A person of integrity is someone who stands virtuously for her commitments. We receive some direct moral instruction, but the process of developing integrity gets underway in earnest when we glimpse, however dimly, the special goodness of this particular virtue and desire to instantiate it. Exemplars are studied and emulated. One’s own successes and failures in emulation are scrutinized. The role of trusting relationships and supportive communities is essential, even as insulation from critique short-circuits the development of integrity. The account developed here clarifies how it can be the case that admiration and emulation play such a key role in the acquisition of a virtue like integrity, despite the fact that integrity has to do with a willingness to stand for one’s own commitments and therefore for one’s own best judgments.

AbstractMobile money schemes have grown rapidly in some developing countries but failed in many more. This paper reports the results of an empirical study of mobile money schemes in 22 developing countries chosen based on prior evidence to include roughly equal numbers of successes and failures. It uses a combination of quantitative and qualitative evidence to determine why some countries succeeded in launching mobile money schemes and others failed. The analysis is guided by multi-sided platform economics and in particular recent work on the role of ignition and critical mass. It finds among other things heavy regulation, and in particular an insistence that banks play a central role in the schemes, which is generally fatal to igniting mobile money schemes.

When performing research for this book it was hard to pick the states to focus on. The following states opened the door to talk about their successes and failures. This chapter is about highlighting several states and position in the creative economy, what projects they are focusing on and their plans for the future. The author hopes that disruptive leaders will see the need and step up to fulfill the role of championing the creative economy in their states.

Austria was one of the countries that played an important role in the development of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership program, that is aimed at the rapproachment of six post-Soviet states closer to European Union. In addition to promoting the program at the national level, that is strongly associated with the name of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, the Austrians were also responsible for it at the EU level. Suffice it to say that the Austrians Benita Ferrero-Waldner and Johannes Hahn held the positions of European commis- sioners responsible for foreign and neighborhood policy of the European Union for many years. In 2018, Austria was the EU Presidency, and the promotion of the Eastern Partnership has become one of the priorities of the Austrian pres- idency. Especially noteworthy is the role of Austria in the settlement of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, where the Austrians acted on the line of not only the European Union, but also the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, and the special representative of the Organization for the Donbas became the Austrian Martin Sajdik. In addition, Austria did a lot for the devel- opment of relations between the European Union and Belarus. In general, the share of Austrian responsibility for the successes and failures of the develop- ment of relations between the European Union and the six post-Soviet states of the Eastern Partnership program should be recognized as very significant.

“Thin Edge of Barbwire,” a reference to Gloria Anzaldúa’s poetry, doubles as the title of this paper and a collaborative art project undertaken by university art students resulting in the creation of a 30’ wall. This project was, in effect, a response to the Trump presidency and students’ fear of increased violence on the border. This paper describes in detail the month-long unit that included readings, dialog, and creative responses to recent histories of the border and students’ personal relationship to violence on the border. I use the project as a case study to consider antiracist pedagogies, confronting white-supremacy in the classroom, and successes and failures of the project. Finally, I reflect broadly on the role of creative and artistic response to political crises.

The article proposes to present the implantation of Protestantism in Brazil from the perspective of the social and political actions of this religious movement. We wish to present briefly the Protestant ethos: its potentialities, successes and failures, especially in Brazilian lands. And within this universe, a specific question concerning the social and political role of Protestantism. The core of the article is simple and can be substantiated by the following question: Has Brazilian Protestantism in its historical trajectory in our country given any really relevant contribution in social and political terms? If yes, what are they? And how did they happen? If not, what went wrong? And for what reasons?

Objective – New product performance is very important for the survival of any company. This research uses the Grounded Theory Method (GTM) to determine the factors that are relevant to the success and failure of new products. The study focuses specifically on new products in the Training Division of XYZ management. Methodology/Technique – The data for this study was collected using the interview method with the total of 5 respondents, researcher’s involvement per se and FGDs. Findings – The coding process resulted in the creation of 4 groups comprised of the 3 main questions containing 20 factors relevant to new product failure. These factors were previously confirmed by a survey conducted among 26 NPD practitioners from various industries. This research identifies that the steps involved in the development of new products have not been optimally conducted in accordance with the new product development guidelines. The results of this study explain the role of telemarketers and sales managers which can change and affect the performance of a new product. Novelty - The involvement of the researcher as a telemarketer highlights the importance of the role and need of a reliable technological system to support the performance of new products. The findings of this research provide a greater understanding of the factors that contribute to product failure, namely a lack of a specific strategy for new products, less aggressive sales techniques, and the shifting role of telemarketers and sales managers. Type of Paper: Empirical. JEL Classification: M1; M11. Keywords: New Product Performance; New Product Development Process; Sales Manager; Telemarketer. This chapter follows the Ford administration’s efforts throughout 1975 to lobby Congress to lift the embargo and embargo supporters’ response to this pressure, highlighting the successes and failures of each. It examines the lobbying efforts of Greek, Armenian, and Jewish Americans to maintain the sanctions on Turkey. It discusses the reasons for the initial failure to pass the Scott bill in the summer of 1975, followed by the administration’s more successful campaign in the fall of that year. It focuses on the critical role of John Rhodes and the minority Republicans in this controversy. Finally, it discusses the elimination of the opium issue as a factor in US-Turkish relations by the end of 1975.

Chapter 1 presents a framework for examining the large-scale historical questions posed by The Southern Key, discussing both issues of philosophy of social science and the main theoretical constructs that underpin the work. It argues for the centrality of the economy, in contrast to the currently popular cultural analysis. It also examines what allows workers to have power in capitalist societies, and why some groups of workers have more leverage than others. And it highlights the central role of leadership in determining the successes and failures of labor struggles.
