Introduction: Turkish population is characterized by its great cultural diversity, thus, Turkish nurses and nursing students often interact with patients of different cultural backgrounds from theirs. Cultural competence is needed to provide qualified contemporary nursing care. This study aimed to explore the literature on the cultural competence of Turkish nurses and nursing students. Methodology: The Whittemore and Knafl review methodology was used to extract, summarize, and synthesize data of 15 primary research articles published between January 2011 and January 2021. The search was done in the Turkish Academic Network and Information Center—ULAKBIM (PubMed, TRDizin, DergiPark). Results: Three themes were identified: cultural competence, cultural-related problems, and importance of training on transcultural nursing. Discussion: Appropriate educational courses on transcultural nursing should be implemented in Turkish nursing schools as well as in continuing education programs for Turkish nurses.

This paper models the operation of Internet 2, the advanced national academic network (RENATA) in Colombia, by as-sessing the fundamental services that it supports and its respective performance. The academic and scientific importance of the article lies on discussing the problem of NRAN networks not being harnessed as scientific tools that may have a domino effect by driving the use of said tools in different education and research centers of the highest level. It is concluded that the connectivity model in the associated networks, i.e., the university networks of every important city within RENATA do not effectively use the advantages of bandwidth capacity, hereby proven with 0.039 Gbps.

Roger Matthews was a British criminologist renowned as a left realist. He was Professor of Criminology at the University of Kent and was part of the National Deviancy Conference. In this interview, Matthews presented a brief context of the British socio-criminological academia in the 1970’s and on. He showed us the academic network between North American and British academics and the rivalry among them. Afterwards, Matthews talked about his impressions on European and Latin American Criminology. His statements led us to reflect about recent debates in the Brazilian criminological field and alert us of some limits of a marginal criminology.

Philosophy of music constitutes a wide area of research as a branch of music. It is observed that studies on the subject have increased in recent years. Since the philosophy of music has an interdisciplinary feature, it has been observed that there are writers from different fields. The aim of this research is to examine the scientific studies (graduate theses and articles) on the Philosophy of Music in Turkey by the bibliographic method. The research is based on the descriptive model and literature review and was performed using the bibliographic method. The study is important in terms of giving researchers a detailed framework and providing clues about the literature. In the research, YÖK (Council of Higher Education) National Thesis Center was used to scan the theses, and Dergipark, ULAKBİM (Turkish National Academic Network and Information Center), and Google Scholar databases were used to scan the articles. As a result of the research, 30 theses related to the Philosophy of Music in Turkey were reached. It was determined that 6 of the theses are doctoral studies and 24 of them are graduate studies. A total of 93 articles on the Philosophy of Music, 62 of which were published in international and 31 in national journals, were reached. When the areas of expertise of the researchers were examined, it was seen that they were among the fields of “Music” (30), “Philosophy” (21), “Music and Philosophy” (4), and “Theology and Philosophy of Religion” (11). However, it was determined that there are writers/researchers from different fields of study such as Communication, Political Science, Business, Economics, Geography, History, Art History, Painting, Literature. Key words: Music, philosophy, philosophy of music, bibliography

Public controversies are an analytical opportunity to study the emergence of issues, the creation and alliance of actors, as well as the articulation of public arenas (politics, society, activism, academia, etc.). This paper analyzes how two actors in Spanish academia emerged, and how they became an expression of the polarized conflict on prostitution, sex work, and sex trafficking. Through a case study, this work traces the emergence and consolidation in the public space of the #universidadsincensura initiative and the International Academic Network for the Study of Prostitution and Pornography (Red Académica Internacional de Estudios sobre Prostitución y Pornografía, Raiepp). Methodologically, the technique of controversy mapping is applied through an analysis of the first phase of the controversy on Twitter with the hashtags #universidadsincensura and #universidadsinprostitucion and the monitoring of the platform’s activities based on active participation in the #universidadsincensura initiative. The analysis shows that both actors emerge in line with the logics of the mediatized public space linked to a presence in media and networks. Endowed with different degrees of institutionalization, Raiepp and #universidadsincensura form the same public, that of those directly or indirectly affected by the public problem surrounding the status of prostitution, for which they seek a solution through a process of enquiry and experimentation that defines democratic participation.

Cybersecurity is an arms race, with both the security and the adversaries attempting to outsmart one another, coming up with new attacks, new ways to defend against those attacks, and again with new ways to circumvent those defences. This situation creates a constant need for novel, realistic cybersecurity datasets. This paper introduces the effects of using machine-learning-based intrusion detection methods in network traffic coming from a real-life architecture. The main contribution of this work is a dataset coming from a real-world, academic network. Real-life traffic was collected and, after performing a series of attacks, a dataset was assembled. The dataset contains 44 network features and an unbalanced distribution of classes. In this work, the capability of the dataset for formulating machine-learning-based models was experimentally evaluated. To investigate the stability of the obtained models, cross-validation was performed, and an array of detection metrics were reported. The gathered dataset is part of an effort to bring security against novel cyberthreats and was completed in the SIMARGL project.

AbstractEvaluating the impact of papers, researchers and venues objectively is of great significance to academia and beyond. This may help researchers, research organizations, and government agencies in various ways, such as helping researchers find valuable papers and authoritative venues and helping research organizations identify good researchers. A few studies find that rather than treating citations equally, differentiating them is a promising way for impact evaluation of academic entities. However, most of those methods are metadata-based only and do not consider contents of cited and citing papers; while a few content-based methods are not sophisticated, and further improvement is possible. In this paper, we study the citation relationships between entities by content-based approaches. Especially, an ensemble learning method is used to classify citations into different strength types, and a word-embedding based method is used to estimate topical similarity of the citing and cited papers. A heterogeneous network is constructed with the weighted citation links and several other features. Based on the heterogeneous network that consists of three types of entities, we apply an iterative PageRank-like method to rank the impact of papers, authors and venues at the same time through mutual reinforcement. Experiments are conducted on an ACL dataset, and the results demonstrate that our method greatly outperforms state-of-the art competitors in improving ranking effectiveness of papers, authors and venues, as well as in being robust against malicious manipulation of citations.
