This study examines an innovative Coastal Reservoir (CR) technique as a feasible solution for flood adaptation and mitigation in the Brisbane River Estuary (BRE), Australia, which is vulnerable to coastal flooding. The study analysed the operation of a CR by using the MIKE 21 hydrodynamic modelling package. The 2D hydrodynamic model was calibrated and validated for the 2013 and 2011 flood events respectively, with a Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (Ens) between 0.87 to 0.97 at all gauges. River right branch widening and dredging produced a 0.16 m reduction in water level at the Brisbane city gauge. The results show that by suitable gate operation of CR, the 2011 flood normal observed level of 4.46 m, with reference to the Australian Height Datum (AHD) at Brisbane city, could have been reduced to 3.88 m AHD, while under the improved management operation of the Wivenhoe Dam, the flood level could be lowered to 4 m AHD at Brisbane city, which could have been reduced with CR to 2.87 m AHD with an overall water level reduction below the maximum flood level. The results demonstrated that the innovative use of a CR could considerably decrease the overall flood peak and lessen flood severity in the coastal city of Brisbane.

Abstract. As a tide propagates into the estuary, river discharge affects tidal damping, primarily via a friction term, attenuating tidal motion by increasing the quadratic velocity in the numerator, while reducing the effective friction by increasing the water depth in the denominator. For the first time, we demonstrate a third effect of river discharge that may lead to the weakening of the channel convergence (i.e. landward reduction of channel width and/or depth). In this study, monthly averaged tidal water levels (2003–2014) at six gauging stations along the Yangtze River estuary are used to understand the seasonal behaviour of tidal damping and residual water level slope. Observations show that there is a critical value of river discharge, beyond which the tidal damping is reduced with increasing river discharge. This phenomenon is clearly observed in the upstream part of the Yangtze River estuary (between the Maanshan and Wuhu reaches), which suggests an important cumulative effect of residual water level on tide–river dynamics. To understand the underlying mechanism, an analytical model has been used to quantify the seasonal behaviour of tide–river dynamics and the corresponding residual water level slope under various external forcing conditions. It is shown that a critical position along the estuary is where there is maximum tidal damping (approximately corresponding to a maximum residual water level slope), upstream of which tidal damping is reduced in the landward direction. Moreover, contrary to the common assumption that larger river discharge leads to heavier damping, we demonstrate that beyond a critical value tidal damping is slightly reduced with increasing river discharge, owing to the cumulative effect of the residual water level on the effective friction and channel convergence. Our contribution describes the seasonal patterns of tide–river dynamics in detail, which will, hopefully, enhance our understanding of the nonlinear tide–river interplay and guide effective and sustainable water management in the Yangtze River estuary and other estuaries with substantial freshwater discharge.

Estuary of the river that leads to the reservoir has characteristics include: relatively flat, there is a change in the increase of wet cross-sectional area and backwater. The backwater will cause the flow velocity to be reduced, so that the grains of sediment with a certain diameter carried by the flow will settle in the estuary of the river. The purpose of this research is to know the distribution and sedimentation pattern at the river estuary that leads to the reservoir with the change of water level in the reservoir storage, so the solution can be found to remove / reduce sediment before entering the reservoir. The method used is the experimental, by making the physical model of the river estuary leading to the reservoir. This study expects a solution to reduce sedimentation, so that sedimentation can be removed / minimized before entering the reservoir. This research tries to apply bypass channel to reduce the sedimentation at the river estuary. Bypass channels can be applied to overcome sedimentation at the river estuary, but in order for the sediment to be removed optimally, it is necessary to modify the mouth of bypass channel and channel angle.

Abstract: Belawan River Basin is one of the watershed, which currently change the land use because of the increasing population and industrial development. Rainfall with high intensity can cause rapid runoff, causing flood around the plains of the river cross section. The purpose of this research is to determine the flood water level of Belawan Watershed and flood discharge return period. Scope of activity in this research is analyzing daily rainfall Belawan watershed with the flood-discharge return period. Scope of activity in this research is analyzing maximum daily rainfall Belawan Watershed, and simulating flood water level with HECRAS. The result of the study shows that the potency of Belawan watershed flood water level is caused by flood discharge at 25 to 100 years especially in the middle to downstream of river cross section that is between 0.7 m and 3.3 m. Keywords: Flood Discharge, Flood Level, Belawan Watershed, Software HECRAS.

After Three Gorges Reservoir building up, the natural river course and the near hillside inside the backwater region are inundated to form a fairly wide man-made lake which affects the hydrological characteristics and floodwater transmission to different degrees. When the reservoir impound to high water level, the conflux time is obviously shortened, the flood-peak discharge increase, and the peak type became sharper. The change of runoff yield and concentration makes the forecast scheme unable to be applied well. Based on the practice of Three Gorges Reservoir operation, the rainfall-runoff characteristics of the backwater region under the condition of high water level are analysed and summarized, then a set of unit hydrographs suitable for rainfall-runoff calculation are recalibrated, which has great reference value for hydrological forecasting of Three Gorges region.

Based on the Comprehensive Flood Management Plan (CFMP), one of the flood control alternatives in the Ciliwung Watershed is using the dry dam construction. Construction of Ciawi dam and Sukamahi dam who are located in Bogor District, are expected to decrease the flood peak and increasing the time concentration in order to reduce the impact caused by a flood in DKI Jakarta due to Ciliwung River. With the construction of Ciawi dam and Sukamahi dam, it is necessary to conduct a research on the effect of both dams construction in Katulampa Weir, one of monitoring point dams on the DKI Jakarta Flood Early Warning System. Hydrological analysis with Win-TR 20 and HEC-RAS was conducted to identify the changes in the flood level of Flood Early Warning System in DKI Jakarta with and without both dams are available. The results of this study indicate that the peak floods decreased by around 2.5% after the implementation of Ciawi dam and Sukamahi dams. The impacts of this reduction will not affect the Flood Early Warning System level at Katulampa Weir significantly.
