Sheet cavitation inception can be influenced by laminar boundary layer flow separation under Reynolds numbers regimes with transitional flow. The lack of accurate prediction of laminar separation may lead to massive over-prediction of sheet cavitation under certain circumstances, including model scale hydrofoils and marine propellers operating at relatively low Reynolds number. For non-cavitating flows, the local correlation based transition model, γ−Reθ transition model, has been found to provide predictions of laminar separation and resulting boundary layer transition. In the present study, the predicted laminar separation using γ−Reθ transition model is bridged with a cavitation mass transfer model to improve sheet cavitation predictions on hydrofoils and model scale marine propellers. The bridged model is developed and applied to study laminar separation and sheet cavitation predictions on the NACA16012 hydrofoil under different Reynolds numbers and angles of attack. As a reference case, the open case of the PPTC VP1304 model scale marine propeller tested on an inclined shaft is studied. Lastly as an application case, the predictions of cavitation on a commercial marine propeller from Kongsberg is presented for model scale conditions. Simulations using the bridged model and the standard unbridged approach with k−ωSST turbulence model are performed using the open-source package OpenFOAM, both using the Schnerr–Sauer cavitation mass transfer model, and the respective results are compared with available experimental results. The predictions using the bridged model agree well compared to experimental measurements and show significant improvements compared to the unbridged approach.

A laminar separation on a body provides a site for the inception of cavitation. The separated region disappears when the boundary layer upstream becomes turbulent; this may occur naturally or by stimulation. The consequences of this disappearance on the values of the cavitation inception index and the type and appearance of the cavitation at inception are investigated on three different axisymmetric bodies. On one of these bodies, a hemisphere-cylinder, a trip near the nose so energized the boundary layer that it was impossible for any form of cavitation to remain attached to the body even when a tension of about one half atm. existed at the minimum pressure point on the body.

The inception of cavitation in the steady flow of liquids around bodies is seen to depend upon the real fluid flow around the bodies as well as the supply of nucleating cavitation sources—or nuclei—within the fluid. A primary distinction is made between bodies having a laminar separation or not having a laminar separation. The former group is relatively insensitive to the nuclei concentration whereas the latter is much more sensitive. Except for the case of fully separated wake flows and for gaseous cavitation by diffusion the cavitation inception index tends always to be less than the magnitude of the minimum pressure coefficient and only approaches that value for high Reynolds numbers in flows well supplied with nuclei.

Aerodynamic efficiency of an airplane wing can be improved either by increasing its lift generation tendency or by reducing the drag. Recently, Bio-inspired designs have been received greater attention for the geometric modifications of airplane wings. One of the bio-inspired designs contains sinusoidal Humpback Whale (HW) tubercles, i.e., protuberances exist at the wing leading edge (LE). The tubercles have excellent flow control characteristics at low Reynolds numbers. The present work describes about the effect of tubercles on swept back wing performance at various Angle of Attack (AoA). NACA 0015 and NACA 4415 airfoils are used for swept back wing design with sweep angle about 30°. The modified wings (HUMP 0015 A, HUMP 0015 B, HUMP 4415 A, HUMP 4415 B) are designed with two amplitude to wavelength ratios (η) of 0.1 & 0.24 for the performance analysis. It is a novel effort to analyze the tubercle vortices along the span that induce additional flow energy especially, behind the tubercles peak and trough region. Subsequently, Co-efficient of Lift (CL), Co-efficient of Drag (CD) and boundary layer pressure gradients also predicted for modified and baseline (smooth LE) models in the pre & post-stall regimes. It was observed that the tubercles increase the performance of swept back wings by the enhanced CL/CD ratio in the pre-stall AoA region. Interestingly, the flow separation region behind the centerline of tubercles and formation of Laminar Separation Bubbles (LSB) were asymmetric because of the sweep.

The AP1000 containment model has been developed by using WGOTHIC version 4.2 code. Condensation heat and mass transfer from the volumes to the containment shell, conduction through the shell, and evaporation from the shell to the riser were all calculated by using the special CLIMEs model. In this paper, the latest GOTHIC version 8.0 code is used to model both condensation and evaporation heat and mass transfer process. An improved heat and mass transfer model, the diffusion layer model (DLM), is adopted to model the condensation on the inside wall of containment. The Film heat transfer coefficient option is used to model the evaporation on the outside wall of containment. As a preliminary code consolidation effort, it is possible to use GOTHIC 8.0 code as a tool to analysis the AP1000 containment response.
