This study was conducted to assess secondary school students’ perception of civic dispositions in Ekiti State. The study adopted descriptive research design of the survey type. Population of the study consisted of 208,956 secondary school students while the sample consisted of 1200 Senior Secondary School II and III students selected through multi-stage sampling procedure. One research question and two research hypotheses were raised for the study. A self-constructed questionnaire tilted “Students’ Perception of Civic Disposition Questionnaire” (SPCDQ) was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by Social Studies experts while reliability test conducted using test retest method yielded 0.77 coefficients. Findings of the study revealed that secondary school students perspectives on civic disposition was positive and that exhibition of traits such as avoidance of abusive arguments, obeying laws of the land, love of the country, loyalty to the principles of democracy, tolerating others for peaceful coexistence and speaking the truth are required for democratic system of government to thrive. Based on the findings it was recommended among others that students should be encouraged to always demonstrate civic dispositions and participate in political discussions, show respect for national identity and participate actively in community service as ways to eschew anti-democratic activities. This study sought to investigate the influence of parental socio-economic status (SES) on higher academic aspiration among senior secondary school students in Cross River State of Nigeria with emphasis on Ogoja Education Zone. To do this, three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The research questions were based on three variables of parental educational status, occupation and material wealth. The research instrument was a 17 item researcher-made “Parental Socio-economic status and higher academic aspiration of senior secondary school students questionnaire”. It was built on a four-point modified Likert scale. Samples comprised of 600 senior secondary three (SS3) students at the rate of 30 per school from the five local government areas in the education zone. Data were analyzed using simple percentages. The result of research question one which sought to determine the influence of parental educational status on their children’s higher educational aspirations shows that 72.16% of the respondents affirmed that parental educational status has significantly high influence on their wards educational aspiration. Research Question two was on the influence of Parental occupation on their children’s academic aspiration. It had a positive response of 37.99% which shows negative influence. The finding on Research Question three shows that 62% of the respondents were positive about the influence of parental material wealth on their academic aspiration. Based on the above findings conclusion and recommendations were drawn.

This study assessed sugar consumption among private secondary school students in Dutsin-Ma Township Katsina State, Nigeria. Three hypotheses were tested in the study. Descriptive survey research design was used. The population of this study comprised 175 (junior and senior) students of the three existing private secondary schools in Dutsin-Ma. The entire student population was studied.  A self-constructed questionnaire with a four-point Likert scale was used to collect data. The instrument was validated by four health experts. Split-half method was used to determine the reliability of the questionnaire and a reliability coefficient of 0.67 was obtained. Data collected were analysed using frequency counts and percentage for rendering the demographic profile of the respondents and answering the first research question. The t-Test was used to test the stated hypotheses at level of 0.05. The study found that most of the students (58.29%) consume more artificial sugar than sugar obtained from natural sources. The study also found significant differences in sugar consumption between students in junior secondary classes and those in senior secondary in their consumption of sugar (p< 0.05). However, the study found no significant gender difference in the consumption of sugar among the students. Based on these findings, the study recommended a reduction in consumption of sugar by students particularly unwholesome foods such as biscuits and soft drinks rich in sugar.

The authors of this study have attempted to understand whether study habits affect academic achievement among secondary and senior secondary school students of Mysore. It is also attempted to know whether students at secondary level differ from senior secondary level on their study habits. The study was conducted on the sample of 625 students of Mysore City in India using stratified random sampling technique. Results indicated that the study habits facilitate higher academic achievement. Further, it was also found that secondary school students are significantly better than senior secondary students on study habits. The findings are analyzed and explained. Thus, study habit is found to be an important correlate of academic achievement.

The present study was conducted to ascertain the environmental awareness across gender, locale, type of schools and academic stream among senior secondary school students. The sample of the study comprised of 300 11th class students studying in different government and non- government senior secondary schools of Sambhal district (U.P.) of Moradabad region. Environment Awareness Ability Measure (EAAM) by Praveen Kumar Jha (1998) was used to collect the data for the purpose. The data were analyzed using descriptive (Mean, Standard Deviations) and inferential (‘t’- test) statistics. The findings of the present study revealed that there is significant difference in environmental awareness of senior secondary school students across gender (boys and girls), type of schools (government and non-government) and academic stream (science and arts). However no significant difference is found in case of rural and urban sample. The reason for this result may be the rampant illiteracy in the district. Stakeholders should, therefore, ensure that the curriculum relating to environmental education is transacted as a core curriculum. Other activities related to environmental education viz., curricular, co- curricular and literary activities should also be organized to infuse environmental awareness among students.

The Motivation Toward the Environment Scale (MTES), developed in Canada, measures people’s self-determined motivation for doing something for the environment. Answering the call by its original developers, this study further validated the MTES within a sample of 779 Dutch-speaking senior secondary school students, aged 17 to 19, in the north of Belgium. More specifically, reliability and construct validity of a Dutch translation of the MTES were verified. To this measure, confirmatory factor analysis was used, and the hypothesized simplex structure was tested through correlation analyses. Results confirmed the reliability of the MTES and a five-scale version of the MTES, excluding identified motivation, is introduced. This variable-centered approach was complemented by the adoption of a person-centered approach for identifying MTES profiles. Using cluster analysis, four meaningful MTES profiles emerged, with amotivation scoring medium to high in all but one. Theoretical implications of the findings and suggestions for interventions and further research are discussed.
