Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is used as a medicinal plant in the treatment of liver diseases. In order to investigate germination and seedling growth in S. marianum subjected to NaCl, a three replicated experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design in the laboratory of Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Treatments included seven salinity levels (50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175 and 200 mM) and a control (distilled water). Germination percentage (GP), mean germination time (MGT), seed-ling vigour index (SVI), shoot, root and seedling weight were measured. The effect of salinity levels was significant on GP, SVI, MGT and seedling weight and length (p ≤ 0.01). However, the NaCl concentration effect was not significant on shoot : root length ratio and or shoot : root weight ratios. Results showed that germination decreased when salinity increased, while MGT increased. MGT was 1.75 times higher than in the control at the highest salt concentration. MGT difference was not significant between 75 mM NaCl and con-trol, while it dramatically increased by increasing the NaCl concentration from 150 to 200 mM NaCl. Reduc-tion slope and salt tolerance index (STI) were estimated for germination (0.54 and 231.9) and seedling stage (0.24 and 237.4). According to the results, milk thistle could be considered as a valuable medicinal plant in fairly salinized areas.

Abstract: The production of bell pepper seeds may be affected by the plant management and harvesting point of fruits. The goal of this study was to evaluate the quality of organically produced bell pepper seeds according to free plant growth, branch thinning and ripening stage. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse with randomized block design; plants were tutored to parallel tape supports, with and without branch thinning, and fruits were harvested at three ripening stages (completely green, green/reddish and red). The following determinations were made: seed moisture content of at the time of harvest and after post-harvest rest, number of seeds per fruit, seed germination, and seedling emergence. It is possible to conclude that the production of bell pepper seeds in an organic system is viable, resulting in seeds with a germination percentage and seedling emergence above 90%. The management system of plants without branch thinning results in the production of seeds with greater viability and higher quantity per fruit. The cultivation of bell peppers for seed production may be carried out with fruits at the green ripening stage (51 days after anthesis), without any quality loss.

Papaya is a very popular fruit in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world and has witnessed an increase in demand. This has fuelled an interest to develop region specific hybrids with desirable vegetative growth and vigour.  Hence a field experiment was carried out at College of horticulture and forestry, Navsari Agricultural University in Gujarat during 2018-2020 in randomized block design with three replications to know the mean performance of parents and hybrids for comparative growth performances of papaya. Wherein, thirty papaya hybrids were developed from six morphologically distinct parents through full diallel crossing technique and all the parents and hybrids were evaluated for their germination and growth parameters. The variability was distinct in all hybrids and parents for germination percentage, days taken to germination, periodical plant height and girth, number of leaves, petiole length and internodal distance. Amongst all the parents, Pusa Delicious, CO-8 and Lucknow Local exhibited improved germination, better vegetative growth and dwarf stature, respectively. Among the hybrids, Pusa Delicious x Lucknow Local was found to have dwarf stature with minimum internodal length however, the reciprocal cross: Lucknow Local x Pusa Delicious recorded maximum plant girth and number of leaves. Based on their mean performance, these parents can be used for further breeding programmes and hybrids could be exploited for cultivation.

Two field experiments were carried out at experimental farm of Faculty of Agriculture, Zagazig University, Egypt, during the two summer consecutive seasons of 2018 and 2019. To study the impact of sowing dates and some amino acids on the roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) yield in terms of number of fruits per plant, dry sepal’s yield per plant and per feddan as well as its chemical constituents in terms of total chlorophyll (SPAD) and anthocyanin (mg/100g as dry weight) contents. A split-plot experiment was carried out in the field based on a randomized complete block design with three replications. The main plot was four sowing dates (15th April, 1st May, 15th May and 1st June) and the sub-plot was five amino acids treatments (tap water as control, tyrosine and glutamine acids each at 100 or 200 ppm concentrations). The results showed that the early in sowing from June1 to April 15 increased fruit number per plant, dry sepals yield per plant (g) and per feddan (kg) as well as total chlorophyll content and anthocyanin content. Also, all the values of the studied parameters were significantly increased when the roselle plants sprayed with glutamine acid at 200 ppm compared to control. In final, planting roselle seeds in 15th April and sprayed with 200 ppm glutamine four times per season manifests to enhance yield and is adequate for fulfilling the highest anthocyanin contents in sepals of roselle under Sharkia Governorate conditions.

The problem of generative propagation of soursop is its seeds take a long time to germinate which are caused by the hard seed coat. The solution to solve that problem is scarification and coconut water soaking to simply the process of imbibition and seed germination and also stimulate the growth of shoot. This objective of the research was to determine the effect of the scarification position and the soaking with various concentrations of coconut water on seed germination and growth of soursop seedling. This research was held at the Faculty of Agriculture field, the University of Sumatera Utara in March - July 2017. The research used a factorial randomized block design with two factors and three replication. The first factor is the scarification position (without scarification, stomach scarification, top scarification) and the second factor is coconut water soaking (0%; 25%; 50%; 75 %). The result of the research showed that the germination rate parameter, germination percentage, crop height, number of leaves, root volume and dry weight of crop significantly higher on without scarification treatment than with scarification treatment. The interaction between the scarification position and soaking with various coconut water concentrations was not significantly affecting the seed germination and growth of soursop seedling.

The objective of this paper was to determine the physiological behavior and seed quality of five genotypes of Acca sellowiana regarding desiccation. Seeds were obtained from five plants of urban backyards in the cities of Dois Vizinhos - PR (A1, A2) and Vacaria - RS (A3, A4, A5). The experiment was conducted in a bifactor arrangement (5x3), with five genotypes and three levels of water content (28%, 15% and 5%), arranged into complete randomized block design, with four replicates of 50 seeds each. Seeds were germinated on absorbent paper soaked with water, being kept in BOD chamber under temperature of 25±3°C with photoperiod of 16 hours. Germination percentage, speed index and average time were assessed by counting seeds every two days for 50 days, starting from the moment of radicle emergence. No significant differences were observed for germination percentage and all genotypes surpassing 79% of germination. Desiccation of seeds had low influence on germination speed index and average time of germination, although genotype influence was verified due to genetic variability. Genotype A5 has seeds with superior quality from the others. Acca sellowiana seeds have orthodox behavior.
