Cilj: utvrditi razlike u otvorenosti i dijeljenju znanstvenih radova na Sveučilištu u Rijeci.Metode: Analizirani su znanstveni radovi autora Sveučilišta u Rijeci iz Hrvatske znanstvene bibliografije (CROSBI) u 4 područja (2017.–2019.) na uzorku od 210 radova. Kao metrički pokazatelj kvalitete časopisa korišteni su kvartili SciMago Journal Rank (SJR). Provjerena je prisutnost cjelovitog teksta u otvorenom pristupu u 3 vrste repozitorija (Repozitorij UNIRI – Dabar; ArXiv; Crosbi) i na društvenoj akademskoj mreži ResearchGate. Istraženo je postojanje razlika u stupnju sklonosti samoarhiviranju i dijeljenju radova s obzirom na područje znanosti.Rezultati: Znanstvenici iz područja prirodnih znanosti (N=55; 78;6%) i biomedicine i zdravstva (N=49; 70%) značajno više (P<0;001) objavljuju u časopisima u Q1 i Q2 kvartilama. Autori iz područja društvenih i humanističkih znanosti više objavljuju u Q3 i Q4 te časopisima izvan baze podataka Scopus (N=57; 81;4%). Udio radova u otvorenom pristupu (N=107; 51%) približno je jednak udjelu u zatvorenom pristupu (N= 103; 49%) (P=0;7825). Za samoarhiviranje i dijeljenje radova znanstvenici su koristili platformu ResearchGate (N=77); ArXiv (N=32); Repozitorij UNIRI (N=15) i Crosbi (N=9). Od svih područja znanosti; analiziramo li radove s visokim stupnjem sklonosti samoarhiviranju i dijeljenju; prednjače autori iz područja prirodnih znanosti (N=21; 60%).Zaključak: Najveći stupanj sklonosti samoarhiviranju i dijeljenju rada pokazuju znanstvenici iz prirodnih znanosti. Nije uočena povezanost između SJR kvartila časopisa i sklonosti autora da samoarhivira ili podijeli svoj rad na otvorenoj platformi.------------------------------------------------Differences in openness and sharing of scientific papers at the University of RijekaAim: to determine differences in openness and sharing of scientific papers.Methods: We have analysed scientific papers from the Croatian Scientific Bibliography (CROSBI) from University of Rijeka (Croatia) in 4 fields (2017–2019) on a sample of 210 papers. The SciMago Journal Rank (SJR) quartiles were used as a metric. We have checked the presence of the full text in open access in 3 types of repositories (Repository UNIRI-Dabar; ArXiv; CROSBI) and on social academic network ResearchGate. Tendency of self-archiving and sharing with regard to the field of science was investigated.Results: Scientists in the field of natural sciences (N=55; 78.6%); and biomedicine and health (N = 49; 70%) publish more (P <0.001) in Q1 and Q2 journals. Social sciences and humanities authors publish mostly in Q3 and Q4 journals and in journals not indexed in the Scopus database (N =57; 81.4%). The proportion of open access papers (N=107; 51%) is equal to closed papers (N=103; 49%) (P=0;7825). Scientists used ResearchGate platform (N=77); ArXiv (N=32); UNIRI Repository (N=15) and CROSBI (N=9) for the self-archiving and sharing of papers. High degree of tendency for self-archiving and sharing was observed in the field of natural sciences (N=21; 60%).Conclusion: The highest degree of tendency for self-archiving and sharing is shown by natural scientists. There was no correlation between SJR quartile and the author's tendency to self-archive or share his work on an open platform.

Located in Lyon, France, the Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University is home to 30 000 students in law, management and humanities, around 600 academic staff and 18 research units. A dedicated research support team was implemented within the University library in 2015, to promote open access to their results. In 2017, answering to requests expressed by researchers to be helped in their online publishing, the library launched an in-house incubator for open access journals in social sciences and humanities. Staff from the research units was offered an open access standard-compliant publishing platform, technical and editorial assistance, training for publications, and program to have the backlog of issues addressed.The journal incubator raison d’être is to allow the University’s research to be available on an open access basis, to reinforce good open access journal publishing practices among research units and to improve the overall visibility of the research produced by Jean Moulin Lyon 3 researchers. The project quickly gathered momentum: two other higher educational institutions have approached the library to see if they could publish on the platform, thus expanding its role beyond the limits of its parent institution. The project played an instrumental role in forming, in late 2018, a network of French incubators and publishing platforms in social sciences and humanities. Named REPÈRES, the network promotes sharing good practices among public-funded open access publishers. The Jean Moulin Lyon 3 library project is a contribution to bibliodiversity since it supports an open access model and the use of vernacular languages (French in the case at hand). The project also reinforces the intertwining of academic and library staff for the common goal of scientific publishing. Thus, the library becomes a full participant of the scientific process.

A Review of: Sotudeh, H., Ghasempour, Z., & Yaghtin, M. (2015). The citation advantage of author-pays model: The case of Springer and Elsevier OA journals. Scientometrics, 104(2), 581-608. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11192-015-1607-5 Abstract Objective – To investigate the citation performance of open access (OA) and toll access (TA) papers published in author-pays open access journals. Design – Longitudinal citation analysis. Setting – Publications in Springer and Elsevier’s author-pays open access journals. Subjects – 633 journals published using the author-pays model. This model encompasses both journals where the article processing charge (APC) is required and journals in which authors can request open access and voluntarily pay APCs for accepted manuscripts. Methods – The authors identified APC funded journals (journals funded by mandatory author processing charges as well as those where authors voluntarily paid a fee in order to have their articles openly accessible) from both Springer and Elsevier, and analyzed papers published in these journals from 2007 to 2011. The authors excluded journals that adopted the APC model later than 2007. To identify Springer titles, the authors created a search strategy to identify open access articles in SpringerLink. A total of 576 journals were identified and double checked in the Sherpa-Romeo database (a database of copyright and open access self-archiving policies of academic journals) to verify their open access policies. The authors then downloaded the journal content using SpringerLink, and using Springer Author-Mapper, separated out the open access articles from the toll access articles. In order to identify the Elsevier APC funded journals, the authors referred to “Open Access Journal Directory: A-Z,” which contained 35 OA journals (p. 584). Once the authors consulted “Sponsored articles” issued by Elsevier and verified titles in Sherpa-Romeo, they identified 57 journals that fit the “author-pays” model. The bibliographic information was downloaded and OA articles were separated from TA articles. The authors confirmed that all journals were indeed OA publications by downloading the full-text from off-campus locations; they also verified that the journals were using the APC model by visiting each journal’s website. Because of the large number of subject areas of the identified journals, the researchers decided to classify the journals into four broader categories: Health Sciences, Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Humanities. To calculate the impact of OA papers, citation per paper (CPP) was calculated for each subject area. Impact values were calculated on an annual basis as well. The researchers calculated the citation advantage of OA articles as the “difference between the open access and toll access impacts in terms of a percentage of the latter” (p. 585). Main Results – The authors categorized their findings according to three themes: the growth of APC funded OA papers, the number of OA papers by discipline, and citation advantage of OA vs. TA in general and by subject area. Together, Springer and Elsevier published 18,654 OA papers in the APC journals; this number represents 4.7% of the 396,760 papers published between 2007 and 2011. While the number of OA and TA papers has been growing annually, the number of OA papers has been growing more rapidly compared to the TA papers. In terms of subject areas, Life Sciences had the largest number of OA and TA papers (184,315), followed by Health Sciences (149,341), Natural Sciences (121,274), and Social Sciences and Humanities (42,824). Natural Sciences had the most OA papers (5.7%) in terms of the number of papers in this subject area being OA papers, followed by Social Sciences and Humanities (5.2%), Health Sciences (4.6%) and Life Sciences (3.6%). Overall, the researchers found that the impact values of OA papers were larger than those of the TA papers for each year examined. In considering subject areas, in all disciplines except Life Sciences, the most highly cited paper in the field is an OA paper. In Life Sciences, the most highly cited TA paper had 2,215 citations, compared to the OA paper, which had 1,501 citations. Even though the TA paper had more citations, overall, the OA papers had a higher impact (citation advantage). In Health Sciences, the most highly cited OA paper received 1,501 citations, which is 1.2 times the most highly cited TA paper, with 1,252 citations. The citation advantage for the OA group is 33.29% higher than the TA group. In Natural Sciences, the number of citations from the highest cited OA paper is 1,736, or 2.52 times higher than the most highly cited TA paper. The OA papers in this discipline had a 35.95% citation advantage. In Social Sciences and Humanities, the most highly cited OA paper had 681 citations, compared to the TA paper, with 432 citations. For this subject area, the citation impact of the OA paper is 3.14% higher than the TA paper. Conclusions – In sum, the number of article processing charge funded open access papers has grown tremendously in recent years. Furthermore, open access papers have a citation advantage over toll access papers, both annually and across disciplines.

Traditionally in Germany environmental engineering education took place within the context of a civil engineering programme. There were reasons for this: the beginning of much of what we understand today to be environmental works fell within the parameters of city engineering. There were and are advantages mostly in view of the necessary planning, construction and operation of environmental infrastructure. There are also disadvantages which become more and more pronounced as the field of environmental protection expands: the civil engineer frequently lacks basic training in disciplines such as biology and chemistry and carries a large and sometimes burdensome knowledge of other less relevant subjects. Thus, educators begin to look for alternatives. This paper deals with an alternative that was developed some ten years ago and therefore has proven viable and successful: at the University of Karlsruhe students may choose to major in environmental engineering within the context or on the basis of an economics and business administration curriculum. The basic question here is as to what extent the student masters the field of environmental engineering if he or she has predominantly a solid background in social sciences and very little in natural sciences. The paper will describe the curriculum in structure and intensity and evaluate the accumulated knowledge and suitability of these students in terms of actual environmental problems. This will be done in terms of examination performance parallel and/or relative to traditionally trained civil environmental engineers as well as in terms of topics successfully treated in Masters' theses. In conclusion, it is argued that such combination of curricula should not be confined to economic sciences and environmental engineering but also be planned for legal sciences and environmental engineering.

Researchers not actively seeking information about Open Access and scholars who are not actively informed by their institutions might be concerned about publishing Open Access due to lack of information. Questions such as “Why is Open Access necessary and what do I gain?”, “What happens to my rights as an author?”, and “Why was I not told about this discount before I paid the full APC from my project fund?” might come up. This workshop is directed at representatives of research organizations and universities (e.g. Open Access offices, project coordinators, and interested researchers) on the topic of helping researchers finding answers to these questions and advocating for Open Access in the humanities and social sciences. The workshop seeks to discuss aspects that have been identified by participants priorly as most pressing to discuss. We therefore invite all registered participants to fill in a short survey by 12 October 2020. Field-based learning in higher education is lacking both in practice at colleges and in research within the academic literature. This study aims to address these deficits by exploring the benefits of, and suggesting strategies for, executing field study in higher education across a variety of courses. We report the results of a qualitative research design that included the observation of five courses within the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Approximately eight students per observed course were interviewed three times during their course to assess perceptions of the class, their peers and instructor, the field experiences, and their motivation throughout the course. In total, 130 individual interviews were conducted with 45 students. Results revealed that field-based learning enhances the degree of relatedness students feel with their classmates and instructors, they have a greater degree of intrinsic motivation in the course, and these experiences facilitate learning in ways that may not be replicated in the traditional classroom. In addition, we created a typology of field-based learning, which includes eight different trips that could be employed in higher education courses. We also identified general strategies to improve the execution of these trips.
