Background: Systemic cytokines are elevated in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hemodialysis patients compared to the general population. However, whether cytokine levels interfere with vascular remodeling increasing the risk of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) failure remains unknown. Methods: This is a case-control study of 64 patients who underwent surgery for AVF creation (32 with AVF maturation failure and 32 matching controls with successful maturation). A total of 74 cytokines, including chemokines, interferons, interleukins, and growth factors, were measured in preoperative plasma samples using multiplex assays. Sixty-two patients were included in the statistical analyses. Associations with AVF failure were assessed using paired comparisons and conditional logistic regressions accounting for paired strata. Results: Seven cytokines were significantly higher in patients with AVF maturation failure than in matching controls (G-CSF, IL-6, MDC, RANTES, SDF-1α/β, TGFα, and TPO). Of these, G-CSF (odds ratio 1.71 [1.05-2.79] per 10 pg/mL), MDC (1.60 [1.08-2.38] per 100 pg/mL), RANTES (1.55 [1.10-2.17] per 100 pg/mL), SDF-1α/β (1.18 [1.04-1.33] per 1000 pg/mL), and TGFα (OR 1.39 [1.003-1.92] per 1 pg/mL) showed an incremental association by logistic regression. Conclusions: This study identified a profile of plasma cytokines associated with adverse maturation outcomes in AVFs. These findings may open the doors for future therapeutics and markers for risk stratification.

Contact dermatitis is skin infection occurring because of allergen and irritant material. Data of Kandis Health Center show 389 cases of dermatitis, 97 cases among cases of dermatitis are oil palm plantation workers living in Belutu Village. The objective of research is to detect factors associating with contact dermatitis on oil palm plantations workers in Belutu Village. The design type of occurrence research is case control study. Population of cases is 97 workers suffering from contact dermatitis and population of control is 1235 workers who are not suffering from contact dermatitis. Based on case control study in which one cases and two control, significant level of 5%, power of test 90%, it is 81 cases and 162 controls taken from each population by systematic random sampling. Analysis of data consists of one variable, two variables, and multiple logistic regressions analysis. Chemical contact (CI 95% OR: 1,34 – 4,12), without Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (CI 95% OR: 1,110 – 3,405), poor Personal hygiene CI 95% OR: 1,087 – 3,415), associating with contact dermatitis. Chemical contact, without using PPE, and poor personal hygiene effect the occurrence of contact dermatitis on oil palm plantations workers in Belutu Village. Recommendation is to avoid chemical contact, use PPE and improve personal hygiene. Suggestion formulated based on the recommendation.

Objective: Dysregulation of the immune system during pregnancy is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Recent studies report cytokine changes during the acute phase of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. We examine whether there is a lasting association between SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and peripheral blood cytokine levels. Study design: We conducted a case-control study at the Mount Sinai health system in NYC including 100 SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody positive people matched to 100 SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody negative people on age, race/ethnicity, parity, and insurance status. Blood samples were collected at a median gestational age of 34 weeks. Levels of 14 cytokines were measured. Results: Individual cytokine levels and cytokine cluster Eigenvalues did not differ significantly between groups, indicating no persisting maternal cytokine changes after SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the acute inflammatory response after SARS-CoV-2 infection may be restored to normal values during pregnancy.
