Use of a transient SEA for calculation of structure-borne interior noise in trains from an induction motor controlled by multi-mode PWM

This paper presents a transient SEA (Statistical Energy Analysis) approach to predict the structure-borne interior noise in trains from an induction motor controlled by multi-mode PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). Most of the induction motors installed in trains are controlled by multi-mode PWM, which switches between asynchronous and synchronous modes according to the speed to reduce switching losses. This control causes the electromagnetic forces of PWM harmonics to change, resulting in a transient interior noise depending on the vehicle's speed. In this paper, we model the bogie using FEM to calculate the transmission of the electromagnetic forces to the vehicle body through traction bars and dampers. Next, we model the vehicle body using a transient SEA to calculate transient energy in a 1/3 octave band excited by the transmitted electromagnetic forces. Finally, we restore the waveform of interior noise by applying the appropriate phase to the transient energy to auralize the analysis result. We obtained reasonable agreement by comparing the analysis results of the interior noise with the actual measurements.

SVPWM (Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation) technique is type of traditional PWM method that efficiently utilizes its dc link voltage and generates high voltage pulses with low harmonic content and high modulation index. VSI (Voltage Source Inverter) with SVPWM generates adjustable voltage and frequency signals for VSDs (Variable Speed Drives). This research work presents the simplified SVPWM technique for controlling the speed and torque of induction motor. The performance of developed SVPWM technique is analyzed in terms of its switching losses and harmonic content and compared with SPWM (Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation). Mathematical modeling for induction motor control through two-level VSI with SVPWM and SPWM is presented. The voltage and current TDHs (Total Harmonic Distortions) of the drive with SVPWM technique are 73.23 and 63.3% respectively as compared to 101.99 and 77.89% with SPWM technique. Similarly, the switching losses with SVPWM technique are 178.79 mW and that of with SPWM are 269.45 mW. Simulink modeling and laboratory setup are developed to testify the efficacy of SVPWM and SPWM techniques. The modulation factor of SVPWM technique is 0.907 which is higher as compared to SPWM technique with 0.785 modulation factor.

Nowadays, most three-phase, “off the shelf” inverters use electrolytic capacitors at the DC bus to provide short term energy storage. However, this has a direct impact on inverter lifetime and the total cost of the photovoltaic system. This article proposes a novel control strategy called a 120° bus clamped PWM (120BCM). The 120BCM modulates the DC bus and uses a smaller DC bus capacitor value, which is typical for film capacitors. Hence, the inverter lifetime can be increased up to the operational lifetime of the photovoltaic panels. Thus, the total cost of ownership of the PV system will decrease significantly. Furthermore, the proposed 120BCM control strategy modulates only one phase current at a time by using only one leg to perform the modulation. As a result, switching losses are significantly reduced. The full system setup is designed and presented in this paper with some practical results.

Few switching transitions in high power and medium voltage application of Power converters are desirable. The selective harmonics elimination (SHE) pulse width modulation offers a better quality waveform with lower switching transitions and hence lower switching losses. The SHE is a pre-programmed modulation technique where certain amounts of lower order harmonics are removed and fundamental voltage is controlled. After Fourier analysis of output waveform, a set of nonlinear transcendental equations is obtained which exhibits, multiple, unique or no solution in different range of modulation index (MI). In this paper, an iterative method based on the Jacobian estimate is proposed to solve a highly non-linear set of SHE equations. The proposed technique is easy in implementation and can solve a large number of such equations as computation of the Jacobian matrix in the subsequent iteration is estimated from the previous values.  Moreover, the proposed method also removes the singularity problem, especially for large SHE equations. High accuracy in the initial guess is also not essential for this method and can converge to the solution with any random initial guess. The computational and simulation results are given to validate the concept. The hardware result is provided to confirm the computational and simulation results.

The asynchronous or Induction Motor (IM) is one of the most widely used electrical machines in the world, due to the three following advantages namely 1.Their construction is simple and rugged 2.The absence of slip rings, commutators and brushes make it cheaper, and 3.It is also maintenance free compared to DC motors and Synchronous motor due to wear and tear of brushes, slip rings and commutators respectively. The Section 1 deals with the introduction of induction motor and Direct Torque Control scheme. Section 2 briefly discusses the types of Induction motor. Section 3 tells about the control strategies of Induction motor respectively scalar control and vector control, and also briefly explains about Direct Torque Control (DTC) method. The Section 4 discuss about the Types of Control Strategies for Torque ripple Reductions in DTC as well as the two proposed schemes namely 1.Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) for DTC-SVM and 2.Artificial Neural Network (ANN) controller for DTC-SVM respectively for IM and its results, The two proposed schemes uses Hybrid Asymmetric Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (HASVPWM) for switching the inverter. The Section 5 revels about the modern advanced techniques such as ANN and FLC based DTC.

This paper deals with a novel natural sampled pulse width modulation (PWM) switching strategy for voltage source inverter through carrier modification. The proposed inverted sine carrier PWM (ISCPWM) method, which uses the conventional sinusoidal reference signal and an inverted sine carrier, has a better spectral quality and a higher fundamental component compared to the conventional sinusoidal PWM (SPWM) without any pulse dropping. The ISCPWM strategy enhances the fundamental output voltage particularly at lower modulation index ranges while keeping the total harmonic distortion (THD) lower without involving changes in device switching losses. The presented mathematical preliminaries for both SPWM and ISCPWM give a conceptual understanding and a comparison of the strategies. The detailed comparison of the harmonic content and fundamental component of the ISCPWM output for different values of modulation index with the results obtained for the SPWM is also presented. Finally, the proposed modulator has been implemented in field programmable gate array (FPGA- Xilinx Spartan 3) and tested with the proto-type inverter.


This paper deals with sensorless vector controlled induction motor in which torque pulsations are reduced with improved input of induction motor. In proposed technique two multi winding transformers are used for generation of 18 sinusoidal signals given to rectifier unit and the rectifier output given as input to 9 level multi level inverter. In this proposed technique gating signals to the inverter switches will be provided through space vector pulse width modulation which considers speed as reference. This configuration was simulated in MATLAB/Simulink.and the simulation results are presented here with improvement in reduction of THD.
