The plastic industry is facing increasingly growing social and political demands on plastic recycling and reuse. The resource perspective is essential for plastic production companies. Circular economy is one perspective for how industries could deal with a lack of resources today and in the future. However, there are large challenges in the reuse of plastics waste, predominantly due to concern regarding the quality of the waste material. Our paper focuses on the potential of the exchange of plastic material waste between companies in the production process before it enters into the recycling loop. In this study our aim is to investigate if an on-line marketplace is relevant for the plastic industry for this exchange, the market potential and the potential business model and requirements of the marketplace. Through interviews and benchmarking with five platform providers and two plastic manufacturing companies, we collected information on the business models of international digital platforms and plastic manufacturers concerning the exchange of reusable materials between companies. We also collected data through a survey sent out to plastic manufacturers via two industry organizations in Sweden. This paper will present the results from the study and conclude with a description of draft requirements with particular focus on direct reuse of regrind material, and a potential business model for the on-line marketplace that should be run on a commercial basis. This study shows that there are opportunities for the plastic industry to be at the forefront of a circular initiative that could also be utilized by other industries with adjustments to reflect the specific requirements of each industry.

The purpose of this article is to describe the key aspects of the transformation of outdated business models of private healthcare institutions in Ukraine. The article supports the point that existing business models of private medical institutions could be improved based on assessing the quality of services provided and creating a unique value proposition using modern marketing tools for the development of business models. On the basis of the economically substantiated business model development strategy of «MEDICOM Anti-Aging Clinic», theoretical conclusions have been empirically confirmed and their applied significance has been proved.


This chapter reviews the following key aspects of platform research: platform strategy, dynamic capabilities, and business models. The main platform typologies and basic definitions are described first. It provides a brief summary of the literature relating to arguing platform strategy, platform life cycle, platform building blocks, and business models. A platform strategy categorization taxonomy and platform practical strategies of preventing platform disintermediation are developed. The main types of platform business models are introduced. The multi-sided platform business model pattern (MSP BMP) is designed. MSP BMP is used as a basic conceptual framework and knowledge management tool for describing, analyzing, and interpreting non-price instruments used by digital platforms, especially platform intermediaries.

Data marketplaces can fulfil a key role in realizing the data economy by enabling the commercial trading of data between organizations. Although data marketplace research is a quickly evolving domain, there is a lack of understanding about data marketplace business models. As data marketplaces are vastly different, a taxonomy of data marketplace business models is developed in this study. A standard taxonomy development method is followed to develop the taxonomy. The final taxonomy comprises of 4 meta-dimensions, 17 business model dimensions and 59 business model characteristics. The taxonomy can be used to classify data marketplace business models and sheds light on how data marketplaces are a unique type of digital platforms. The results of this research provide a basis for theorizing in this rapidly evolving domain that is quickly becoming important.

Business Model Canvas (BMC) is one of the business models that describes how a company creates, delivers and records the value of the product or service it produces. The background of this research is to identify the business model used by chemical manufacturing companies in creating value for their customers. The aim of this study is to find out how the implementation of BMC in chemical manufacturing companies in creating value and provide advice and recommendations on the business models used. Key activities and key resources are important elements in a chemical company's business model, since the production process is the main activity in the manufacture of products, which are then sold and distributed to customers


Cities are the engines of growth for a nation. Smart technologies can help address the urban challenges and improve quality of life, economic opportunity, and liveability for citizens. Cities benefit from a transparent overview of best practice solutions to become smarter and from identifying best-suited solution providers. Companies that make cities smarter benefit from becoming more visible to cities around the globe with their newly developed or proven solutions. Innovative business models help accelerate the adoption of smart technologies. Various funding mechanisms have been used by cities to develop smart city projects. However, it has been revealed that the literature does not provide enough thoughts on these concepts. This paper provides an insight to the concept of innovative business models and the adoption of these in smart cities. Further the paper advances the understanding on the evolving business models and city procurement policies that could be used to accelerate smart city development. The paper seeks to address the question: What are the challenges faced by organisations and smart cities to develop a successful innovative business model? Cities have designed well defined strategies and are in the process of developing strategies for smart city. The paper address the challenges and functions of an innovative business model for development of smart cities.

Urgency of the research. In the crisis conditions of quarantine, business modelling has become the subject of scientific debate and demand from businesses. Applying conservative approaches to business models has caused significant financial losses and depreciation of business value. Thus, value models that reflect the assessment of various business processes in monetary terms are becoming especially relevant. Therefore, managers understand the synergetic effect of the procedural approach to business processes construction and the component contribution of business processes in achieving the goals of the enterprise. The research purpose is the improving of the scientific principles and development of a methodical approach to improvement of scientific bases and the formation of a business model from a value point of view, which has practical significance for the formation of a vision of business development. Uninvestigated parts of general matters defining. In the conditions of social crisis and fluctuations, many tools of business development and its business modelling have lost their relevance. Businesses need to find the latest approaches to business structuring and development. Research methodology. The basis of the study is a systematic analysis and a comprehensive approach to the formation of methods for building a cost-effective business model of the enterprise. Analysis and synthesis were used to characterize approaches to business modelling and determine their features, and the dialectical method was used to formulate the essence of the category “business model”. Using statistical methods allowed to get trends in the business and its modelling analysed. For a complex representation of the model, a graphical method was used (for visualization of the model) and economic mathematical modelling for the representation of the model, which has practical significance in the trends of digitalization of business processes. Results. The article substantiates that the formation of a value business model is a prerequisite for a radical rethinking of business approaches, creating the potential for its development and a starting point for innovation and change. After analysing different approaches to business modelling and to estimating the value of business on the basis of a systematic approach, a value business model is proposed, which consists of a value rhombus and a square of potential. This model includes all business processes of the enterprise and assesses the potential of business development. The mathematical expression of the components of the model that corresponds to the process approach and cost evaluation and can serve as a tool for forming a software product is proposed. The advantages of applying such a model in practice are substantiated. Practical implications. The business model and clear well-defined mechanisms of its formation are a necessary requisition for business development. Scientists are often inclined to think that a business model is a complex mathematical or econometric expression. However, in practice, it is the graphic visualization of the business structure that is important in terms of forming a deep understanding of business as a system and areas for improving its components. Value/originality. The proposed approach to business modelling can be used in the following areas: evaluation of business efficiency as an individual enterprise, and in comparison as well; assessment of investment attractiveness of the business; assessment of business potential and directions of its development; analysis of the market potential of the enterprise; strategic analysis of business development and determination of its competitive advantage; a basis for the software or systems of the Workflow class development.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study how digital business models evolve when entrepreneurs move to new digital platforms and how this evolution is related to effectuation and causation logics. Design/methodology/approach This study applies a multiple case study approach to investigate how digital business models change in small, Japanese high-tech firms providing their innovations through different digital platforms. To investigate digital business models, this study considers the elements that comprise general business models. The case firms were selected based on size, products and transitions from physical to various digital platforms. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the key decision-makers from the case firms. Findings The findings show that through digital transformation, the case firms’ digital business models evolved by following effectuation logic as well as causal logic. All the firms employed causal logic when moving to new platforms, among other actions. The case firms used effectual logic with success for product development and adjustments to their network. Especially firms providing video games relied on effectuation for high impact products. Effectual logic did not play a role at all in changes to value delivery and had only little impact on revenue structures. Originality/value This research helps understand how digitalization of platforms and subsequent moves to newer digital platforms improve a firm by changing the business model elements through effectuation and causation logics. This research extends the understanding of digital business model transformation to a more granular level, business model elements.

It is very common today that many business models are based on offering on-line services. Profitability and efficiency of this business model relies on a secure and undisturbed Internet infrastructure. Unfortunately, services offered on Internet infrastructure, being an Open and yet untrusted network, are very often targets of Denial-of-Service and Distributed Denial-of-Service attacks. These attacks are today a serious problem for on-line services offered by many business models. Preventing or minimizing DoS and DDoS is a difficult task which could serve to many on-line service offering business models to provide quality services to their clients. The main objective of this chapter is to present the Client Puzzle mechanism as a new method designed to defend business networks and their on-line services from these attacks. By using a client puzzle protocol on the IP level, the client is forced to solve a cryptographic puzzle before it can request any operation from a server, thus creating computational efforts and delays to illegitimate attackers and minimizing their attack effects on services. In this chapter, the authors show that chained puzzle protocol reduces the network and insfrastructure overhead because the servers do not have to generate puzzles on a per-packet basis. In addition, the chapter analyzes the effectiveness and some limitations of chained puzzles method with regards to minimizing DDoS attacks and outlines a general approach for addressing the identified limitations. At the last part, the authors propose a solution based on the general principle that under attack legitimate clients should be willing to experience some degradation in their performance in order to obtain the requested service.

Purpose This paper aims to analyze the business model innovation in medium and large Brazilian manufacturing companies located in Rio do Sul State. Design/methodology/approach A holistic multiple case study in five companies was developed. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed according to the content analysis technique. Findings The main motivation to business model innovation was the innovation in products and services, while the difficulties were the factors relating to the cost. The most common practice among cases was innovation in value proposition and the most widely used method was learning-by-searching. While part of the theory was demonstrated in the case studies, new motivations and practices were identified. The investigation of the learning process on business models’ innovation is pioneered in this study. Further studies on this subject are required. Originality/value New business models are likely to provide new opportunities to better address customer needs, generating differentiating itself from its competitors. It is a subject little investigated in the international context, and there are no studies to investigate the experience of Brazilian companies.

This case focuses on how social entrepreneurs use business model thinking to create successful business models for sustainable social enterprise. It explores how the Hextol Foundation, an independent charitable company whose aim is to improve the quality of life of young people who are learning disabled, or who have mental ill health, uses business model thinking as part of a decision-making process to develop a sustainable social enterprise business model. The case provides a detailed account of the unique challenges presented to entrepreneurs who are driven by social purpose rather than solely by the need to generate a profit. The case is also useful in highlighting how business model thinking is used by entrepreneurs to identify, evaluate and pursue a range of strategic options. It advances our understanding of business model thinking and business model innovation in the context of a social enterprise.
