Corrosion identification and repair is a vital task in aircraft maintenance to ensure continued structural integrity. Regarding fuselage lap joints, typically, visual inspections are followed by non-destructive methodologies, which are time-consuming. The visual inspection of large areas suffers not only from subjectivity but also from the variable probability of corrosion detection, which is aggravated by the multiple layers used in fuselage construction. In this paper, we propose a methodology for automatic image-based corrosion detection of aircraft structures using deep neural networks. For machine learning, we use a dataset that consists of D-Sight Aircraft Inspection System (DAIS) images from different lap joints of Boeing and Airbus aircrafts. We also employ transfer learning to overcome the shortage of aircraft corrosion images. With precision of over 93%, we demonstrate that our approach detects corrosion with a precision comparable to that of trained operators, aiding to reduce the uncertainties related to operator fatigue or inadequate training. Our results indicate that our methodology can support specialists and engineers in corrosion monitoring in the aerospace industry, potentially contributing to the automation of condition-based maintenance protocols.

Due to the increasing volume of traffic, bridges are exposed to higher loads as it was considered during the planning phase. Therefore, a regular inspection is necessary in order to detect cracks at very early stages. The use of weathering structural steel in bridges, as well as in composite bridge constructions is an alternative to conventional bridges, not only from an economic but also from an ecological point of view, since it is not necessary to apply a corrosion protection layer and renew it during the lifetime of the bridge. Unfortunately, conventional visual inspection or magnetic particle inspection on the weathering steel bridge are hindered by the protective patina and requires development of new test methods. Within the framework of this project, a combined crack detection technique using non-destructive inspection by means of Active Thermography and by Electro-Magnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) were evaluated in laboratory environments and in real conditions on bridge structures made of weathering structural steel.

The inspection system is crucial to ensure the system is always in a good condition. A technique that can be used for inspection system is process tomography. By promising non-destructive approach; various types of process tomography applied in civil, manufacturing and electrical applications. The purpose of this paper is to review the types of process tomography such as ultrasonic tomography, x-ray tomography, optical tomography, electrical resistance tomography, and electrical impedance tomography that had been applied to the inspection system. Variety techniques of inspection based on those sensors briefly discussed in this paper. The result showed that the process tomography expanded tremendously in the inspection system. Finally, a potential future research on the inspection system in the civil application proposed in this paper.

Abstract The approaches of building and methods of using the digital core are currently developing rapidly. The use of these methods makes it possible to obtain petrophysical information by non-destructive methods quickly. Digital rock physics includes two main stages: constructing models and modeling various physical processes on the obtained models. Our work proposes using deep learning methods for mineral and pore space segmentation instead of classical methods such as threshold image processing. Deep neural networks have long been able to show their advantages in many areas of computer vision. This paper proposes and tests methods that help identify different minerals in images from a scanning electron microscope. We used images of rocks of the Achimov formation, which are arkoses, as samples. We tested various deep neural networks such as LinkNet, U-Net, ResUNet, and pix2pix and identified those that performed best in segmentation.

Although the technique of using ultrasound has reached maturity by given the extent of the development of sensors, but the use of the various areas still can be explore. Many types of ultrasonic sensors are still at conventional in use especially for measurement equipment in the industry. With the advancement of signal processing techniques, high-speed computing, and the latest techniques in image formation based Non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, the usage of ultrasound in concrete NDT testing is very extensive because the technique is very simple and should not damage the concrete structure to be investigated. Many of the parameters need to be tested using ultrasound techniques to concrete can be realized. Starting with the initial process for of concrete mixing until the concrete matured to the age of century old. Various tests are available to test a variety of non-destructive of concrete completely, in which there is no damage to the concrete, through those where the concrete surface is damaged a bit, to partially destructive testing, such as core tests and insertion and pull-off test, which surface to be repaired after the test. Testing parameter features that can be evaluated using non-destructive testing and destructive testing of some rather large and include basic parameters such as density, elastic modulus and strength and surface hardness and surface absorption, and reinforcement location, size and distance from the surface. In some cases it is also possible to check the quality of the workmanship and structural integrity of the ability to detect voids, cracks and delamination. A review of NDT using ultrasound on concrete are presented in this paper to highlight the important aspect to consider when one to consider the application and development of ultrasound testing on concrete by considering ultrasound signal capturing, processing and presenting.

This paper presents the experimental results obtained of flexurally loaded wind turbine blade cross section material. All material was extracted from a wind turbine blade box girder and testing was conducted in four point configuration. The aim was to gain an understanding of the structural integrity of this lightweight material as it deforms in flexure. To allow for thorough analysis, digital image correlation (DIC) was used to produce full field strain maps of the deforming specimens. Results highlight the capability of the DIC technique to identify regions of failure, as well as the aspects responsible for them. Overall, the results present a foundation for tests on larger substructure, and eventually integration into manufacturing and maintenance aspects of the industry.
