TiB crystal whiskers (TiBw) can be synthesized in situ in Ti alloy matrix through powder metallurgy for the preparation of a new type of ceramic fiber-reinforced Ti matrix composite (TMC) TiBw/Ti-6Al-4V. In the TiBw/Ti-6Al-4V TMC, the reinforced phase/matrix interface is clean and has superior comprehensive mechanical properties, but its machinability is degraded. Hence, the bonding of reliable materials is important. To further optimize the TiBw/Ti-6Al-4V brazing technology and determine the relationship between the microstructure and tensile property of the brazed joint, results demonstrate that the elements of brazing filler metal are under sufficient and uniform diffusion, the microstructure is the typical Widmanstätten structure, and fine granular compounds in β phase are observed. The average tensile strength of the brazing specimen is 998 MPa under room temperature, which is 97.3% of that of the base metal. During the high-temperature (400 °C) tensile process, a fracture occurred at the base metal of the highest tensile test specimen with strength reaching 689 MPa, and the tensile fracture involved a combination of intergranular and transgranular modes at both room temperature and 400 °C. The fracture surface has dimples, secondary cracks are generated by the fracture of TiB whiskers, and large holes form when whole TiB whiskers are removed. The proposed algorithm provides evidence for promoting the application of TiBw/Ti-6Al-4V TMCs in practical production.

WAl12 reinforced 2024 aluminum alloy matrix composites were prepared by powder metallurgy with tungsten particles and W50Al50 alloy particles. The effects of WAl12 on the mechanical properties of 2024 aluminum alloy composites at room temperature and high temperature were studied, and the friction behavior was characterized. The results show that intermetallic WAl12 phase forms in the composite by 2024 aluminum alloy and tungsten. The mechanical properties and friction behavior can be improved by the formation of intermetallic WAl12 phase. The tensile strength of 2024 aluminum alloy at room temperature and 180 °C can be improved by adding tungsten less than 1.5 at.%. Adding 2.0 at.% tungsten can reduce the friction coefficient by 20 % and the scratch width by 40 %. The tensile fracture surface of the sample was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), indicating that WAl12 intermetallic phase is closely connected with the aluminum matrix.

Al matrix composite, reinforced with the in situ synthesized 3C–SiC, MgAl2O4, and MgO grains, was produced via the casting process using phenolic resin pyrolysis products in flash mode. The contents and microstructure of the composites’ fracture characteristics were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mechanical properties were tested by universal testing machine. Owing to the strong propulsion formed in turbulent flow in the pyrolysis process, nano-ceramic grains were formed in the resin pyrolysis process and simultaneously were homogeneously scattered in the alloy matrix. Thermodynamic calculation supported that the gas products, as carbon and oxygen sources, had a different chemical activity on in situ growth. In addition, ceramic (3C–SiC, MgAl2O4, and MgO) grains have discrepant contents. Resin pyrolysis in the molten alloy decreased oxide slag but increased pores in the alloy matrix. Tensile strength (142.6 ± 3.5 MPa) had no change due to the cooperative action of increased pores and fine grains; the bending and compression strength was increasing under increased contents of ceramic grains; the maximum bending strength was 378.2 MPa in 1.5% resin-added samples; and the maximum compression strength was 299.4 MPa. Lath-shaped Si was the primary effect factor of mechanical properties. The failure mechanism was controlled by transcrystalline rupture mechanism. We explain that the effects of the ceramic grains formed in the hot process at the condition of the resin exist in mold or other accessory materials. Meanwhile, a novel ceramic-reinforced Al matrix was provided. The organic gas was an excellent source of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen to in situ ceramic grains in Al alloy.

This study investigated the microstructure and mechanical properties of the wide-gap region brazed with various powder mixing ratios of additive powder (IN738) to filler metal powder (DF4B). The wide-gap brazing process was carried out in a vacuum of 2×10-5 torr at 1230°C for 1 hr. The microstructure of the brazed region was analyzed by FESEM and AES. The wide-gap region brazed with 60wt.% IN738 additive powder and 40 wt.% DF 4B filler metal powder had a microstructure consisting of Ni solid solution + γ' and (Cr, W)2B. The fracture strength of the wide-gap region brazed with 60 wt.% IN738 additive and 40 wt.% DF 4B powder was as high as 832 MPa at room temperature. It was found that the (Cr, W)2B and pores in the brazed region are important microstructural factors affecting the mechanical properties of the wide-gap brazed region.

Ti3Al-Nb alloy (Ti-24Al-15Nb) was welded by a pulsed laser welding system without and with pure Nb filler metal. The results indicated that pure Nb filler metal had profound effects on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the laser-welded joints. The joint without filler metal consisted of the weld zone (α’2 + B2), heat affected zone HAZ1 (α2 + B2), HAZ2 (α2 + O + B2) and base metal (α2 + O + B2), and gas pores were generated in the weld resulting in the deterioration of the joint strength (330 MPa) and elongation (1.9%). When the Nb filler metal was used, the weld microstructure (NbTi solid solution + O + B2) was obtained, and the joint properties were significantly improved, which was associated with the strengthening effect of the NbTi solid solution, O phase precipitation and the slip transmission between O and B2 phases, and the restraining of the formation of martensite (α’2) and gas pores in the weld. The strength (724 MPa) and elongation (5.1%) of the joint increased by 119.4% and 168.4% compared with those of the joint without filler metal, and the joint strength was able to reach 81.7% of the base metal strength (886 MPa). It is favorable to use pure Nb filler metal for improving the mechanical properties of laser-welded Ti3Al-Nb alloy joints.

Abstract The present work investigates the possibility of using powder metallurgy processing for producing a metal matrix composite. Materials were prepared from AlSi5Cu2 chips with reinforcement of 10, 15, 20 wt. % silicon carbide. Aluminum alloy chips were milled with SiC powder in a high-energy ball mill by 40 hours. Mechanical alloying process lead to obtain an uniform distribution of hard SiC particles in the metallic matrix and refine the grain size. The consolidation of composite powders was performed by vacuum hot pressing at 450°C, under pressure of 600 MPa by 10 min. The results shows that the addition of SiC particles has a substantial influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties of composite powder as well as consolidated material. Hot pressing is an effective consolidation method which leads to obtain dense AlSi5Cu2/SiC composite with homogeneous structure and advanced mechanical properties.

A novel 3D printing route to fabricate continuous fiber reinforced metal matrix composite (CFRMMC) is proposed in this paper. It is distinguished from the 3D printing process of polymer matrix composite that utilizes the pressure inside the nozzle to combine the matrix with the fiber. This process combines the metallic matrix with the continuous fiber by utilizing the wetting and wicking performances of raw materials to form the compact internal structures and proper fiber-matrix interfaces. CF/Pb50Sn50 composites were printed with the Pb50Sn50 alloy wire and modified continuous carbon fiber. The mechanical properties of the composite specimens were studied, and the ultimate tensile strength reached 236.7 MPa, which was 7.1 times that of Pb50Sn50 alloy. The fracture and interfacial microstructure were investigated and analyzed. The relationships between mechanical properties and interfacial reactions were discussed. With the optimized process parameters, several composites parts were printed to demonstrate the advantages of low cost, short fabrication period and flexibility in fabrication of complex structures.
