We theoretically study the multiple sharp Fano resonances produced by the near-field coupling between the multipolar narrow plasmonic whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) and the broad-sphere plasmon modes supported by a deep-subwavelength spherical hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) cavity, which is constructed by five alternating silver/dielectric layers wrapping a dielectric nanosphere core. We find that the linewidths of WGMs-induced Fano resonances are as narrow as 7.4–21.7 nm due to the highly localized feature of the electric fields. The near-field coupling strength determined by the resonant energy difference between WGMs and corresponding sphere plasmon modes can lead to the formation of the symmetric-, asymmetric-, and typical Fano lineshapes in the far-field extinction efficiency spectrum. The deep-subwavelength feature of the proposed HMM cavity is verified by the large ratio (~5.5) of the longest resonant wavelength of WGM1,1 (1202.1 nm) to the cavity size (diameter: 220 nm). In addition, the resonant wavelengths of multiple Fano resonances can be easily tuned by adjusting the structural/material parameters (the dielectric core radius, the thickness and refractive index of the dielectric layers) of the HMM cavity. The narrow linewidth, multiple, and tunability of the observed Fano resonances, together with the deep-subwavelength feature of the proposed HMM cavity may create potential applications in nanosensors and nanolasers.

We measure the near field distribution of a microwave horn with a resonant atomic probe. The microwave field emitted by a standard microwave horn is investigated utilizing Rydberg electromagnetically inducted transparency (EIT), an all-optical Rydberg detection, in a room temperature caesium vapor cell. The ground 6 S 1 / 2 , excited 6 P 3 / 2 , and Rydberg 56 D 5 / 2 states constitute a three-level system, used as an atomic probe to detect microwave electric fields by analyzing microwave dressed Autler–Townes (AT) splitting. We present a measurement of the electric field distribution of the microwave horn operating at 3.99 GHz in the near field, coupling the transition 56 D 5 / 2 → 57 P 3 / 2 . The microwave dressed AT spectrum reveals information on both the strength and polarization of the field emitted from the microwave horn simultaneously. The measurements are compared with field measurements obtained using a dipole metal probe, and with simulations of the electromagnetic simulated software (EMSS). The atomic probe measurement is in better agreement with the simulations than the metal probe. The deviation from the simulation of measurements taken with the atomic probe is smaller than the metal probe, improving by 1.6 dB. The symmetry of the amplitude distribution of the measured field is studied by comparing the measurements taken on either side of the field maxima.

Abstract In photonics, it is essential to achieve high quality (Q)-factor resonances to enhance light-mater interactions for improving performances of optical devices. Herein, we demonstrate that high Q-factor dual-band Fano resonances can be achieved by using a planar nanohole slab (PNS) based on the excitation of bound states in the continuum (BICs). By shrinking or expanding the tetramerized holes of the superlattice of the PNS, symmetry-protected BICs can be excited and the locations of Fano resonances as well as their Q-factors can be flexibly tuned. Physical mechanisms for the dual-band Fano resonances can be interpreted as the resonant couplings between the electric-toroidal dipoles or the magnetic-toroidal dipoles based on the far-field multiple decompositions and the near-field distributions of the superlattice. The dual-band Fano resonances of the PNS possess polarization independent feature, they can be survived even the geometric parameters of the PNS are significantly altered, making them more suitable for potential applications.

We study theoretically the Fano resonances (FRs) produced by the near-field coupling between the lowest-order (dipolar) sphere plasmon resonance and the dipolar cavity plasmon mode supported by an Ag nanoshell or the hybrid mode in a simple three-layered Ag nanomatryushka constructed by incorporating a solid Ag nanosphere into the center of Ag nanoshell. We find that the linewidth of dipolar cavity plasmon resonance or hybrid mode induced FR is as narrow as 6.8 nm (corresponding to a high Q-factor of ~160 and a long dephasing time of ~200 fs) due to the highly localized feature of the electric-fields. In addition, we attribute the formation mechanisms of typical asymmetrical Fano line profiles in the extinction spectra to the constructive (Fano peak) and the destructive interferences (Fano dip) arising from the symmetric and asymmetric charge distributions between the dipolar sphere and cavity plasmon or hybrid modes. Interestingly, by simply adjusting the structural parameters, the dielectric refractive index required for the strongest FR in the Ag nanomatryushka can be reduced to be as small as 1.4, which largely reduces the restriction on materials, and the positions of FR can also be easily tuned across a broad spectral range. The ultranarrow linewidth, highly tunability together with the huge enhancement of electric fields at the FR may find important applications in sensing, slow light, and plasmon rulers.

Through rigorous electromagnetic simulations, the natural coupling of high-spatial-frequency evanescent waves from the near field to the far field by dielectric microspheres is studied in air. The generation of whispering gallery modes inside the microspheres is shown independently of any resonance. In addition, the conversion mechanism of these evanescent waves into propagating waves is analysed. This latter point leads to key information that allows a better physical understanding of the super-resolution phenomenon in microsphere-assisted microscopy where sub-diffraction-limit revolving power is achieved.

Heterogeneous dimers of Au and Si nanoparticles are expected to exhibit different plasmon properties from that of homogeneous noble metal nanoparticle dimers. It is crucial to unveil the potential applications in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and refractive-index (RI) sensing of the prototype dimer of Au and Si nanospheres. The near-field coupling between the two components within the dimer is revealed to not affect the resonance energy of Si mode in the extinction spectra, but decrease that of Au mode. It also accounts for the plasmon ruler behavior of the fractional shifts of both its dipolar peak wavelength of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and corresponding RI sensitivity factor [Formula: see text], which provide another kind of substitute to estimate the gap distance in between components within the dimer as that of noble metal nanoparticle dimers. Additionally, by tracking the inflection point shift of the corresponding extinction spectra, its [Formula: see text] is revealed to improve 36% than that of traditional one. The maximum [Formula: see text] and SERS enhancement factor [Formula: see text] at 2 nm gap distance are demonstrated to reach 336 nm RIU[Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively. This work paves a new way for developing efficient SERS and RI sensing substrates by combining noble metal and dielectric nanoparticles.

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have attracted much attention due to their infinite Q factor. However, the realization of the analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) by near-field coupling with a dark BIC in metasurfaces remains challenging. Here, we propose and numerically demonstrate the realization of a high-quality factor EIT by the coupling of a bright electric dipole resonance and a dark toroidal dipole BIC in an all-dielectric double-layer metasurface. Thanks to the designed unique one-dimensional (D)–two-dimensional (2D) combination of the double-layer metasurface, the sensitivity of the EIT to the relative displacement between the two layer-structures is greatly reduced. Moreover, several designs for widely tunable EIT are proposed and discussed. We believe the proposed double-layer metasurface opens a new avenue for implementing BIC-based EIT with potential applications in filtering, sensing and other photonic devices.

We numerically investigate the multipolar plasmonic resonances of Aluminum nanoantenna tuned by a monolayer graphene from ultraviolet (UV) to visible regime. It is shown that the absorbance of the plasmonic odd modes (l = 1 and l = 3) of graphene–Al nanoribbon structure is enhanced while the absorption at the plasmonic even modes (l = 2) is suppressed, compared to the pure Al nanoribbon structure. With the presence of the monolayer graphene, a change in the resonance strength of the multipolar plasmonic modes results from the near field interactions of the monolayer graphene with the electric fields of the multipolar plasmonic resonances of the Al resonator. In particular, a clear absorption peak with a high quality (Q)-factor of 27 of the plasmonic third-order mode (l = 3) is realized in the graphene–Al nanoribbon structure. The sensitivity and figure of merit of the plasmonic third-order mode of the proposed Graphene–Al nanoribbon structure can reach 25 nm/RIU and 3, respectively, providing potential applications in optical refractive-index sensing.

AbstractAs light propagates along a waveguide, a fraction of the field can be reflected by Rayleigh scatterers. In high-quality-factor whispering-gallery-mode microresonators, this intrinsic backscattering is primarily caused by either surface or bulk material imperfections. For several types of microresonator-based experiments and applications, minimal backscattering in the cavity is of critical importance, and thus, the ability to suppress backscattering is essential. We demonstrate that the introduction of an additional scatterer into the near field of a high-quality-factor microresonator can coherently suppress the amount of backscattering in the microresonator by more than 30 dB. The method relies on controlling the scatterer position such that the intrinsic and scatterer-induced backpropagating fields destructively interfere. This technique is useful in microresonator applications where backscattering is currently limiting the performance of devices, such as ring-laser gyroscopes and dual frequency combs, which both suffer from injection locking. Moreover, these findings are of interest for integrated photonic circuits in which back reflections could negatively impact the stability of laser sources or other components.
