This paper extends two fuzzy ranking data envelopment analysis (DEA) approaches to the case of general networks of processes. The first approach provides an efficiency score for each possibility level which requires solving one linear program for each possibility level. The second approach is even simpler and provides an overall efficiency score solving just one linear program. The proposed approaches are tested on two datasets from the literature and compared with other fuzzy network DEA approaches. The results show that the two methods provide very highly correlated efficiency estimates which are also consistent with those of other fuzzy network DEA approaches.

We propose a network DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) model that consists of internal and external service processes and employs customer satisfaction as an intermediate factor. Using the proposed model, we calculate four efficiency scores: service productivity score drawn from internal service process, service efficiency score drawn from external service process, overall efficiency score drawn from both internal and external service processes, and management efficiency score calculated without the intermediate output. By analyzing the four efficiency scores, we find that overall efficiency score is well suited to represent a hotel’s comprehensive productivity. Our results support the validity of a network DEA model which includes customer satisfaction for analyzing hotel efficiency. Despite its important role that plays in hotel efficiency, customer satisfaction has been barely considered in the previous hotel efficiency studies. By analyzing hotel efficiency including customer satisfaction, this study sheds new light on the hotel efficiency research area and provides a valuable basis for future research.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate transit-oriented development (TOD) efficiency in Seoul using the network slacks-based measure data envelopment analysis (NSBM DEA) model. The smartcard data and socio-economic data are used to evaluate the transit efficiency of 352 subway station areas in Seoul. To measure the TOD efficiency, the two-stage network is designed with the transit design stage and the transit efficiency stage. The overall efficiency score of each station area is estimated through each score of the stage. The results of the efficiency evaluation by station area indicate that the overall efficiency score average is 0.349, with the transit design score and efficiency score estimated to be 0.453 and 0.245, respectively. The results indicate that the balance of each stage is crucial to achieve an efficient station in the concept of transit efficiency. With the efficiency scores of the 352 subway station areas, the TOD efficiency is also evaluated by the administrative units in Seoul. The results of district analysis reveal that the top 10 efficient administrative units are characterized by both residential and commercial land use. The results indicate that efficiency is found to be good in areas having both residential and commercial characteristics.

This article describes how to improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the aviation sector and also to source extra funding, the Government of India has paved the way for private investors through to a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model since the 1980s. This liberalization step in the Indian aviation market has minimized the institutional barriers which have hindered the freedom and flexibility of air transport operations among private investors. Now, competition within the aviation sector has become fiercer; the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Public Private Partnership (PPP) in Indian airports are not only providing varied services, but also attracting consumers with new infrastructure and full modern facilities. The importance of this article is because after privatization, no studies have been conducted to examine the efficiency of Indian airports by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). An output-oriented DEA model is employed to determine the efficiency score of airports by taking a sample of 15 airports, including airports run by PPP, for comparison. Output-oriented DEA calculates the efficiency by maximizing the outputs for a given level of inputs. Therefore, this article contributes to the existing literature on Indian airports. Based on available data, three variables - length of runways, terminal size and number of check-in counters, are used as inputs and two variables - passenger movement and aircraft movement, are used as outputs.

In contrast to parametric approaches which try to optimize a single regression function through the observed data set, DEA optimizes on each individual observation with a objective of calculating a discrete piece-wise linear frontier. In the so-called preliminary DEA efficiency evaluation, whether or not a DMU is efficient is solely determined by the solution of the linear programming problem constructed for this particular DMU. In our proposed ranking method, we assess the efficiency performance of a particular DMU based not only on its efficiency score when the DMU is standing out in the objective function of the linear problem but also its efficiency ratios under the optimal solutions of other n-1 linear programming problems. This constitutes the overall efficiency performance of a DMU. A ranking procedure is developed to rank the n DMUs in terms of the overall efficiency performance.

Benchmarking is a powerful and thriving tool to enhance the performance and profitabilities of organizations in business engineering. Though performance benchmarking has been practically and theoretically developed in distinct fields such as banking, education, health, and so on, benchmarking of supply chains with multiple echelons that include certain characteristics such as intermediate measure differs from other practices. In spite of incremental benchmarking activities in practice, there is the dearth of a unified and effective guideline for benchmarking in organizations. Amongst the benchmarking tools, data envelopment analysis (DEA) as a non-parametric technique has been widely used to measure the relative efficiency of firms. However, the conventional DEA models that are bearing out precise input and output data turn out to be incapable of dealing with uncertainty, particularly when the gathered data encompasses natural language expressions and human judgements. In this paper, we present an imprecise network benchmarking for the purpose of reflecting the human judgments with the fuzzy values rather than precise numbers. In doing so, we propose the fuzzy network DEA models to compute the overall system scale and technical efficiency of those organizations whose internal structure is known. A classification scheme is presented based upon their fuzzy efficiencies with the aim of classifying the organizations. We finally provide a case study of the airport and travel sector to elucidate the details of the proposed method in this study.

One of the new concepts that have found a considerable position in many countries of the world is organizing EFQM organizational excellence models. Different organizations and institutions have been evaluated and compared on its basis, and the move towards improvement and promotion is strengthened in them due to creation of competitive space. The EFQM organizational excellence model cannot remove the managers’ and users’ need for the levels of quantitative goals’ operation solely. Thus, requirement for a tool which considers quantitative goals and present environment was felt, and in this manner, various assessment processes were created to be used in different organizations; one of the most important ones is the technique for Data Envelopment Analysis. Evaluating organization efficiency based on the EFQM model is one of the strategic managerial tools in many organizations. The classic DEA models were designed to work with deterministic data and cannot deal with uncertainties in their inputs. The techniques developed so far for fuzzy performance evaluation are also very limited. Given that the inputs and outputs of a real system are not always definite and accurate and that some data can only be expressed in vague verbal and subjective terms, the use of fuzzy sets in modeling is inevitable (Ali et al., 2019). In this paper, a Network Data Envelopment Analysis Model is proposed in fuzzy conditions for assessing units of an organization based on an organizational excellence model. The suggestive model utilizes the privileges of both Fuzzy Network Data Envelopment Analysis and EFQM organizational excellence models simultaneously in order to assess organization’s efficiency. The Fuzzy Network Data Envelopment Analysis model is able to calculate the whole organization’s efficiency as well as organization’s efficiency separately for various phases of the organizational excellence model. Another privilege of the suggested model is that it utilizes fuzzy theory and concepts for modeling and observance of existing noncertainties in the experts’ views while assessing organization’s excellence criteria. The EFQM-fuzzy network DEA model is applied for assessing a holding’s organizational units within the discipline of “project management.”

Traditional data envelopment analysis (DEA) models consider a production system as a black-box without taking into consideration its internal linked activities. In recent years, a number of DEA studies have been presented to estimate efficiency score of two-stage network production systems in which all outputs of the first stage (intermediate products) are used as inputs of the second stage to produce final outputs. This paper aims to develop a two-stage network DEA model to study economic notion of economies of scope (ES) between two products. It intends to determine profitability of joint production of two products by one firm. Numerical illustrations are presented to show applicability of proposed methods.

The Financial Master Plan (2001- 2010) aims to enhance the capacity of banking industry so that higher effic iency and productivity can be reaped in the future. This study seeks to determine the impact of merger on the efficiency and productivity ofcommercial banks in Malaysia for the period 1995 until 2005. The study uses a non-parametric approach, nam ely DEA (data envelopment analysis?) to estimate the efficiency scores and to construct the Malmquist productivity index. To enable this estimation, three bank inputs and outputs are used. Amongst the findings are those banks exhibit higher efficiency score after the merger and thefo reign banks are more efficient than the local banks. Productivity of the banks is calculated in both periods, before and after the merger: The results show that, it is the local banks that have improved the most after the merger. The main source of productivity is technical change or innovation. The findings support the existing policy of having larger domestic banks in term of size.

The selection of advanced manufacturing technologies (AMTs) is an essential yet complex decision that requires careful consideration of various performance criteria. In real-world applications, there are cases that observations are difficult to measure precisely, observations are represented as linguistic terms, or the data need to be estimated. Since the growth of engineering sciences has been the key reason for the increased utilization of AMTs, this paper develops a fuzzy network data envelopment analysis (DEA) to the selection of AMT alternatives considering multiple decision-makers (DMs) and weight restrictions when the input and output data are represented as fuzzy numbers. By viewing the multiple DMs as a network one, the data provided by each DM can then be taken into account in evaluating the overall performances of AMT alternatives. In the solution process, we obtain the overall and DMs efficiency scores of each AMT alternative at the same time, and a relationship in which the former is a weighted average of the latter is also derived. Since the final evaluation results of AMTs are fuzzy numbers, a ranking procedure is employed to determine the most preferred one. An example is used to illustrate the applicability of the proposed methodology.
