This research focuses on deliver a SDS implementation model that facilitate the definition of requirements to be delivered in a timely manner to systems. Software Defined Storage (SDS) enables different hardware technologies to be homogenized and deliver independent storage. The technologies included on the implementation model are the open-source projects Red Hat Gluster Storage and Red Hat Ceph Storage. Both technologies are integrated into a virtualization platform, it is compared at a functional and economic level with respect to some enterprise solutions and it is shown that the same operations are performed as a viable technological alternative. The favorable results of the model are presented and the great benefit that open-source technologies have open scope that allows it to be integrated into other projects is presented.

Advances in the communication technologies, along with the birth of new communication paradigms leveraging on the power of the social, has fostered the production of huge amounts of data. Old-fashioned computing paradigms are unfit to handle the dimensions of the data daily produced by the countless, worldwide distributed sources of information. So far, the MapReduce has been able to keep the promise of speeding up the computation over Big Data within a cluster. This article focuses on scenarios of worldwide distributed Big Data. While stigmatizing the poor performance of the Hadoop framework when deployed in such scenarios, it proposes the definition of a Hierarchical Hadoop Framework (H2F) to cope with the issues arising when Big Data are scattered over geographically distant data centers. The article highlights the novelty introduced by the H2F with respect to other hierarchical approaches. Tests run on a software prototype are also reported to show the increase of performance that H2F is able to achieve in geographical scenarios over a plain Hadoop approach.

For more than 40 years the development of Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools has been focused on the description of the geometry of products. More recently, CAD tools have evolved in tools to support the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), which are more oriented to support the management aspects of the product development process than the design process itself. Recently, it has been introduced a new design method that adopts a top-down approach, which starts from the definition of a Functional MockUp (FMU) allowing to simulate the overall behavior and the use of the concept level before the detailed design. This method is closer to the typical logical sequence of design, where the designer has at first an overall view of a system and of its sub-components, and then he takes care of the details. This method is supported by commercial tools, as the LMS-Amesim suite, or by open-source software tools based on the Modelica language. This is an open-source language allowing designers to integrate and describe at functional level several aspects of a system, including mechanical, electrical, thermal, hydraulic, control and others allowing to simulate all together. The paper analyses this methodological approach and presents some applications where some systems are designed using a functional modeling approach.

Collecting experimental data from multiple sensing devices has just recently become quite popular in behavioral and social sciences. Among existing devices, mobile phones stand out as they allow researchers to collect data from individuals in an unbiased, precise, unobtrusive, and timely manner. Current mobile sensing applications are typically developed from scratch, provide no reusable components, and frequently do not take advantage of the devices’ processing capabilities. In light of such limitations, this work presents a novel tool that leverages mobile phones not only to collect data via their sensors but also to process them on the device as soon as they are gathered. The tool provides researchers with easy-to-use services that allow them to configure the required processing routines on the mobile phones. This work proposes a new approach for rapid deployment of sensing campaigns targeted at scientists with basic technical knowledge and requiring low effort. We performed an evaluation aimed at determining whether there is a significant improvement in terms of user effectiveness and efficiency in the definition of new components. The results suggest that the proposed tool speeds up the time and reduces the effort taken for setting up and deploying a sensing campaign.

The need of an approach for the definition of a platform-independent medical digital library, using only open-source tools, will be described. To test the need and the success of such an approach, a library will be created, which can later be used in a larger scale as a general purpose digital medical tool, when comes the need to evaluate an image. As a first test, the library will be used in the development of a tool aimed to aid doctors in otoplasty candidates’ evaluation. This tool shall be developed and tested first on a mobile platform, so the potential of the developed library can be tested on the most adverse situation. Also, the resulting library will be license free, making easier the collaboration of others in development and integration with other software, translating in a better spread of the library in medical practice

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Considering built and landscape heritage, the paper demonstrates how it is necessary to conserve the historic stratification and to define new compatible plans and uses, identifying the ways to mitigate alteration impacts, requalify degraded areas, enhance natural, historic and cultural values, improve documentary and educational options, and manage new tasks and opportunities. Particularly, the historic complexity of built and landscape heritage, and the level of permanence can be recognized and evaluated by comparing multi-temporal historic and current maps, and surveying the present situation in order to define preservation strategies.</p><p>Innovative tools (open source map registry, open source GIS data management) support the critical analysis of the maps, the representation of historic stratification, the evaluation of conservation levels, and the definition of heritage reuse and management. Moreover, innovative applications based on advanced Virtual Hub, when used to publish historical maps as Open Data (GEOPAN ATL@S APP), allow a larger public of non-expert users (tourists, citizens, bikers, students, etc.) to access the extraordinary richness of the historical map contents, and navigate across urban landscapes. Such APPs are thus becoming instruments of awareness with a strong pro-active capacity to stimulate new design plans encompassing local cultural identity and rediscovering traces of the past.</p>

The article considers the existing views on the definition, elements of economic security of an enterprise, as well as typification features used in solving problems of classification of factors threatening it. The author systematizes traditional approaches to the definition of the term "economic security of an enterprise" and proposes a dualistic model of its description, in which it is presented not only as a desired state of protection of an entity engaged in entrepreneurial activity from the negative impact of external and internal factors, but also as a complex of controlled and continuous adaptation processes occurring within the enterprise in order to ensure its adaptation to changing conditions. It is also concluded here that threats to economic security that cannot be neutralized in most cases can be detected in a timely manner, which is especially important given the need to minimize negative consequences for the enterprise arising as a result of their action. As the main direction of further research in the field of classification of threats to the economic security of the enterprise, the search for correspondences between each of the types of threats to economic security and the methods by which the enterprise can effectively adapt to such threats is proposed.

Many cloud providers offer IoT services that simplify the collection and processing of IoT information. However, the IoT infrastructure composed of sensors and actuators that produces this information remains outside the cloud; therefore, application developers must install, connect and manage the cloud. This requirement can be a market barrier, especially for small/medium software companies that cannot afford the infrastructural costs associated with it and would only prefer to focus on IoT application developments. Motivated by the wish to eliminate this barrier, this paper proposes a Cloud of Things platform, called VirIoT, which fully brings the Infrastructure as a service model typical of cloud computing to the world of Internet of Things. VirIoT provides users with virtual IoT infrastructures (Virtual Silos) composed of virtual things, with which users can interact through dedicated and standardized broker servers in which the technology can be chosen among those offered by the platform, such as oneM2M, NGSI and NGSI-LD. VirIoT allows developers to focus their efforts exclusively on IoT applications without worrying about infrastructure management and allows cloud providers to expand their IoT services portfolio. VirIoT uses external things and cloud/edge computing resources to deliver the IoT virtualization services. Its open-source architecture is microservice-based and runs on top of a distributed Kubernetes platform with nodes in central and edge data centers. The architecture is scalable, efficient and able to support the continuous integration of heterogeneous things and IoT standards, taking care of interoperability issues. Using a VirIoT deployment spanning data centers in Europe and Japan, we conducted a performance evaluation with a two-fold objective: showing the efficiency and scalability of the architecture; and leveraging VirIoT’s ability to integrate different IoT standards in order to make a fair comparison of some open-source IoT Broker implementations, namely Mobius for oneM2M, Orion for NGSIv2, Orion-LD and Scorpio for NGSI-LD.
