Abstract. This study uses implicit voice theory to examine the influence of employees’ critical thinking and leaders’ inspirational motivation on employees’ voice behavior via voice efficacy. The results of a pretest of 302 employees using critical thinking questionnaires and a field study of 273 dyads of supervisors and their subordinates revealed that both employees’ critical thinking and leaders’ inspirational motivation had a positive effect on employees’ voice and that voice efficacy mediates the relationships among employees’ critical thinking, leaders’ inspirational motivation, and employees’ voice. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

As part of an on-going effort at West Oahu College (a small, liberal arts, upper-division campus of the University of Hawaii) I am experimenting with ways to help my political science students improve their ability to think critically and communicate clearly. For some time we have been aware of a large number of students having difficulties in writing and critical thinking. We have made an informal and voluntary commitment to use writing-across-thecurriculum (WAC) with faculty participating in workshops and conferring with the writing instructor who coordinates our WAC program.1In-coming students must now produce a writing proficiency sample which is analyzed, returned with numerous comments, and results in students being urged to take a writing class if there are serious problems. A writing lab is offered several times a week and students are free to drop in for help.

Abstract. While most leadership research takes the perspective of leaders influencing their followers, more recent research focused on the question how followers may influence their leaders. Kelley’s (1992) followership questionnaire was the first to assess followership behavior. To provide a basis for further research on followership in German-speaking countries, we conducted two studies to establish the psychometric properties of a German version of Kelley’s questionnaire. In Study 1, we explored the factorial structure of our translation in a heterogeneous employee sample ( N = 451). In Study 2, we tested for convergent, discriminant, and criterion-related validity in another heterogeneous employee sample ( N = 413). The results indicate satisfactory psychometric properties for two followership dimensions (i.e., active engagement and independent, critical thinking). Correlations of these two followership dimensions with other constructs were mostly in line with our expectations. We discuss the usefulness of the German followership questionnaire for research and practice.

This paper aimed at measuring the impacts of using the process approach to teach second-year English major students at the English Department of Université de Zinder (henceforth, UZ) essay writing. Drawing on the pre-test-post-test repeated measures design, this study examined the written essays produced by the EFL students before and after the writing class. These pre and post tests were scored based on a criterial fair copy, and the scores were compared by means of an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to check whether there were any statistically significant differences between the mean scores. The findings revealed that the process approach had a positive impact on the participants’ essay writing skills. Also, employing Classroom Observation, the article attempted to qualitatively measure student engagement in the writing class. The findings further exuded that the EFL students observed were cognitively involved in the learning activities conducted in the class. Based on the foregoing findings, this study recommends that the process approach to (the teaching of) writing be adopted and used to teach writing in EFL classes across/in Niger.

One of targets issued by UN through SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) in education is ensuring that all youth and adults have to achieve literacy and numeracy skills through long live education for both men and women. It is due to facts that education does not nationally wide spread among the developing and mostly, the third world countries. In those countries, the citizens whom literacy and numeracy skills are built up well are only them whose motivation in learning is high. Simply, it can be said that literacy awareness of those countries is unsatisfying. Realizing this fact, Indonesian government revises the National Curriculum of 2013 by the year 2017 and puts some important issues in learning process: (1) integrating five characters building; (2) elaborating literacy skills and 21st century skills (4C); and (3) integrating High Order Thinking Skill. Not only applied in lower education, these rules can be adopted also in higher education, such as university. Based on the literacy awareness and 4C skills that have to be developed during learning process, this research is aimed at increasing students’ soft skills through integrated character building, literacy skills habit, and critical thinking awareness in academic writing class. By enrolling action research to gain the objectives and taking whole semester, this research works on increasing students’ autonomy and honesty in learning, literacy in reading through article journal comprehension, and critical thinking through article journal summarizing.

Peer scaffolding as an important index of active student-student interaction has already aroused researchers’ interests. In addition, the application of Dynamic System Theory in language study provided researchers with a new perspective. The author conducted an eight-week research in a foreign language university in China. 56 non-English major sophomores from two classes participated in this study. The results indicated that students’ interaction in small group discussion was a dynamic system and it had all the dynamic system features such as unpredictable, sensitive to initial conditions, open, complexity, etc. With the results of this investigation, the current study concludes with some suggestions for future group discussion design.

How to cultivate critical thinking (CT) is considered as one of the most important goals of Chinese higher education over the years. However, many Chinese scholars have shown their concern on "CT Deficiency" after assessing CT skills of English majors in many universities. Thus, the affecting factors of CT development has been investigated from the perspective of the social cognitive theory by a detailed analysis of an English major with comparatively strong CT ability, attempting to find approaches to CT cultivation. After the qualitative analysis of reflection diaries and several interviews, the findings indicate that CT is shaped by the interaction of the environmental, individual and behavioural factors. Leaners can employ the strategies as interpretation, planning and implementation, self-regulation and adjustment, and reflection to facilitate the interaction
