While universal discrete element code (UDEC) is widely used for understanding the mechanism of large-scale strata movement and the effects of mining subsidence on the environment, the fundamental knowledge of how to set vertical joint spacing (VJS) in UDEC is still not fully understood. To address the knowledge gap, we first present a novel VJS calculation method, then conduct UDEC experiments, and finally compare the predictions of UDEC models with field subsidence observation. The results suggest the following: (1) when compared to the conventional VJS setting (1× to 3× bed thickness), the maximum surface subsidence (MSS) prediction via UDEC models based on our proposed VJS setting method is closer to field observation; (2) a smaller but varying VJS setting can also have the effect of a larger VJS setting; and (3) with the increase in VJS, MSS first drops, then rises, and reaches the minimum when VJS is set at approximately 7× bed thickness. This paper provides an explanation of the VJS setting in UDEC and establishes a bridge between the KS theory and VJS, which is helpful for the sustainable development of such an UDEC modeling strategy and for a better understanding of the influences of mining subsidence on the environment in mining-affected areas.

Reflection about the role of community engagement and corporate social investment in Brazil, associated with the presence of a large economic enterprise, is the major stimulus of this chapter. It seeks to present how cross-sector governance can contribute to the social development of a city and how this process can be led by a partnership comprising a corporate foundation, government, and civil society. The concept of the public–private social partnership (PPSP) is explored: a strategy for building a series of inter-sectoral alliances aimed at promoting the sustainable development of territories where the company has large-scale enterprises, through joint efforts towards integrated long-term strategic planning, around a common agenda. To this end, the case of Canaã dos Carajás is introduced, a municipality in the State of Pará, in the Amazon region, where large-scale mining investment is being carried out by the mining company Vale SA.

The assessment of ecological environment during the large-scale development of islands is a major topic in the study of current coastal islands. Choosing the appropriate assessment method to evaluate the suitability of carrying capacity of islands and making relevant suggestions are significant to the sustainable development of islands. Ecological footprint method is used to analyze the ecological carrying capacity of Pingtan Island (PI) from 2005 to 2016 for promoting the coordinated rational development and construction and ecological environment of the island. Although PI is in rapid urban development and construction, the island maintains secure and stable ecological conditions. PI is used as a research case to analyze the sustainable development of the ecological environment through the carrying capacity of the island ecosystem.

Action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) needs to become real and impactful, taking a “whole systems” perspective on levers for systems change. This article reviews what we have learned over the past century about the large-scale outcome of health inequality, and what we know about the behaviour of complex social systems. This combined knowledge provides lessons on the nature of inequality and what effective action on our big goals, like the SDGs, might look like. It argues that economic theories and positivist social theories which have dominated the last 150 years have largely excluded the nature of human connections to each other, and the environment. This exclusion of intimacy has legitimatised arguments that only value-free economic processes matter for macro human systems, and only abstract measurement constitutes valuable social science. Theories of complex systems provide an alternative perspective. One where health inequality is viewed as emergent, and causes are systemic and compounding. Action therefore needs to be intensely local, with power relationships key to transformation. This requires conscious and difficult intervention on the intolerable accumulation of resources; improved reciprocity between social groups; and reversal of system flows, which at present ebb away from the local and those already disadvantaged.

<p>Motivated by the establishment of a Ferry-Free E39 coastal highway route, crack width calculation methods for design of large-scale concrete structures are discussed. It is argued that the current semi-empirical formulas recommended by Eurocode 2 is inconsistent and overly conservative for cross sections with large bar diameters and covers. A suggestion to formulating a more consistent crack width calculation method is given.</p>

Abstract A simple scheme to model and mesh stiffened shell-like structures is presented. Combined with a high-order finite/infinite element based infrastructure, it enables the solution of complex structural acoustics problems at high wave numbers. Numerical examples are presented to show the applicability of the method at high wave-numbers.

The purpose of the article is to present the activities carried out by the Warsaw School of Economics, including the Department of Economics and Finance of the Local Government, aimed at both activities aimed at the diversified development of the broader sense - the activities of the Universities in this respect and in the strict sense, i.e. the activities of one of the departments, i.e. the Department of Economics and Finance of the Local Government within research and development at the local government level. The activities in the area of sustainable development include the membership to the Sustainable Development Goals Accord, the seat of the Polish branch of OIKOS International . On the other hand, activities in the field of sustainable development strictly mean activities in the field of research and development as well as conducting lectures and postgraduate studies in the field of sustainable development in the broad sense of the word. These activities are carried out by the mentioned department. The activities are therefore implemented on a large scale in order to increase the promotion of the idea of sustainable development in order to support the idea of sustainable development at every possible level, from national to local.

Coworking space is a recent manifestation of the emerging sharing economy. This is largely due to two core driving forces: a new working style in the creative and knowledge economies, and the sharing economy, which promotes resource usage efficiency. This paper develops an analytical framework for the spatial perspectives on coworking spaces according to the core driving forces at both the urban and architectural levels, followed by empirical studies on practices related to coworking space in Beijing. The results indicate that at the city scale, coworking spaces tend to aggregate in clusters of large-scale creative and knowledge enterprises in mixed-use and high-density areas, and underutilized spaces become the key pillar. In the architectural dimension, coworking spaces tend to coexist with conventional office spaces or coliving apartments. Empirical studies in Beijing also show that coworking spaces have promoted the sustainable development of the city by renewing existing low-profit urban spaces and utilizing architectural spaces more efficiently. However, the unstable lease market of small-scale businesses, as well as marginal financial models, which pro fit from rental differences, challenge the survival of coworking spaces. In pursuit of capital, coworking spaces have tended to overexpand.

Exhausted or abandoned underground longwall mining may lead to long-term residual subsidence on surface land, which can cause some problems when the mined-out land is used for construction, land reclamation and ecological reconstruction. Thus, it is important to assess the stability and suitability of the land with a consideration of residual surface subsidence. Assuming a linear monotonic decrease in the annual residual surface subsidence, the limit of the sum of the annual residual subsidence factor, and continuity between surface subsidence in the last year of the weakening period and the residual surface subsidence in the first year, we establish a model to calculate the duration of residual subsidence and the annual residual surface subsidence factor caused by abandoned longwall coal mining. The duration of residual surface subsidence increases with the increase in mining thickness as well as the factor of extreme residual subsidence. The proposed method can quantitatively calculate the annual residual subsidence, the accumulative residual subsidence, and the potential future accumulative residual subsidence. This approach can be used to reasonably evaluate the stability and suitability of old mining subsidence areas and will be beneficial for the design of mining subsidence land reclamation and ecological reconstruction.

A number of processes in the ocean must be modeled properly in order to produce valid estimates of oceanic heat transport, sea-surface temperature, and sea-ice extent in climate studies. These include: wind-driven turbulent mixing and water transport in the surface layer, internal vertical mixing due to several small-scale mechanisms, horizontal and vertical exchanges by mesoscale eddies, mixing along isopycnals, large-scale transport by currents, deep convection in polar regions, and boundary exchanges with atmosphere, ice, and land. Techniques to model these processes are described. Prospects are given for parameterizing the effects of phenomena that cannot be resolved in climate studies, particularly mesoscale eddies. Past simulations of the ocean in climate studies are reviewed. A modeling strategy is outlined for an improved treatment of the ocean, consistent with the computational power soon to be available.
