Evaluation of the Perception and Participation in Continuing Professional Development Among Physiotherapists in South-Western, Nigeria

BACKGROUND: Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes are important components of professional training to maintain competence. In spite of the documented relevance of CPD on professional development, it remains unclear as to the level of participation or perception of physiotherapists in CPD activities.OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide insight into perception, participation and barriers towards CPD among physiotherapists in south-western Nigeria.METHODS The study was an analytical cross-sectional survey involving 143 physiotherapists. All subjects were evaluated using a 27 item questionnaire that sought information on bio data, clinical practice issues, perception, participation, and barriers regarding CPD. Data was analysed using SPSS version 20 and summarised using descriptive statistics of mean, standard deviation, bar charts, pie charts and tables. Spearman’s Rank Order was used to find the relationship between variables.RESULTS: The reported experience of the respondents showed that forty-five (31.50%) of the participants had worked for less than five years while 41(28.70%) had worked for more than 10 years. A significant number of physiotherapists showed good attitude towards CPD. 88.70% recognized CPD as an integral aspect of being a modern health care, 81.90% reported that CPD is another perspective of clinical effectiveness, 77.60% also accept that CPD incorporates clinical proficiency into clinical practice. 94% of the respondents have engaged in CPD since graduation with majority doing less than 5 CPD courses yearly. There was a significant relationship between number of CPD courses taken yearly and the professional cadre of the respondents (p=0.002). Majority, (37.6%) of the respondents identified financial constraint and lack of CPD in area of interest (21.6%) as well as lack of motivation (16%) as constraints to participation in CPD programmes.CONCLUSION: Physiotherapists demonstrated positive attitudes towards CPD. Financial Constraints, lack of CPD in area of interest as well as lack of motivation were identified as main barriers at practice facilities, thus stressing the need to motivate healthcare personnel in their quest to improve skills. There should be need for reforms to develop targeted and cost-effective CPD programmes to improve professional competence and emphasis on some informal forms of CPD that would be easier to engage in depending on the learning objectives of the professionals.

Purpose: Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes are important components of professional training to maintain competence. There is insufficient information regarding physiotherapists’ participation in CPD activities in Ghana. This study aimed to provide insight into the engagement, attitude, and barriers towards CPD activities among Ghanaian physiotherapists. Methods: A cross-sectional survey study involved 50 clinical physiotherapists who were registered with the Ghana Association of Physiotherapists. A validated questionnaire that contained 34 open and closed-ended items was adapted from an existing tool to gather information from the participants. The questionnaire sought information on biodata, clinical practice issues, engagement, attitudes, and barriers regarding CPD. Data were analysed using frequency distributions, means, percentages, and one sample proportion (z score) test. Significance level was set a priori at p< 0.05. Results: The reported clinical experience of the participants showed that the majority (n=33: 67.34%) had worked less than six years whilst 11 (22.45%) had worked for more than 10 years. Most respondents 27(56%) spend 1 to 3 hours per week reading their professional literature. A significant proportion (p≤0.05) of physiotherapists showed good attitude towards CPD. Lack of leadership direction (22%) and non-availability of relevant courses (18%) were identified as the main barriers by the respondents at health practice facilities. At the national level, lack of sponsorship (33%) and information (23%) were cited as their barriers. Conclusion: Physiotherapists demonstrated a positive attitude towards CPD. Lack of sponsorship and leadership direction were identified as main barriers at the national level and practice facility respectively, thus stressing the need to motivate healthcare personnel in their quest to improve skills.

Objective This study aims to assess the educational needs and professional competencies of community pharmacists in Qatar to inform the development of relevant continuing professional development (CPD) programs. Methods A mixed-methods cross-sectional exploratory study targeting community pharmacists was conducted using a questionnaire and an event diary. Descriptive and inferential analyses were utilized to analyze the data using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS®) version 21 software. For the event diary, thematic content analysis was used for data analysis. Results Drug information skills and pharmaceutical care process were the most identified topics for inclusion in CPD programs. None of the pharmacists thought that they were competent in core areas of pharmacy practice. Community pharmacists who filled an event diary highlighted the need for development in areas such as communication skills and medication safety. Conclusion The identified needs shall help in developing a CPD program that addresses what community pharmacists perceive as educational and professional training needs.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the effects of colleague and supervisor support on work engagement, examining the mediating role of possibilities for professional development in a healthcare setting.Design/methodology/approachA cross-sectional survey design was used. A sample of 253 Colombian nurses from a private hospital completed a series of questionnaires.FindingsAccording to the results, support from both colleagues and supervisors influences the work engagement of healthcare personnel. This research provides evidence about how to encourage work engagement in nursing staff through an adequate environment characterized by support and opportunities for career advancement.Research limitations/implicationsIn this study, a cross-sectional design was used; therefore, the generalization is limited, and it is not possible to infer causality.Originality/valueProviding certain conditions can promote not only work engagement with its desirable effects, but it may also mitigate the burden of a complex environment such as healthcare.

Background & Aim: Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) remains to be an issue among nurses. The relatively new implementation of the CPD Act in the Philippines has led to varying perceptions and oppositions that warrant exploration. This study aimed to determine the awareness, attitude, facilitators, and barriers to CPD among hospital nurses in the Philippines. Methods & Materials: This study employed a descriptive, cross-sectional survey design with 237 randomly selected nurses in tertiary hospitals in Iloilo City, Philippines. Self-administered instruments were used to gather self-report data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ttest, ANOVA, and Pearson’s r. Results: Results indicated that nurses were moderately aware of the CPD law (M=2.31; SD=.31), were positive about the importance of CPD (M=3.91; SD=.72) but were ambivalent toward CPD implementation (M=5.98; SD=2.01). Attitude toward CPD importance significantly differed (p=.000) across age group. Awareness of CPD law (p=.000) and attitude toward the importance of CPD (p=.000) were significantly related to their attitude toward the implementation of CPD. Awareness that CPD is a requirement for license renewal (90.7%), knowledge that it can help improve skills at work (78.9%), and sponsorship from the organization (62%) were considered the major facilitators while cost (98.75%), not available to all staff (61.6%), and time-related factors (60.3%) were the major barriers to CPD participation. Conclusion: Along with current efforts to strengthen CPD in the country, it is hoped that identification of knowledge gaps and addressing the barriers may lead to better understanding, acceptance, and participation of nurses to mandatory CPD.

Background and study objectiveIn response to growing pressures on healthcare systems, the advanced clinical practice (ACP) role has been implemented widely in the UK and internationally. In England, ACP is a level of practice applicable across various healthcare professions, who exercise a level of autonomy across four domains, referred to as the four pillars of practice (education, leadership, research and clinical practice). A national framework for ACP was established in 2017 to ensure consistency across the ACP role, however current ACP governance, education and support is yet to be evaluated. This study aimed to analyse data from a national survey of the ACP role to inform the development and improvement of policies relating to ACP in the National Health Service (NHS) in England.DesignA cross-sectional survey with free-text comments.SettingThe survey was distributed across primary and secondary levels of care to three distinct groups in England, including individual ACPs, NHS provider organisations and Trusts and primary care settings.ParticipantsA total of 4365 surveys were returned, from ACP staff (n=4013), NHS provider organisations and Trusts (n=166) and primary care organisations (n=186).ResultsConsiderable variation was found in role titles, scope of practice, job descriptions and educational backgrounds of ACPs. Differing approaches to governance were noted, which led to inconsistent ACP frameworks in some organisations. A further challenge highlighted included committing time to work across the four pillars of advanced practice, particularly the research pillar. ACPs called for improvements in supervision and continuing professional development alongside further support in navigating career pathways.ConclusionsA standardised approach may support ACP workforce development in England and enable ACPs to work across the four pillars of practice. Due to the wide uptake of ACP roles internationally, this study has relevance across professions for global healthcare workforce transformation

Despite increasing research on the concept of addictive eating, there is currently no published evidence on the views of health professionals who potentially consult with patients presenting with addictive eating behaviours, or of students training to become health professionals. This study aimed to explore the views and understanding of addictive eating behaviours among health professionals and health professionals in training and to identify potential gaps in professional development training. An international online cross-sectional survey was conducted in February–April 2020. The survey (70 questions, 6 key areas) assessed participants’ opinions and clinical experience of addictive eating; opinions on control, responsibility, and stigma relating to addictive eating; and knowledge of addictive eating and opinions on professional development training. In total, 142 health professionals and 33 health professionals in training completed the survey (mean age 38.1 ± 12.5 years, 65% from Australia/16% from the U.K.) Of the health professionals, 47% were dietitians and 16% were psychologists. Most participants (n = 126, 72%) reported that they have been asked by individuals about addictive eating. Half of the participants reported that they consider the term food addiction to be stigmatising for individuals (n = 88). Sixty percent (n = 105) reported that they were interested/very interested in receiving addictive eating training, with the top two preferred formats being online and self-paced, and face-to-face. These results demonstrate that addictive eating is supported by health professionals as they consult with patients presenting with this behaviour, which supports the views of the general community and demonstrates a need for health professional training.

ObjectivesTo examine experiences of participation in a mandatory system of continuing professional development (CPD) among doctors in Ireland, in order to identify areas for improvement.DesignA qualitative cross-sectional design was used.Participants1408 participants (701 male, 707 female) were recruited via email from a population of 4350 doctors enrolled on a Royal College of Physicians of Ireland Professional Competence Scheme (PCS) for the 2017/2018 year, and completed an online survey as part of a larger study examining experiences and attitudes towards participation in PCS. A subset of the sample (434 participants) responded to an optional open-ended question about PCS participation. Responses to the open-ended question were analysed using thematic analysis.ResultsThematic analysis resulted in five main themes relating to perceived barriers to PCS participation across a wide range of areas: ‘Evidence of participation’, ‘The structure of PCS’, ‘Questioning the benefits of formal CPD’, ‘Workplace challenges’ and ‘Access issues’.ConclusionsTaken together, the five themes outlined in this study give a wide-ranging, in-depth picture of the challenges faced by Irish doctors, which expand on well-documented factors such as time constraints, to illustrate a series of complex, interacting factors. Some barriers, such as difficulty obtaining evidence of participation, may be relatively easily addressed. Others, such as issues with the way the PCS is structured, are more intractable, and require further research to understand more fully and develop appropriate solutions.

Non-medical prescribing has seen rapid growth in recent years in the United Kingdom. It has been shown to be beneficial to patients and healthcare services. There are advantages for practitioners who choose to take on this extended role, however, some nurse independent prescribers only use their prescribing qualification in a limited way and others not at all. This literature review will consider the barriers and enablers for nurse prescribers who work in primary care. Five papers were selected from a database search of Ovid Medline, PubMed, Cinahl, and Google Scholar: two meta-syntheses, one systematic review, a national cross-sectional survey and a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews. The results showed that key areas of continuing professional development, support, and organisational factors could affect prescribing in either a positive or negative way and that these areas were often interrelated. There was little difference in these issues between primary care and the acute sector. Ensuring access to continuing professional development, the provision of ongoing clinical and managerial support and improvement to infrastructure along with further research are recommended to ensure nurse independent prescribers advance and fully utilise their prescribing qualification and that this vital service continues to develop and expand.
