scholarly journals Mechanical Behaviour of Micro and Nano Scaled Silicon Carbide Reinforced Al 6063 Metal Matrix Composite

In this research study Al 6063 is used as the base matrix element, due to less weight, high specific strength, impact strength and good mechanical properties. Further, SiC are reinforced in Al 6063 matrix for enhancing its properties. Stir casting process has been accomplished for fabricating the (Al 6063-SiC) composites. In this experiment two various size of reinforcement particle are utilized, one of them is micro sized and another one is nano sized. Micro sized reinforcement particle has dimensions of (25-40µ), while nano sized particle consists dimensions of 500nm. The weight fraction of the micro and nano sized SiC particle taken in this experiment are in order of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10% respectively. Various mechanical tests such as hardness, tensile tests and impact tests were conducted for determining the effect of micro and nano sized SiC reinforced aluminum matrix composites. The comparative study related with impact strength, hardness and tensile strength of micro and nano sized silicon carbide reinforced with aluminum matrix composites were shown in this work. There is an enhancement of mechanical properties has been observed with enhancement in weight percentage of micro sized silicon carbide, on other hand there is also a decrease in mechanical properties has been found while increasing the weight percentage of nano sized silicon carbide. The main objective of this paper is to enhance the mechanical properties of the Al 6063 metal matrix with reinforcing silicon carbide particle.

It is well known that the addition of ceramic phases in an alloy e.g. aluminum, in form of fibers or particles influences its mechanical properties. This leads to a new generation of materials, which are called metal matrix composites (MMCs). They have found a lot of application during the last twenty-five years due to their low density, high strength and toughness, good fatigue and wear resistance. Aluminum matrix composites reinforced by ceramic particles are well known for their good thermophysical and mechanical properties. As a result, during the last years, there has been a considerable interest in using aluminum metal matrix composites in the automobile industry. Automobile industry use aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with SiC or Al2O3 particles for the production of pistons, brake rotors, calipers and liners. However, no reference could be cited in the international literature concerning aluminum reinforced with TiB particles and Fe and Cr, although these composites are very promising for improving the mechanical properties of this metal without significantly alter its corrosion behavior. Several processing techniques have been developed for the production of reinforced aluminum alloys. This paper is concerned with the study of TiB, Fe and Cr reinforced aluminum produced by the stir-casting method.

Aluminum matrix composites refer to the class of light weight high performance aluminum centric material systems. The unique tailorability of the composite materials for the specific requirements makes these materials more popular in a variety of applications such as aerospace, automotive (pistons, cylinders, liners, bearings), and structural components, resulting in savings of material and energy. In this project, fabrication of Aluminum MMC by liquid metallurgy route (Squeeze Casting) is discussed in detail. The mechanical properties of 6082 aluminum alloy discontinuously – reinforced with fine particulates of SiCp reinforcement and solutionising time during heat treatment of the composite on hardness, density and impact strength have been evaluated. The cardinal reasons behind the variation in the hardness and impact strength have been discussed.

Aluminum matrix composites reinforced by ceramic particles are well know for their good thermo-physical and mechanical properties. As a result, during the last years, there has been a considerable interest in using aluminum metal matrix composites (MMCs) in the automobile industry. These potential applications have greatly stimulated the tribological studies of MMCs under different operating conditions. In this paper, TiB – particles - reinforced aluminum - tungsten matrix composites were fabricated by the cost – effective squeeze – casting technology and their microstructure characteristics and mechanical properties were investigated. The microstructure observation showed that the produced composites were dense, with no micro-holes and obvious defects. Their wear resistance was evaluated using a pin on disc type equipment under dry wear conditions and found significantly increased compared to pure Al metal.

Mechanical characteristic of silicon carbide particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites produced by semi solid stir casting technique was investigated. Al7Si and Al7SiMg were used as metal matrix. High purity silicon carbida with average particle size mesh 400 was used as reinforcement particle. Aluminum matrix composites with variation of SiC: 5 %, 7.5 % and 10 % wt were manufactured by the semi solid stir casting technique. Stiring process was performed by 45 ° degree carbide impeller at rotation of 600 rpm and temperature of 570 °C for 15 minutes. Characteritation of composites speciment were: microscopic examination, density, hardness, tensile and impact test. Hardness and density were tested randomly at top, midlle and bottom of composites product. Based on distribution of density, distribution of hardness and SEM photomicrograph, it can be concluded that semisolid stir casting produces the uniform distribution of particles in the matrix alloy. The results also indicate that introducing SiC reinforcement in aluminum matrix increases the hardness of Al7Si composite and Al7SiMg composite. Calculated porosities increases with increasing wt % of SiC reinforcements in composite. The addition of 1 % Mg also increases the hardness of composites, reduces porosities of composite and enhances the mechanical properties of composites.

Aluminium6061 alloy composites containing various volume fractions of Silicon Carbide (SiC) particles (0, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%) were prepared by stir casting method. In the current study, microstructures and mechanical properties of cast silicon carbide (SiC) reinforced aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) were investigated. Optical microscopic examination, SEM, tensile strength test, hardness test and elongation test were carried out. The results showed that with the addition of SiC reinforcements in Aluminum6061 matrix increased hardness and tensile strength however, decreased elongation at 25% SiC reinforced AMC. Hardness and tensile strength were observed to be are maximum at 25% SiC and elongation is minimum at 25% SiC. Microstructural observation confirmed clustering and homogeneous distribution of SiC particles in the Al6061 matrix.

Metal matrix composites are the resultant of combination of two or more elements or compounds, possessing enhanced characteristics than the individual constituents present in them. This paper deals with the fabrication of Al 2014-SiC composite and investigation of its Microstructure and Mechanical properties. 2014 Aluminium alloy is characterized by good hardness. It is selected as the base metal. The Silicon Carbide is characterized by good strength and low density (3.21 g/cm3). It is chosen as the reinforcement. Silicon Carbide is coated with Nickel by electroless method to increase its wettability and binding properties. The fabrication of metal matrix composites is done by stir casting in a furnace, by introducing the required quantities of reinforcement into molten Aluminium alloy. The reinforcement and alloy is mixed by means of stirring, with the help of a stirrer. The base alloy and the composites are then tested for mechanical properties such as tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength and hardness. The fabricated samples have higher tensile strength and impact strength than the alloy. Microstructure of the samples, are analyzed using optical microscope.
