Coolant is one of the main factors affecting the overall thermal performance of the intercooler for the gas turbine intercooled cycle. The thermal conductivity of conventional coolants, such as water, is relatively low when compared to solid conducting materials, and therefore can hinder the progress towards achieving a compact and highly effective intercooler. Nanofluids are advanced types of working fluids that contain dispersed nanoparticles in conventional basefluids, and as such possess superior thermal conductivity compared to their counterparts. In this paper, a short review on the effect of different nanofluids on the thermal performance of gas turbines intercoolers is presented for the first time. Firstly, this work reviews the different designs of intercoolers used in gas turbines intercooled cycles. Then, it explains the different types of nanofluids and their fabrication processes. The effective parameters, such as physical stability, thermal conductivity, and viscosity are also highlighted and discussed. Furthermore, the level of enhancement in the performance of intercoolers utilizing nanofluids is demonstrated and evaluated. Lastly, the current challenges and future research directions in this field are provided.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd (KHI) has started a comprehensive program to further improve performance and availability of existing Kawasaki gas turbines. In the program, one of the Kawasaki’s existing gas turbine was selected from the broad product line and various kinds of technology were investigated and adopted to further improve its thermal performance and availability. The new technologies involve novel film cooling of turbine nozzles, advanced and large-scale numerical simulations, new thermal barrier coating. The thermal performance target is combined cycle efficiency of 51.6% and the target ramp rate is 20% load per minute. The program started in 2015 and engine testing has just started. In this paper, details of the program are described, focusing on design procedure.

This paper reviews the modeling techniques and control strategies applied to gas turbine power generation plants. Recent modeling philosophies are discussed and the state-of-the-art feasible strategies for control are shown. Research conducted in the field of modeling, simulation, and control of gas turbine power plants has led to notable advancements in gas turbines’ operation and energy efficiency. Tracking recent achievements and trends that have been made is essential for further development and future research. A comprehensive survey is presented here that covers the outdated attempts toward the up-to-date techniques with emphasis on different issues and turbines’ characteristics. Critical review of the various published methodologies is very useful in showing the importance of this research area in practical and technical terms. The different modeling approaches are classified and each category is individually investigated by reviewing a considerable number of research articles. Then, the main features of each category or approach is reported. The modern multi-variable control strategies that have been published for gas turbines are also reviewed. Moreover, future trends are proposed as recommendations for planned research.

This paper describes the most important factors affecting the industrial gas turbine engine performance deterioration with service time and provides some approximate data on the prediction of the rate of deterioration. Recommendations are made on how to detect and monitor the performance deterioration. Preventative measures, which can be taken to avoid or retard the performance deterioration, are described in some detail.

Many factories in industry such as petrochemical plants, oil refineries and power plants need heat and power to support their process. This demand can be provided by a combined heat and power cycle (CHP) in the factory site. Some factories use gas turbine cycle to provide heat and power. Emissions from gas turbines, produced by burning fossil fuels in the combustion chambers, have important effects on air pollution. This is a significant problem in many developed and developing countries. Parameters such as inlet temperature and pressure ratio are the most effective parameters in gas turbine emission. By selecting an appropriate gas turbine, emission could be reduced to some extent. Further studies indicate that there is an optimum pressure ratio, which minimizes emissions.

It is well known that a vehicular gas turbine needs a heat exchanger to compete in fuel consumption with the piston engine, especially with the diesel. A short review of the theory of heat exchange shows that very small hydraulic diameters must be used to obtain a reasonable heat exchanger volume. This causes a number of problems for the fabrication, engine configuration, flow distribution, etc. These problems are discussed in conjunction with experience gained during the development of a number of heat exchangers (1).

Of all the external factors affecting a gas turbine, inlet pressure and temperature have the greatest impact on performance. The effect of inlet temperature variations is especially pronounced in the new generation of high-efficiency gas turbines typified by the 40 MW GE LM6000. A reduction of 50 F (28 C) in inlet temperature can result in a 30% increase in power and a 4.5% improvement in heat rate. An elevation increase to 5000 feet (1524 meters) above sea level decreases turbine output 17%; conversely supercharging can increase output more than 20%. This paper addresses various means of heating, cooling and supercharging LM6000 inlet air. An economic model is developed and sample cases are cited to illustrate the optimization of gas turbine inlet systems, taking into account site conditions, incremental equipment cost and subsequent performance enhancement.
