Construction projects have faced serious schedule delays caused by rework risks. However, it appears that traditional methods are of limited value in developing applicable project schedules. This study presents an analysis on construction projects schedule development under rework scenarios by a novel method named the improved critical chain design structure matrix (CCDSM). Research data are collected from a real estate development project in China. As a result, predictions of project completion duration and probability have been made. A reliable schedule considering information interactions has been developed and visualized. Rework impact areas of activities have been examined to quantitatively record the impact on project duration. To meet different demands, the method generates two more schedules setting different rework buffers. Furthermore, these activities have the potential of causing rework and have been quantified based on the calculation of two criticalities, providing an identification of rework-intensive works that should be payed close importance to, which have not be realized by previous methods. The results proved the feasibility and effectiveness of this method in developing a schedule for construction projects disturbed by rework, helping practitioners adopt measures to avoid rework-caused schedule delays and achieve sustainable development of such projects.

Rework risks have been a major challenge in the construction industry that constantly affects project schedules and threatens on-time project completion. Traditional project scheduling methods are not capable of modeling rework relationships between activities and mitigating the impact of resulting uncertainties during the development of project schedules. To address this challenge, a critical chain design structure matrix (CCDSM) method is proposed in this paper. The CCDSM method aims to develop construction project schedules that are adaptive to rework scenarios and robust against rework risks. The CCDSM method models and displays large-scale rework relationships among activities and introduces a new rework buffer to quantitatively represent the impact of rework instances in project schedules. A max-plus algorithm is adopted in CCDSM to transform complex logic relationships into simple matrix operations, reducing computational load of schedule generation. A case study was conducted to demonstrate the implementation of the CCDSM method and assess its effectiveness in addressing rework risks. The results showed that the CCDSM is a promising tool to generate schedules, which could improve on-time project completion rate and reduce impacts of varying rework scenarios on project execution.

The coastline of Western Pomerania has natural and cultural assets that have promoted the development of tourism, but also require additional measures to ensure the traditional features and characteristics are protected. This is to ensure that new developments conform to a more uniform set of spatial structures which are in line with the original culture. Today, seaside resorts are characterized by a rapid increase in development with a clear trend towards non-physiognomic architectural forms which continually expand and encroach on land closer to the coastline. This results in a blurring of the original concepts that characterized the founding seaside resort. This study evaluates 11 development projects (including a range of hotels, luxury residential buildings and hotel suites) built in 2009–2020 in the coastal area of Western Pomerania. An assessment of architecture-and-landscape integration for each development project was made, using four groups of evaluation criteria: aesthetic, socio-cultural, functional and locational factors. The study methodology included a historical and interpretative study (iconology, iconography, historiography) and an examination of architecture-and-landscape integration using a pre-prepared evaluation form. Each criterion was first assessed using both field surveys and desk research (including the analysis of construction plans and developer materials), and then compared with the original, traditional qualities of the town. This study demonstrates that it is possible to clearly identify the potential negative impact of tourism development on the cultural landscape of seaside resorts, and provides recommendations for future shaping, management and conservation of the landscape.

Risk is a condition caused by uncertainty. Risks will occur on any construction project, including bridge construction projects. Efforts that can be taken to minimize the impact of these risks are to engage in risk management activities. This research was conducted on bridge construction work on toll road procurement project in Pejagan-Pemalang, Pemalang-Batang and Salatiga-Kertasura. The purpose of this research is to analyze the risk of bridge development project in toll road project using Risk Breakdown Structure (RBS) method and then the result as database in discussing risk response strategy. The bridge construction project has 36 risks that are divided into six groups: materials and equipment, design, human resources, finance, management, nature and environmental conditions. Bad weather risks are the higest risk and seasonal risk causing temporary work stoppages. This risk-response strategy is avoidance. Short-term avoidance response strategy is to add shift workers, install tents and add additives in the acceleration of the process of maturation of concrete. The long-term avoidance response strategy is to evaluate and rearrange the work schedule by considering the weather forecast report.

Schedule delays frequently occur in construction projects and bring unexpected consequence. Conducting an elaborate delay analysis and providing early warning are crucial for project performance. In this paper, factors are classified into internal risks and external risks based on the chain effect of schedule delays, and the design structure matrix (DSM) is employed to develop the delay analysis and early warning model. Case study has been performed to prove the effectiveness of the proposed model, finally, sensitivity analysis also draws conclusion the internal risks between tasks should be paid more attention than the external in environment.

Purpose After the drawbacks in the process management of China PE commercial real estate development project are analyzed, it is necessary to introduce a more integrated and advanced tool to solve them. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach A standard process model was proposed first. Based on the model, a coupled activity dependency model was also built by structural tool design structure matrix (DSM), the detailed matrix involving 119 activities and 322 information dependencies. Next, two large processes coupled blocks were generated by the sequencing algorithm and tearing algorithm. Then, the general simulation framework with rework probability and rework effect was introduced to do empirical research for one of the activities blocks due to the merit of solving rework of DSM. Findings These results showed that key activities were rearranged, that information interactive scope for them was optimized and that collaborative organization interface was built. And the expected duration after simulation was 131 days at 90 percent percentile, providing the objective basis of process arrangement to some extent and decreasing the risk of prospective yields during fund period. Originality/value This paper is a qualitative and quantitative practical research for the process management of PE commercial real estate development projects in China based on a real project which has begun construction in 2014.

Rework is a sub-task within equipment development tasks that is revised after initial completion to meet task requirements. Some sub-tasks require multiple rework iterations due to their uncertainty and complexity, or the technology and process needs of the overall task, resulting in inefficient task implementation and resource wastage. Therefore, studying the impact of rework iterations on the duration and cost of development tasks is worthwhile. This study divides rework into foreseeable and hidden types and uses several methods to express and quantify their parameters. The main influencing factors in rework iterations—the uncertainty and complexity of the development task—are quantitatively analyzed. Then, mathematical and mapping models of the dependence between sub-tasks, uncertainty, complexity, and rework parameters are established. The impacts of rework type and rework parameters on the duration and cost of equipment development tasks are analyzed via simulation based on the design structure matrix (DSM). Finally, an example is used to illustrate the influence of different rework types and rework parameters on development tasks’ duration and cost. The results show that the duration and cost of development tasks are greater, their volatility range is wider, and the distribution is more dispersed when both foreseeable and hidden rework are considered.

There has been very little research in the field of Reconfigurable machine Tools (RMTs). None of the past research developed a method to design a set of RMT configurations required to machine a part-family. This thesis presents a novel method to determine the functional specifications of the RMT configurations required to machine a part-family. The method is developed by firstly designing the RMT required to machine a single part. Thereafter, this method is extrapolated to suit the problem of a part-family. To design the RMTs for a single part, firstly, the part is decomposed into manufacturing features. Next, a novel method is developed to cluster the features. Each of these feature-clusters corresponds to a single RMT configuration. Based on the machining requirements of these RMT configurations, the modules are designed. These modules are assembled to form the final RMTs. The method is demonstrated by applying it to an example part.

The authors carried out the analysis of the current state of the Russian investment and construction market, theory and practice of project analysis, which made it possible to determine the specifics of housing construction projects development during the crisis and highly uncertain external and internal factors of its implementation. Urban agglomerations development is a continuous process of transformation of the existing urban environment, where daily living activities are carried out, connected with changing social requirements. It includes various components of the integrated organization of the city’s space: ecological, functional, architectural and artistic, socio-cultural aspects, as well as the organization of population activities. At the same time, taking into account the peculiarities of the city as a whole, urban development, in particular, is today the dominant task in urban planning practice. The mechanism of indicative risk assessment was used to develop the author’s matrix for the processing of specific project risks during the crisis. Values of factor risk premiums are based on it, and they are taken into account when calculating the project efficiency. The use of this methodology makes it possible to identify and assess project risks with minimum resources, correct the parameters of the project’s commercial efficiency and, taking into account the results obtained, draw a conclusion about the feasibility of further project implementation. One should choose a certain classification of environmental risks focusing on the goals and objectives of projects. This allows choosing the right methodology for assessing environmental risks at the stage of information collection and analysis, which in the future will make it possible to make the most complete and balanced decision. The use of the proposed recommendations makes it possible to take into account the impact of commercial, financial, legal, production and management risks during the crisis and, as a result, more accurately calculate the commercial efficiency of a development project.

Construction projects are prone to a number of risks due to their complexity, dynamic nature, capital intensive nature and involvement of many stakeholders. These risks if left unmanaged will negatively influence the completion cost and other primary objectives of construction projects. Numerous studies have been conducted globally to determine the potential risks that negatively impacts construction projects; however, the risks aren’t alike across all the regions and the potential degree of impact may changes with time. This study assessed the impact of risk factors on completion cost of construction projects in Nigeria. Data was collected using structured questionnaires administered to 192 construction practitioners using convenience sampling technique. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) were used to analyse the data. The study found ‘inadequate cost estimate’ (MS = 4.39), ‘risk incurred due to bribery and corruption’ (4.30), ‘increase in prices of materials’ (4.25), ‘increase in cost of labour’’ (4.11), ‘poor cash flow management’ (4.04) ‘mistakes/errors in design’ (4.04) and ‘mistakes during construction’ to be the topmost risk factors that impact on project completion cost. The study concludes that ‘economic’, ‘financial’ and ‘contract administration and project management’ related factors group are those with high impact on project completion cost.
