The United Nations Agenda for 2030 lists Sustainable Development Goals which include quality education, which we have pursued in the Undergraduate Final Project of the Environmental Sciences Degree at the University of Granada (Spain). This entailed designing sustainable cities, including the management of natural hazards. We created an innovative didactic model using gamification, in which the student adopted the researcher role using the computer game Cities: Skylines as a simulation tool. Using a design-based method, we conducted a qualitative single-case study in which the professor observed the process and guided the student’s self-learning in a fun way. Under this guidance, the student made decisions alone in order to simulate a sustainable city, and afterwards to analyse the findings. Three variables were considered in order to evaluate the results concerning the quality of the student’s learning: (1) the experiment using the game, (2) motivation, and (3) the skills acquired. In all three, the student earned a high score. Of the 12 skills established as the specific goals of the teaching plan, the student reached a very high level in 10, and a high level in two, implying the overall success of the learning process. The study achieved its main goal, as an innovative didactic methodology was established based on student’s research, using gamification and simulation with a technological tool. Moreover, the case study gave positive results, with the student proving capable of developing scientific and professional competencies at an optimal level.

Environmental degradation and socioeconomic dilemma continue to affect agricultural productivity in the Niger Delta of Nigeria. Several works of literature confirm the high level of pollution and contamination of land and water as a result of over 50 years of oil production in the region. The effects of environmental pollution continue to aggravate the hardship of the local people, which generates development friction, threaten oil operation, and mutually contrive relational efforts, by so invoking mistrust between oil companies and the host communities. Sustainability programs of oil companies often provide the channel to engage and promote community relations from which projects are conceived and executed. Despite sustainability efforts of oil companies, the region continues to experience oil spills and environmental degradation.Hence, the current research explores the sustainability efforts of a multinational oil company to establish whether the company’s leadership makes environmental considerations and to identify possible corrections that could be adopted to achieve sustainable value. For this purpose, the paper employed a single case study approach using open-ended interview sessions in collecting data. Research data were gathered from a sample of 20 experienced sustainability practitioners of the oil company, partnering nonprofit organizations, and community leaders through face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Data were segmented and categorized. The data analysis process revealed several themes regarding the challenges and shortfalls of sustainability programs in the region. The evidence found suggests that implementing a transparent and inclusive sustainability management system is essential to enable a systems view in contemplating sustainability programs. In so doing, oil MNCs leaders could enable effective environmental consideration in their sustainability programs to help reinvigorate productive agriculture and ensure continuing oil operation.

For any business to operate effectively, a governance framework that operates at the relevant maturity level is required. An organisational governance maturity framework is a tool that leadership can use to determine governance maturity. This study aims to determine whether the organisational governance maturity framework (developed by Wilkinson) can be applied to the selected retail industry organisation to assess the maturity of the organisation’s governance, limited to the ‘leadership’ attribute. Firstly, a high-level literature review on ethical leadership, ethical decision-making, ethical foundation and culture (‘tone at the top’), and organisational governance and maturity was conducted. Secondly, a Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) listed South African-based company was selected for the empirical part of the study using a single case study research design. The empirical results confirmed that the organisational governance maturity framework can be used to determine the maturity level of organisational governance for the selected attribute of ‘leadership’.

In the paper, the development of an integrated experimental-numerical case study for a university course of Fluid Dynamic Design of Turbomachinery (FDDT) is presented. Since 2004, a FDDT course has been held at the Engineering Department of the University of Ferrara (Italy). The basic idea of the FDDT course is to introduce the basic and advanced ideas beyond the design of turbomachinery supported by the use of integrated three-dimensional tools. Within the course, great effort has been devoted to practical experience, both numerical and experimental. In particular, the study of a simple but exhaustive geometry may represent a good exercise where students can practically and effectively train. For this reason, during the FDDT course, a centrifugal pump has been studied both experimentally and numerically as a test geometry. In the paper, the phases necessary to carry out this kind of project are presented and discussed.

In 2011, the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011–2020. Among the categories or “pillars” of activities, is the improvement of road safety for infrastructures. Furthermore, this plan is aligned by the UN Sustainable Development Goals that included even traffic safety. In this regard, this study estimates safety improvements achieved by converting a standard roundabout into an egg turbo roundabout. In particular, turbo roundabouts have become very popular in Northern Europe for both their safety and their capacity. Many studies have shown these advantages thanks to their features: preventive separation of entering flows, limited lane changing and low speeds due to curbs. Given the absence of existing turbo roundabouts in Italy, this research studied and compared a “virtual” roundabout with spiraling circular carriageways to an existing multi-lane roundabout in order to assess its significant reduction in terms of potential collisions. This study relied on traffic conflicts in micro-simulation by using VISSIM software and then Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM). The research is based on the traffic process observed at a standard roundabout in Cosenza (Italy) marked by a high level of congestion and safety problems. Speeds, critical gaps, queue lengths, and floating car data, obtained from video observations, have been used as input data for the calibration procedure of the first scenario (case study roundabout). Then, the turbo roundabout solution was built and simulated by using the previously derived parameters. Finally, the two roundabout scenarios were compared in terms of spatial distribution of the potential conflicts determined by SSAM. The results could help to measure the performance and safety impact of these two roundabout configurations.

The concept of sustainopreneurship demands entrepreneurial actions to promote sustainable development goals and principles in business activities. The study understands the necessity of an academic curriculum that aids the business gradates to enhance their entrepreneurial skills in the light of sustainopreneurship development concepts. Key objective of the study is to propose an action-oriented model of sustainopreneurship that may enrich the existing curriculum of entrepreneurship development courses taught at the university level. The current study is based on classroom experiences at Southern University Bangladesh. The paper tries to offer a potential model of embedding sustainopreneurship in the entrepreneurship development curriculum that opens the possibility in attaining the goals of the said concept. The methodology of the study is based on qualitative research conducted through exploratory analysis. Results of the study are based on observation and the opinions of the direct stakeholders specially the students, faculties, and the management of the university.

Abstract The current case study used cognitive behaviour treatment (CBT) for the management of a 35-year-old, married man who presented with complaint of compulsive hoarding. The complaint of compulsive hoarding (excessive acquisition, difficulty in discarding saved material and cluttering) was accompanied by feeling of anger, sad mood, low confidence, decreased sleep and appetite, poor problem solving ability, indecisiveness and interpersonal conflicts. The study was approved by the institutional research committee (Departmental Doctoral Programme Committee) and followed by the university research committee (Advance Studies and Review Board) as academic requirement for the duration of 2013-2020. A system that is used for time-clocking, creating an all-inclusive electronic record of the process involved in how employees logs in and out of work on working days are referred to as a clocking system. The system has an additional feature of calculating an accurate payroll system, which in turn, can lead to a precise amount the company spent on labour. In essence, an employee clocking system is a process of monitoring the attendance, presence and truancy of employees in a work environment. In this project, the University of Energy and Natural Resources was used as a case study. The existing method of recording the presence of staff to work is by a manual process where employees record their attendance on a paper. The challenge of the current employee attendance system is the difficulty in tracing old records, safekeeping, lack of confidentiality and the chances of other employees logging in for their truant colleagues. This paper sought to introduce a biometric employee clocking system to help overcome the high level of truancy in workplaces. The results of the experiment we conducted indicate a high accuracy in our system with TAR value of 99.7%. This accuracy rate is much better than the results other researchers obtained. The excellent accuracy implies that employees will have difficulty to check-in or out for their truant colleagues. The high accuracy results will help improved security of attendance, improved employee performance, ensures fast and easy retrieval of data, easy monitoring of staff, and prevent impersonation in the attendance logs.

The article reveals the experience of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Russian universities based on the case study of North-Eastern Federal University (NEFU). The article presents a comparative analysis of strategic programs to manage the development of universities in the North of Russia and the northern countries of Europe and America in the context of global changes and growing uncertainty of the environment. It shows NEFU’s groundwork for the implementation of the sustainable development model of the northern territories and justifies the key principles and the directions of change in the academic and innovative activities of the university related to the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
