Recent evidence suggests that physical and mental health are influenced by an intricate interaction between genes and environment. Environmental factors have been shown to modulate neuronal gene expression and function by epigenetic mechanisms. Exposure to these factors including nutrients during sensitive periods of life could program brain development and have long-lasting effects on mental health. Studies have shown that early nutritional intervention that includes methyl-donors improves cognitive functions throughout life. Choline is a micronutrient and a methyl donor that is required for normal brain growth and development. It plays a pivotal role in maintaining structural and functional integrity of cellular membranes. It also regulates cholinergic signaling in the brain via the synthesis of acetylcholine. Via its metabolites, it participates in pathways that regulate methylation of genes related to memory and cognitive functions at different stages of development. Choline-related functions have been dysregulated in some neurodegenerative diseases suggesting choline role in influencing mental health across the lifespan.

Is engaging with music good for your mental health? This question has long been the topic of empirical clinical and nonclinical investigations, with studies indicating positive associations between music engagement and quality of life, reduced depression or anxiety symptoms, and less frequent substance use. However, many earlier investigations were limited by small populations and methodological limitations, and it has also been suggested that aspects of music engagement may even be associated with worse mental health outcomes. The purpose of this scoping review is first to summarize the existing state of music engagement and mental health studies, identifying their strengths and weaknesses. We focus on broad domains of mental health diagnoses including internalizing psychopathology (e.g., depression and anxiety symptoms and diagnoses), externalizing psychopathology (e.g., substance use), and thought disorders (e.g., schizophrenia). Second, we propose a theoretical model to inform future work that describes the importance of simultaneously considering music-mental health associations at the levels of (1) correlated genetic and/or environmental influences versus (bi)directional associations, (2) interactions with genetic risk factors, (3) treatment efficacy, and (4) mediation through brain structure and function. Finally, we describe how recent advances in large-scale data collection, including genetic, neuroimaging, and electronic health record studies, allow for a more rigorous examination of these associations that can also elucidate their neurobiological substrates.

Aims We sought to evaluate early recovery from rotator cuff repair by assessing the correlation between patient resilience and postoperative shoulder pain and function, and physical and mental health. Methods Patients scheduled to undergo arthroscopic rotator cuff repair were prospectively enrolled. Resilience was assessed using the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), pain and function was measured by American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) shoulder scores, and physical and mental health was measured by the Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System Global Health-10 (PROMIS-10). All scores were obtained preoperatively and postoperatively at three- and six months. Spearman correlation coefficient (r) was used to assess the relationship between variables. Results Ninety-eight patients ultimately underwent rotator cuff repair; 76 and 68 patients provided three- and six-month follow-up, respectively. There was no statistically significant correlation between preoperative BRS and three- and six-month ASES. However, there was a statistically significant correlation between preoperative BRS and three-month PROMIS-10 (r = 0.3763, p = 0.009) and concurrent BRS and PROMIS-10 at three months (r = 0.5657, p = 0.0025) and six months (r = 0.5308, p = 0.0025). Discussion Resilience appears to be more predictive of global physical and mental health than shoulder pain and function in early recovery from rotator cuff repair.

Abstract Grand-parental care, an important form of family care in China, However, its health effect on older adults, including their physical and mental health and cognitive function, is often not well understood. In the present study, we investigated the differences in terms of physical and mental health (measured by SF-36 Quality of Life Scale), self-aging attitudes (measured by the Philadelphia Senior Center Morale Scale), and cognitive functions (measured by WAIS, the subscales of Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale) between those who provide grand-parental care and those who do not. Two studies were conducted. The first study examined 150 older adults who provided grandparental care and another 150 older adults who did not. Six months later, we randomly selected 103 older adults to conduct a longitudinal follow-up, of which 53 were older adults who provided grandparental care, and another 50 older adults were those who didn’t. The results of both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies showed that, compared with older adults who did not provide grandparental care, those providing grandparental care has significantly better physical and mental health, more positive self-aging attitudes and even enhanced cognitive functions. Further path analysis showed that loneliness mediated the association between providing grandparental care and enhancement in functions, such that providing grandparental care can reduce loneliness of the older adults, which in turn can improve their physical and mental health and even enhance their cognitive functions. These results shed light on the practical implications of grandparenting in China for the society.

Green infrastructure (GI) has long been known to impact human health, and many academics have used past research to argue for the potential importance of GI as a mechanism for maintaining or improving health within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This scoping review addresses the question: What evidence, if any, have researchers found of a relationship between green infrastructure use and health during the COVID-19 pandemic? Specifically, evaluating the (a) association of GI use with COVID-19 disease outcomes and (b) association of GI use with other health outcomes as impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Twenty-two studies were identified that measured GI use and studied it in relation to health outcomes during the pandemic. The studies were reviewed for the specific measures and types of GI use, level of analysis, specific types of health outcomes, and the conclusions reached with regard to GI use and health. Studies exploring COVID-19-specific health outcomes showed mixed results, while non-COVID health outcomes were more consistently improved through GI use, particularly with regard to improved mental health. While the evidence strongly suggests that GI use has played a protective role in non-COVID-19 physical and mental health during the pandemic, questions remain with regard to possible impacts on COVID transmission and mortality.

Based on the current market current situation of the development of multi-function, with the Human Factors Engineering research as the breakthrough point of the design, the existing defects and problems of the multifunctional sofa as a starting point, and designed a multifunctional sofa, it can not only perform the conversion of multi-function, but also can increase the more whistles and make it better and more conveniently used by modern families, especially in view of the family that the housing area is lesser. It can increase the utilization of the space, and raise interesting interaction between family members, increasing the emotion. With the improvement of living conditions, people begin to pay more attention to their own physical and mental health. As is known to all, sofa is the furniture that can be used to sit and lie. With the development of the society, the sofa also formed the different style and function. This article mainly starts from the multi-function of sofa, through the design of the structure, which can not only make sofa play it own functions, but also can make sofa become a place for children's activities and entertainment. Thus, it can help the family whose children are worried because of the lack of the recreation rooms, which make it not only have function, but also have certain ornamental feature and fashion sense

Physical and mental health problems in older people often co-exist, and may be inter-related. This chapter explores the use of the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) to holistically address the impacts of multiple physical and psychiatric comorbidities on older peoples’ health and function. Older people with mental health problems are particularly vulnerable to frailty and the impacts of polypharmacy. They may present with atypical complaints, are prone to complications, and are at risk of quickly losing their functional abilities. A period of rehabilitation is often necessary to restore functioning after an episode of illness. Multidisciplinary working is essential to offer holistic management of problems commonly seen in older people, including immobility, falls, confusion and incontinence. A focus on person-centred care is particularly important for people living with dementia, and this chapter describes an approach to healthcare that promotes open communication with patients and carers, shared decision-making, and advance care planning.
