experiments and Large Eddy Simulations (LES). Predicted overall flow parameters and mean flow velocities exhibited a very satisfactory agreement with experiments and LES, while the agreement of predicted turbulent stresses was satisfactory. Calculations showed that SAS is an efficient and relatively fast turbulence modeling approach, especially in relevant practical problems, in which the very high accuracy that can be achieved by LES at the expense of large computational times is not required.</p> </div> <p>&nbsp;</p>

The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), also called Karhunen-Loe`ve expansion, which extracts ‘coherent structures’ from experimental data, is a very efficient tool for analyzing and modeling turbulent flows. It has been shown that it converges faster than any other expansion in terms of kinetic energy (Lumley 1970). First, the POD is applied to the chaotic solution of the Lorenz equations. The dynamics of the Lorenz attractor is reconstructed by only the first three POD modes. In the second part of this paper, we show how the POD can be used in turbulence modeling. The particular case studied is the wall region of a turbulent boundary layer. In this flow, the velocity field is expanded into POD modes in the normal direction and Fourier modes in the streamwise and spanwise directions. Dynamical systems are obtained by Galerkin projections of the Navier Stokes equations onto the different modes. Aubry et al. (1988) applied the technique to derive and study a ten dimensional representation which reproduced qualitatively the bursting event experimentally observed. It is shown that streamwise modes, absent in Aubry et al.’s model, participate to the bursting events. This agrees remarkably well with experimental observations. In both examples, the dynamics of the original system is very well recovered from the contribution of only a few modes.

In this paper, a full transient analysis of the performance of a heat pipe with a wick structure is performed. For the vapor flow, the conventional Navier-Stokes equations are used. For the liquid flow in the wick structure, which is modeled as a porous media, volume averaged Navier-Stokes equation are adopted. The energy equation is solved for the solid wall and wick structure of the heat pipe. The energy and momentum equations are coupled through the heat flux at the liquid-vapor interface that defines the suction and blowing velocities for the liquid and vapor flow. The evolution of the vapor-liquid interface temperature is coupled through the heat flux at this interface that defines the mass flux to the vapor and the new saturation conditions to maintain a fully saturation vapor all the time. A control volume approach is used in the development of the numerical scheme. A parametric study is conducted to study the effect of different parameters that affect the thermal performance of the heat pipe. And experimental setup is developed and numerical results are validated with experimental data. The results of this study will be useful for the heat pipe design and implementation in processes that are essentially transient and steady state conditions are not reached like for example drilling applications.

The unsteady viscous flow and heat transfer in the vicinity of an axisymmetric stagnation point of an infinite rotating circular cylinder with transpiration U0 are investigated when the angular velocity and wall temperature or wall heat flux all vary arbitrarily with time. The free stream is steady and with a strain rate of Γ. An exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation is derived in this problem. A reduction of these equations is obtained by the use of appropriate transformations for the most general case when the transpiration rate is also time-dependent but results are presented only for uniform values of this quantity. The general self-similar solution is obtained when the angular velocity of the cylinder and its wall temperature or its wall heat flux vary as specified time-dependent functions. In particular, the cylinder may rotate with constant speed, with exponentially increasing/decreasing angular velocity, with harmonically varying rotation speed, or with accelerating/decelerating oscillatory angular speed. For self-similar flow, the surface temperature or its surface heat flux must have the same types of behavior as the cylinder motion. For completeness, sample semi-similar solutions of the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations have been obtained numerically using a finite-difference scheme. Some of these solutions are presented for special cases when the time-dependent rotation velocity of the cylinder is, for example, a step-function. All the solutions above are presented for Reynolds numbers, Re=Γa2∕2υ, ranging from 0.1 to 1000 for different values of Prandtl number and for selected values of dimensionless transpiration rate, S=U0∕Γa, where a is cylinder radius and υ is kinematic viscosity of the fluid. Dimensionless shear stresses corresponding to all the cases increase with the increase of Reynolds number and suction rate. The maximum value of the shear stress increases with increasing oscillation frequency and amplitude. An interesting result is obtained in which a cylinder rotating with certain exponential angular velocity function and at particular value of Reynolds number is azimuthally stress-free. Heat transfer is independent of cylinder rotation and its coefficient increases with the increasing suction rate, Reynolds number, and Prandtl number. Interesting means of cooling and heating processes of cylinder surface are obtained using different rates of transpiration.

AbstractIn this paper, we performed a comparison of four turbulence models using for numerical simulation of the hydrodynamic structure generated by a Rushton turbine in a cylindrical tank. The finite volume method was employed to solve the Navier-Stokes equations governing the transport of momentum. In this study four closure models tested were: k-ɛ standard, k-ɛ RNG, k-ɛ Realizable and RSM (Reynolds Stress Model). MRF (Multi Reference Frame) technique was used with FLUENT software package. The present work aimed to provide improved predictions of turbulent flow in a stirred vessel and in particular to assess the ability to predict the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy (e) that constitutes a most stringent test of prediction capability due to the small scales at which dissipation takes place. The amplitude of local and overall dissipation rate is shown to be strongly dependent on the choice of turbulence model. The numerical predictions were compared with literature results for comparable configurations and with experimental data obtained using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). A very good agreement was found with regards to turbulence.

“Twin jets in Crossflow” is a common configuration that finds application in several large and/or small scale industrial fields. The interest in such a configuration is further enhanced by its dependence in several parameters, that may be geometric, dynamic, thermal, or relative to the handled fluid composition. We propose to focus in the present work on the effect of the number of the emitted jets on the generated heat transfer, in presence of an unchanged uniform crossflow. To reach this goal, single, double and triple jet configurations were simulated, based upon the resolution of the Navier Stokes equations by means of the RSM (Reynolds Stress Model) second order turbulent closure model, together with a non uniform grid system particularly tightened near the emitting nozzles. After validation, we tried to find out the impact of the number of the handled jets on their cooling “power” by tracking the temperature distribution of the resulting flowfield. Since in practically all applications we are in need of higher efficiencies and then of higher operating temperatures, we are constantly concerned about not going beyond the shielding material melting temperature. If the use of cooling jets proves to be efficient, this may bring a significant progress in the technological field.

This study revisits the Reynolds-averaged Navier--Stokes equations (RANS) and finds that the existing literature is erroneous regarding the primary unknowns and the number of independent unknowns in the RANS. The literature claims that the Reynolds stress tensor has six independent unknowns, but in fact the six unknowns can be reduced to three that are functions of the three velocity fluctuation components, because the Reynolds stress tensor is simply an integration of a second-order dyadic tensor of flow velocity fluctuations rather than a general symmetric tensor. This difficult situation is resolved by returning to the time of Reynolds in 1895 and revisiting Reynolds' averaging formulation of turbulence. The study of turbulence modeling could focus on the velocity fluctuations instead of on the Reynolds stress. An advantage of modeling the velocity fluctuations is, from both physical and experimental perspectives, that the velocity fluctuation components are observable whereas the Reynolds stress tensor is not.
