The paper evaluated the possibility of manufacturing wood-based boards from the material left over from sawmill processing of wood. The boards were made from chips created during cant preparation for cutting and sawdust generated during further sawnwood preparation. They were made as one- and three-ply boards with face layers containing industrial microchips. Mechanical properties determined for one-ply boards in a bend test were used as guidelines for manufacturing three-ply boards. The outcomes were much better when the core layer comprised a mix of chips and sawdust than the chips alone. The study also showed that for the assumed technological parameters it is possible to produce three-ply boards with properties meeting the criteria for P2 furniture boards.

An attempt to use „Tetra Pak” waste material in particleboard technology. The study investigates the effect of addition Tetra Pak waste material in the core layer on physical and mechanical properties of chipboard. Three-layer chipboards with a thickness of 16 mm and a density of 650 kg / m3 were manufactured. The share of Tetra Pak waste material in the boards was varied: 0%, 5%, 10% and 25%. The density profile was measured to determine the impact of Tetra Pak share on the density distribution. In addition, the manufactured boards were tested for strength (MOR, MOE, IB), thickness swelling and water absorption after immersion in water for 2 and 24 hours. The tests revealed that Tetra Pak share does not affect significantly the value of static bending strength and modulus of elasticity of the chipboard, but it significantly decreases IB. Also, it has been found that Tetra Pak insignificantly decreases the value of swelling and water absorption of the chipboards.

In this study, the effect of mat moisture content on the physical and mechanical properties of particleboard was investigated. The experimental boards were produced by using 40 % softwood, 45 % hardwood chips, and 15 % sawdust. The formaldehyde resin/adhesive was used in three-layers (bottom-top layer 12 %, core layer 8 %). Multi-opening press was used during manufacturing the experimental particleboards. The physical and mechanical properties of boards obtained were identified according to the TS-EN standards. The optimum core layer moisture content was determined as 6 % and 7 % according to the results, whereas the moisture content of bottom and top layers was 14 %. Under these moisture content conditions, the bending strength was found to be 13.3 N/mm², the modulus of elasticity in bending 2466 N/mm², and internal bonding strength 0.44 N/mm². The optimum bottom-top layer moisture content was determined to be between 13 % and 15 % and 6.5 % for the core layer.

An experimental study was carried out to develop and examine the properties of a new type of structural insulated panel (SIP). SIP prototypes conducted from this research consisted of insulated foam manufactured from natural rubber filled with wood particles as the core layer and three kinds of commercial wood-composite boards (plywood, cement particleboard, and fiber-cement board) as the surface layers. Polyurethane was used as an adhesive bond between the surface and the core layer. This preformed panel was placed into a clamping device and compressed until adhesive curing was achieved. The physical and mechanical properties of the SIP prototypes were consequently evaluated. The test results indicated that the types of surface layer materials played a significant effect on the SIP properties. The SIP covered with cement particleboard and fiber-cement board revealed high mechanical properties and high water resistance. The SIP prototype covered with plywood showed desirable properties (such as low density, high resistance of screw withdrawal, and low thermal transmittance). However, high water absorption and low fire resistance were drawbacks of the SIP covered with plywood. These properties should be improved.

This paper presents the results of experimental studies of the physical and mechanical properties of wood-fiber boards of the wet production method when regulating the design and technological parameters of the grinding process. This allowed us to determine the influence of the working clearance between the grinding discs and the concentration of fibre mass with the subject to of quality change wood fiber after defibrator using the developed construction of the disc fibrillation action on the physico-mechanical properties of boards. As a result of the experiment, regression models were obtained that adequately describe the studied grinding process and allow predicting the values of physical and mechanical properties of the finished product depending on the established  parameters process. A comparative analysis of the size and quality characteristics of the fiber semi-finished product and its fractional composition when using a developed construction the disc of refiner fibrillation action and a traditional design used in industry is carried out. The preferential efficiency of the grinding process under the fibrillating effect the disc of refiner in comparison with the traditional construction disc of refiner is established. As a result, there is a significant improvement in the quality indicators of the fiber semi-finished product and its composition due to the formation and predominance in the total mass of long and thin, respectively, flexible fibrillated fibers with high tile-forming properties, which allows to increase the strength properties of the product (by 20–25%), without using binding resins.

In the last decades there is increasing the need to apply polymer composite materials in different industries, particularly in shipbuilding. There are developing single structures made from polymer composite materials to be used on board ships. The article focuses on technology of manufacturing slabs from polymer composite materials to carry out mechanical testing in the laboratory special standard units. Mechanical properties of polymer composite materials depend on molding technologies. There has been described a technology of sample manufacturing from polymer composite materials reinforced with glass fiber mat with fiberglass plastics. The technique of testing the specified samples for tensile strength has been considered. The sizes and shapes of the samples as well as the technological parameters of the manufacturing process have been validated, depending on the standard requirements and the technological features of the testing machine. The physical and mechanical properties of the components that make up the composite materials are considered. The sequence of stacking layers for preparation of plates from composite materials is indicated. The dimensions of the plates for cutting out finished samples are determined, depending on the method of production. The way of laying plates from composite materials has been chosen on the base of economic considerations and conditions of accessibility. The obtained results of mechanical properties can be used in solving problems of application of polymer composite materials in shipbuilding, for example, in manufacturing superstructures of some dry cargo vessels.

Thermoplastic films exhibit good potential to be used as adhesives for the production of veneer-based composites. This work presents the first effort to develop and evaluate composites based on alder veneers and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) film. The effects of hot-pressing temperature (140, 160, and 180 °C), hot-pressing pressure (0.8, 1.2, and 1.6 MPa), hot-pressing time (1, 2, 3, and 5 min), and type of adhesives on the physical and mechanical properties of alder plywood panels were investigated. The effects of these variables on the core-layer temperature during the hot pressing of multiplywood panels using various adhesives were also studied. Three types of adhesives were used: urea–formaldehyde (UF), phenol–formaldehyde (PF), and HDPE film. UF and PF adhesives were used for the comparison. The findings of this work indicate that formaldehyde-free HDPE film adhesive gave values of mechanical properties of alder plywood panels that are comparable to those obtained with traditional UF and PF adhesives, even though the adhesive dosage and pressing pressure were lower than when UF and PF adhesives were used. The obtained bonding strength values of HDPE-bonded alder plywood panels ranged from 0.74 to 2.38 MPa and met the European Standard EN 314-2 for Class 1 plywood. The optimum conditions for the bonding of HDPE plywood were 160 °C, 0.8 MPa, and 3 min.
