The issue of solitary senior citizens dying alone has become serious in advanced countries where the average lifespan of their citizens is continuously extending due to improved health care and diet. Such unattended deaths are considered to be one of the major issues pertaining to the ever-growing number of senior citizens so that many research studies have been conducted to find a solution to mitigate the situation. The framework proposed in this study allows monitoring of electric power consumption patterns of solitary senior citizens. At the same time, a test bed was constructed to estimate the performance of the framework. The results from the test bed experiment revealed that the framework was effective, flexible, and expandable for actual implementation. This framework is the product of these research studies describing individual designs and the method of implementing them for actual application. This research has confirmed that the framework for an extendable solitary senior citizens care system can be designed and implemented at low cost and the operations between system components worked smoothly while interacting flexibly. In particular, the rate of these old people dying alone in poor areas was above normal so that the proposed system would be quite meaningful to society as it helps in monitoring their safety by locating the whereabouts of those people with dementia or checking their daily routines, for example.

Abstract OBJECTIVE Develop and evaluate a low-cost walker with trunk support for senior citizens. METHOD Two-stage descriptive study: development of a walker with trunk support and evaluation with fourth age senior citizens. RESULTS Twenty-three fourth age senior citizens were selected. The evaluated criteria were the immediate influence of the walker on the static stabilometry with baropodometer and the evaluation of gait with accelerometers monitoring time and amplitude of the hip movement. There was a significant decrease in the body oscillation of senior citizens with the use of the developed walker, and there were changes in the joint amplitudes of the hip, but they were not significant. CONCLUSION Using low-cost materials, it was possible to develop and equipment that met resistance and effectiveness requirements. The walker interfered in the balance of the senior citizens, reducing significantly the static body oscillation.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become very popular in the last decade due to some advantages such as strong terrain adaptation, low cost, zero casualties, and so on. One of the most interesting advances in this field is the automation of mission planning (task allocation) and real-time replanning, which are highly useful to increase the autonomy of the vehicle and reduce the operator workload. These automated mission planning and replanning systems require a Human Computer Interface (HCI) that facilitates the visualization and selection of plans that will be executed by the vehicles. In addition, most missions should be assessed before their real-life execution. This paper extends QGroundControl, an open-source simulation environment for flight control of multiple vehicles, by adding a mission designer that permits the operator to build complex missions with tasks and other scenario items; an interface for automated mission planning and replanning, which works as a test bed for different algorithms, and a Decision Support System (DSS) that helps the operator in the selection of the plan. In this work, a complete guide of these systems and some practical use cases are provided

OBJECTIVEThe development of new endovascular technologies and techniques for mechanical thrombectomy in stroke has greatly relied on benchtop simulators. This paper presents an affordable, versatile, and realistic benchtop simulation model for stroke.METHODSA test bed for embolic occlusion of cerebrovascular arteries and mechanical thrombectomy was developed with 3D-printed and commercially available cerebrovascular phantoms, a customized hydraulic system to generate physiological flow rate and pressure, and 2 types of embolus analogs (elastic and fragment-prone) capable of causing embolic occlusions under physiological flow.RESULTSThe test bed was highly versatile and allowed realistic, radiation-free mechanical thrombectomy for stroke due to large-vessel occlusion with rapid exchange of geometries and phantom types. Of the transparent cerebrovascular phantoms tested, the 3D-printed phantom was the easiest to manufacture, the glass model offered the best visibility of the interaction between embolus and thrombectomy device, and the flexible model most accurately mimicked the endovascular system during device navigation. None of the phantoms modeled branches smaller than 1 mm or perforating arteries, and none underwent realistic deformation or luminal collapse from device manipulation or vacuum. The hydraulic system created physiological flow rate and pressure leading to iatrogenic embolization during thrombectomy in all phantoms. Embolus analogs with known fabrication technique, structure, and tensile strength were introduced and consistently occluded the middle cerebral artery bifurcation under physiological flow, and their interaction with the device was accurately visualized.CONCLUSIONSThe test bed presented in this study is a low-cost, comprehensive, realistic, and versatile platform that enabled high-quality analysis of embolus–device interaction in multiple cerebrovascular phantoms and embolus analogs.

Nowadays, Li–CO2 batteries have attracted enormous interests due to their high energy density for integrated energy storage and conversion devices, superiorities of capturing and converting CO2. Nevertheless, the actual application of Li–CO2 batteries is hindered attributed to excessive overpotential and poor lifespan. In the past decades, catalysts have been employed in the Li–CO2 batteries and been demonstrated to reduce the decomposition potential of the as-formed Li2CO3 during charge process with high efficiency. However, as a representative of promising catalysts, the high costs of noble metals limit the further development, which gives rise to the exploration of catalysts with high efficiency and low cost. In this work, we prepared a K+ doped MnO2 nanowires networks with three-dimensional interconnections (3D KMO NWs) catalyst through a simple hydrothermal method. The interconnected 3D nanowires network catalysts could accelerate the Li ions diffusion, CO2 transfer and the decomposition of discharge products Li2CO3. It is found that high content of K+ doping can promote the diffusion of ions, electrons and CO2 in the MnO2 air cathode, and promote the octahedral effect of MnO6, stabilize the structure of MnO2 hosts, and improve the catalytic activity of CO2. Therefore, it shows a high total discharge capacity of 9,043 mAh g−1, a low overpotential of 1.25 V, and a longer cycle performance.

This chapter will treat firstly a summary of the filters synthesis by using Butterworth and chebyshev techniques. After that, a second part will be devoted to the design of planar filters using different techniques; this section will present some examples in bibliography. The aim of this part is to understand the different methods and steps followed to design planar filters, in the same time to discover and to define the different parameters which characterize a filter structure. Therefore, we have chosen some new research studies on low pass filers. The last part will present our contribution in designing planar filter. The first filter structure is a dual bandpass microstrip filter operating for DCS and Wimax applications, this section will introduce the different steps followed to achieve such filter. The second circuit is a novel design low cost microstrip lowpass filter with a cutoff frequency of 2.3 GHz. At the end, we will present a transformation of the microstrip filter to a CPW lowpass filter making it easy for integration with passive and active microwave components.

Purpose This paper aims to interrogate online comments from consumers with dementia and family carers on surveillance technology products used by or for people with dementia. Design/methodology/approach A naturalistic, observational study of qualitative posts (N = 120) by people with dementia (n = 7) and family carers (n = 38) to discussion threads on surveillance technology (ST), hosted by an online dementia support forum in the Netherlands. Kozinet’s (2002) typology was used to describe respondent characteristics, and comments on features of ST products were analysed within a pre-existing framework. Findings Forum users were mainly “tourists” interested in ST, with some “insiders” interested in sharing experiences of ST use. They expressed a lack of trust in information from marketers and providers to the experience of being provided with poor information. Consumer-to-consumer comments on products triangulated with previous face-to-face qualitative studies. Carers prioritised “peace of mind” through location monitoring. In contrast, people with dementia prioritised user-friendliness (simple, with capability and compatible with daily routines). Practical implications Using online discussions of ST products provides a rapid approach to understanding current consumer needs and preferences in the ever-changing world of technology. Originality/value No previous study is known to have explored the views of carers and people with dementia in online discussions about ST.
