This study examines how excess cash drives earnings management and firm value in China. Using a fixed effect panel regression on a sample of 12,629 observations covering 300 firms listed in the Shanghai Stock Exchange, we find that excess cash has a positive impact on firm value confirming pecking order theory. Our results show that earnings management has a negative impact on firm value in China, which supports the efficient earnings management view. We find that managers in Chinese firms are less likely to use excess cash for manipulating earnings. We provide empirical evidence that firms with excess cash seem to use it more for precautionary purpose than earnings management and the excess corporate liquidity of Chinese firms is used for value-enhancing activities. The test of robustness using the Instrumental Variable (IV) model confirms the results of the study. Our study merges two areas of corporate finance by incorporating agency problems concerning earnings management and cash holdings

This study aimed to investigate the effect of the independent commissioner and of the characteristics of the audit committee (measured by auditor size, independence, expertise, and activities) on the efficient or opportunistic earnings management. In terms of those companies listed on Indonesia Stock Exchange. The sample consists of 186 observations of those manufacturing companies in Indonesia Stock Exchange during the 2013-2018. Using panel regression fixed effect method, independent commissioners are found to have a significant effect on reducing earnings management. Based on The Positive Accounting Theory, the efficient perspective will occur when the compensation contract and internal control system, including monitoring done by the board of commissioners, limit the common view opportunistic manager and motivate the manager to choose the right accounting policy. The effective monitoring conducted by an independent commissioner can reduce agency costs because management prioritizes the best interests of shareholders by maximizing company resources. Furthermore, it was found that audit committee size can reduce earning management. It is due to the wide range of skills possessed by audit committee members to exercise oversight over management. Audit committees with accounting and financial expertise can reduce earnings management. This part of finding indicates that audit committee may tend to uphold conservative as accounting mechanism. Accounting conservatism has an important role to play in restricting opportunistic management behavior.

One of the things that can be done to maximize firm value is by having a board of directors with diverse characteristics. Gender diversity in the firm’s board of directors can bring a positive impact to the firm. Females are generally more risk-averse than males, and this could lead to a lower risk that must be borne by the firm. This study is conducted to investigate the impact of Board Gender Diversity to firm’s value and financial risk. Using 51 manufacturing companies listed in the Indonesia Stock Exchange from year 2016 to 2017, data was analyzed with the multiple linear regression model for panel data. The findings suggest that the presence of female directors has a positive and significant effect to firm’s value, and a negative but not significant effect to firm’s financial risk

This study investigated financial leverage on earnings management in manufacturing firms in Nigeria. A total of twenty-nine (29) listed firms on the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) were studied, and secondary data were extracted from their annual financial statements as reported in the factbook. Ordinary least squares (OLS) method was used to analyze the data. The results revealed that: the management of manufacturing companies in Nigeria employs all the three strategies of earnings management in their companies. The relationships between financial leverage and each of the dependent variables are positive but weak. Financial leverage does not have a significant impact on accruals earnings management in listed manufacturing firms in Nigeria; but it does on real earnings management and deferred tax earnings management; The study concludes that financial leverage has a positive impact on accrual earnings management, while both financial leverage and total leverage has a negative effect on real earning management. The study recommends that users of financial statements should factor in financial leverage in assessing reported earnings by lowering/upping their expectations as to the reliability of the earnings, depending on whether financial leverage is high or low.
