Many companies, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs), use open source software (OSS) to promote the strategic application of their information technology assets. Several studies have claimed that male and female employees in SMEs differ in their use of various information technologies. This study investigates the factors influencing the perceived usefulness of and satisfaction with OSS among employees at SMEs in various industries, specifically comparing male and female employee perceptions. For this purpose, this study uses a proposed research model to examine the effects of quality factors—such as ease of maintenance, cost advantage, customization, and job relevance—on perceived usefulness of and satisfaction with OSS. Data were collected from 328 randomly selected survey responses of employees in various organizations using OSS. A structural equational model was created using AMOS 22.0 to test the proposed hypotheses in the research model. Results show that all OSS quality factors were significantly related to the perceived usefulness of OSS in both genders, positively affecting satisfaction. Moreover, the perceptions of male and female employees differed in relation to each research model variable. These findings suggest that employees value specific OSS qualities while perceiving its usefulness and their satisfaction.

In the past decade, Open Source (OS) licenses have attracted the interest of many scholars. However, there is still a limited understanding of the license choices made by small and medium enterprises doing business with OS (OS SMEs). The present paper aims at filling this gap. The authors argue that, because of firm specificities, OS SMEs tend to prefer copyleft licenses. Their arguments are corroborated by empirical evidence from a survey on 146 Italian OS SMEs. This evidence documents that OS SMEs are not plagued by the GPL fear theorized by the OS founding fathers. Conversely, these firms use copyleft licenses to more easily in-source knowledge from the community of OS users and developers. At the same time, license choices are influenced by the ideological motivations that OS SMEs inherit from their owner-managers.

Disruptive business models, such as software as a service and open source software, have made Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) packages and related software more accessible for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). However, the consulting required to configure an ERP to meet the specific needs of an organization remains a major financial burden for SMEs. One configuration task which is common to many ERPs is category configuration. With the help of automated category configuration support, managers of small businesses can perform category configuration on their own and reduce part of the consulting cost. This paper presents the design of a generic automation approach for ERP category configuration, its implementation and its application to the open source ERP package ERP5. The approach is based on similarity of example data, automatic vocabulary consolidation through Wikipedia redirects and (meta-) templates. The empirical evaluation through a laboratory experiment with one hundred test persons and a survey supports the validity, effectiveness and utility of the designed artefact.

ABSTRACTThe current adoption of financial technology (fintech) payment by Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) is motivated by the trend of using digital money. The purpose of this study is to test and analyze empirically the factors that influence the intention of SMEs to use fintech payments. This study uses a quantitative method by distributing surveys to 94 MSMEs in the Magelang using convenience sampling technique. The test results with SEM-PLS show that the perceived usefulness and the perception of trust have an effect on attitudes. Risk perception and trust affect the intention to use fintech payment. Meanwhile, for ease of use, perception and risk perception have no effect on attitudes and perceived usefulness. Attitudes have no effect on intentions to use fintech payment. Based on the calculation of the path value, the most powerful factor to influence the intention to use fintech payment is the perception of trust. Keywords: fintech payment, TAM, MSMEABSTRAKAdopsi terkini mengenai pembayaran melalui financial technology (fintech) oleh Usaha Mikro, Kecil dan Menengah (UMKM) dilatarbelakangi oleh tren penggunaan uang digital. This research focuses primarily on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Malaysia, with special reference to Perak State. It is widely recognised that the adoption and use of digital marketing applications change the ways in which organizations conduct their activities and represent a critical business opportunity for MSMEs. This opportunity will only be realised by MSMEs if, and when, digital marketing is applied to their organizations. This, therefore, creates a requirement to understand the factors that influence MSMEs in making the adoption decision. The research related to such factors is scarce, not least because the technologies are relatively new. By using the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, this study, therefore, attempted to understand the predictors/factors influencing the decision making by MSMEs to adopt digital marketing applications. It employed a quantitative approach to meet the research objectives. A survey involving 369 MSMEs in Perak State was conducted to examine empirically the preliminary model. The survey data were analysed using Logistic Regression (LR) technique. Of the factors examined, technological and organizational contexts were found to have a significant influence on MSMEs’ decisions to adopt digital marketing applications. These findings have important implications and value for the research community, MSMEs and policymakers in terms of formulating improved strategies for digital marketing adoption and applications. The resulting research model proposed in this paper/article can improve these stakeholders’understandings on why some MSMEs have chosen to adopt digital marketing technologies, while other MSMEs which face similar market conditions have not.

Many benefits from implementation of e-business solutions are related to network effects which means that there are many interconnected parties utilizing the same or compatible technologies. The large-scale adoption of e-business practices in public sectors and in small and medium enterprises (SMEs)-prevailing economic environments will be successful if appropriate support in the form of education, adequate legislative, directions, and open source applications is provided. This case study describes the adoption of e-business in public sectors and SMEs by using an integrated open source approach called e-modules. E-module is a model which has process properties, data properties, and requirements on technology. Therefore e-module presents a holistic framework for deployment of e-business solutions and such e-module structure mandates an approach which requires reengineering of business processes and adoption of strong standardization that solves interoperability issues. E-module is based on principles of service-oriented architectures with guidelines for introduction into business processes and integration with ERP systems. Such an open source approach enables the spreading of compatible software solutions across any given country, thus, increasing e-business adoption. This paper presents a methodology for defining and building e-modules.

The study examines the intention to continue using mobile banking services among SMEs in Tanzania. The study extended the ECS-IS model by adding three variables: ease-of-use, perceived trust, and attitude to address the existing challenges in continuance usage of mobile banking services. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire from company's owners and managers. A total of 287 responses were used in data analysis. SEM technique was employed to evaluate the measurement and structural models. The study found that satisfaction and attitude have a direct influence on continuance usage of mobile banking among SMEs in Tanzania. Furthermore, confirmation, perceived trust, and perceived usefulness have an indirect effect on continuance usage of mobile banking services among SMEs. The study provides useful insights which could be used by mobile banking service providers to improve banking services delivered through mobile technology. Furthermore, the findings will assist scholars in understanding the antecedents which affect continuance usage of mobile banking services among SMEs.

In spite of the increasing significance of broadband, many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are unaware of or unappreciative of its benefits. This is potentially a problem for governments, Internet Service Providers and other supply side institutions. The current study empirically verifies applicability of an extended IS continuance model controlling for organizational variables based on the Technology-Organization-Environment framework to examine factors influencing broadband post-adoption behavior of SMEs in Singapore. Strong support for the model has been manifested by the results, providing insight into influential factors. Results of the study suggest that perceived usefulness is a strong predictor of users’ continuance intention, followed by satisfaction with broadband usage as a significant but weaker predictor. SMEs in a more competitive business environment and whose key executive possesses greater IT knowledge are more likely to use broadband.
