Since the cost of feed is increasing due to the keen competition between humans and animals, there is a need to critically seek for a matching alternative. Castor seed cake, a residue after the extraction of oil from nutrients-rich castor seed constitutes a waste which can be converted into livestock feed. Thus, the study was carried out to investigate the effect of graded levels of castor seed cake diets on haematological and serum biochemical indices of weanling albino rats in an experiment that lasted 21 days. Thirty weanling Wistar albino rats were weighed individually and randomly assigned to 5 dietary treatments with 3 replicates of two rats in a completely randomized design. Diet 1 was a nitrogen-free diet (NFD), while diets 2, 3, 4, and 5 had 0% (without castor seed cake inclusion), 2, 4 and 6% castor seed cake replacing soyabean meal respectively. At day 21, blood samples were obtained from two rats per replicate for haematological and serum analysis. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) observed in all the parameters (packed cell volume, haemaglobin, red blood cell, white blood cell, lymphocyte, neutrophil, monocyte, eosinophil and platelet) measured. Similarly, diet had no effect on the serum biochemical indices (creatinine, urea, total protein and globulin) measured. Significant difference (P<0.05) was however observed in albumin (2.62 – 3.18g/dL) of rats on the different experimental diets. The albumin concentrations of weanling albino rats on dietary treatments were similar to those on the control diet but significantly (P<0.05) higher (3.09 – 3.18g/dL) than those on the nitrogen free diet. It can be concluded that castor seed cake can replace soyabean meal up to 6% inclusion level without eliciting detrimental effect on blood profile of weanling wistar albino rats.

The chemical composition and the effects of four local species of beans on the liver and kidney function of Wistar albino rats were examined. The four beans species are Cajanus Cajan, Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis, Phaseolus vulgaris L ‘Red kidney’, and Phaseolus vulgaris 'Black turtle’. The results obtained for the proximate composition analysis revealed that the protein content of the bean species was higher in P. vulgaris L ‘Red kidney’ (18.54±0.01a %), and P. vulgaris 'Black turtle’ (18.36±0.01a %) with no significant difference at P< 0.05. The phytochemical composition analysis revealed that the beans contain various phytochemicals including some anti-nutritional factors. The mineral composition analysis shows that V. u. subsp. Sesquipedalis had a higher level of minerals (4.80±4.43a mg/100g) followed by C. cajan (3.24±2.64b mg/100g). The experimental design comprises of 30 male Wistar albino rats distributed into 5 groups of 6 rats each. Each group except the control received 50g of normal rat feed + 100g of beans body weight. The effects of the beans species on the biochemical parameters suggest no adverse effects when compared to the control. Despite that, these beans contain high nutritional components that are of nutritional interest as as well as some anti-nutritional factors.

Abstract Background: The present study aims to study the Hormonal profile and haematological parameters of Wistar albino rats treated with methanolic and aqueous extracts of Schleichera oleosa.Result: The amount of RBC was found to be 9.6±0.057106/mm3, 9.7±0.0125, 106/ 9.5±0.003, 106/mm3 9.5±0.012 106/mm3 and 9.5±0.023 106/mm3. The amount of WBC was found to be 13.5±0.058 103/mm3,13.6±0.0113 103/mm3,13.7±0.021 103/mm3, 9.5±0.012 103/mm3 and 9.5±0.023 103/mm3. Platelets, 396±0.577 103/mm3, 395±0.03 103/mm3 , 397±0.042103/mm3 , 398±0.020103/mm3, and 397±0.011103/mm3 for controlled group, low dose of methanolic extract, high dose of methanolic extract, low dose of aqueous extract and high dose of aqueous extract respectively. The packed cell volume, haemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin, corpuscular haemoglobin concentration and amount of neutrophils, Eosinophils, Lymphocytes, Basophils and Monocytes were measured and no significant change was noticed. The amount of testosterone showed significant increase from 0.75± 0.024 pg/ mL (control) 2.96± 0.088 pg/ mL, 3.9± 0.14pg / mL, 1.85± 0.076 pg/ mL and 2.85± 0.074 pg/ mL.Conclusions: The study suggests that the prolonged treatment of Wistar rats with both low dose and high dose of methanolic as well as the aqueous extract of Schleichera oleosa is not toxic and they increased the amount of testosterone in the blood which is indicative of their testosterone enhancement.
