Forty-one percent of small American retail companies fail to succeed beyond 5 years. The purpose of this multiple case study is to explore strategies small retail business owners need for sustainability beyond 5 years. This study's data were collected through face-to-face interviews with 4 small successful retail business owners located in the United States southeastern region. Based on the conceptual framework of Schumpeter’s innovation theory, the paper provides 3 strategies that may prevent failure and lead to small business sustainability: passion and determination, market development and customer satisfaction, and business model innovation.

This paper is a discussion of a 2020 multiple case study research involving five female owners of retail small and medium enterprise (SME) companies in Lagos State, Nigeria. Multiple data collection methods employed included semistructured interviews, direct observations, review of company documents, and keeping a reflective journal. We established reliability, validity, and data saturation through triangulation. One major finding was that by deploying innovative ideas, business owners were able to overcome challenges and grow sales. The implications for positive social change include the potential to provide both existing and emerging women owned SMEs with the strategies to increase patronage to grow their businesses, thereby contributing to the economic growth of their business, employees, local communities, and the Nigerian national economy.

Racial and ethnic violence continues to be a major problem in the United States. Boston, which experienced hightened racial turmoil since its desegregation process, presents an excellent case study of a police department that faced the problem in a straightforward manner. Traditional methods of classifying and investigating racial incidents were viewed as ineffective. The Boston Police Department developed an innovative approach to the handling of racially motivated crime, which involved implementing a departmentwide policy and creating a specialized police unit. This unit was highly successful in uncovering incidents that under traditional reporting methods appeared commonplace. Upon further examination, these incidents, taken together, indicated persistent and compelling patterns of racial animus. The uncovering of these incidents, the subsequent relabeling of them into “community disorders,” and the development of innovative strategies are described. Policy implications and recommendations are presented. Critics may question the allocation of police resources to a problem that on the surface may appear minor. However, racial violence viewed in the aggregate form has dramatic impact on the quality of life for the victim. A police department that recognizes the significance of this problem is making an important statement about the kind of society we are and what we as a nation stand for.

This is a multiple case study of seven colleges using field methods research to examine institutional life and organizational context. This study determines that community colleges in both Canada and the United States exhibited educational and work behaviors in the 1990s consistent with the globalization process. Education was oriented to the marketplace, and the needs of business and industry received high priority in educational programming. Work within these institutions was valued for and carried out with economic ends: to realize productivity and efficiency.

Pembelajaran Berasaskan Kerja (PBK) merupakan suatu kaedah pembelajaran yang menggabungkan dua medium pembelajaran iaitu pembelajaran teori di institusi pendidikan dan pengaplikasian amali di industri. Melalui penggabungan dua medium pembelajaran ini dapat memberi pendedahan dan pengalaman industri yang relevan mengikut bidang pengajian yang dapat merapatkan jurang ketidaksepadanan di antara kehendak industri dan graduan yang dihasilkan oleh politeknik. Kajian ini dijalankan bertujuan untuk penerokaan pengalaman kebolehpasaran pelajar politeknik dalam tiga program perintis yang menggunakan kaedah PBK iaitu dalam program Diploma Lanjutan Rangkaian, Ijazah Sarjana Muda Teknologi Pengurusan Fasiliti dengan kepujian dan Ijazah Sarjana Muda Teknologi Kejuruteraan Elektronik (Perubatan) dengan kepujian Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif kajian kes pelbagai. Penyelidik menggunakan kaedah temubual secara mendalam dan bersemuka dengan peserta kajian berpandukan protokol separa berstruktur terhadap tiga orang peserta kajian daripada politeknik. Hasil temubual yang telah diperolehi telah di transkrip dan dianalisis secara tematik. Dapatan kajian telah menunjukkan hasil daripada penerokaan pengalaman peserta kajian, penyelidik telah mendapati bahawa ketiga-tiga program telah menunjukkan kebolehpasaran siswazah yang tinggi dimana hampir kesemua siswazah telah mendapat pekerjaan dalam tempoh enam bulan selepas tamat pengajian. Dapatan ini diharapkan dapat memberi implikasi dengan lebih banyak program pendidikan menggunakan kaedah PBK diperkenalkan kerana ianya dapat membantu siswazah untuk mendapatkan pekerjaan selepas tamat pengajian.   Work-Based Learning (WBL) is a learning methodology that combined two workplaces: educational institutions for theoretical learing and industries.for the practical. The combination of these two learning mediums can give the exposure and experience according to the field of study that can bridge the gap and mismatch between the needs of the industry and graduates produced by polytechnics. The aim of this research is to explore the experience of polytechnic graduate employability via three pilot programmes that apply WBL methods; which are the Networking Advanced Diploma, Bachelor of Facility Management with Honours and Bachelor of Computer Engineering Technology (Medical) with Honours.. This study employed a multiple case study of qualitative approach. The data collections in the field study were conducted using in-depth, face-to-face interviews and semi-structured protocol with the three participants from polytechnics. The results of the interviews have been transcribed and analyzed thematically. The findings showed that all the three programs have shown high graduate employability by almost all the graduates have been hired as a worker within six months after the graduation. Based on the results of this study, hopefully more educational programs will using the WBL method because it can help graduates to get a job after the graduation. Communities and regions throughout the United States are investing in the development and enhancement of requisite resources to leverage the growth of mountain bike tourism. However, an understanding of mountain bike tourists’ demographics, travel patterns, trip behaviors, and expenditures is lacking, thereby hampering product and market development efforts. The purpose of this study was to explore the demographics, travel preferences, and travel behaviors of US mountain bike tourists. Through an online survey hosted on a popular mountain bike website, a sample of US mountain bike tourists ( N = 810) was gathered. Data revealed that mountain bike tourists are predominately middle-aged affluent males who take an average of five short-break trips annually of about 400 miles per trip during the spring and summer months, and in the process spend approximately US$400 per trip. Stemming from the results, implications for mountain bike tourism development are discussed.

Capacity building is often described as fundamental to the success of health alliances, yet there are few evaluations that provide alliances with clear guidance on the challenges related to capacity building. This article attempts to identify potential challenges of capacity building in multistakeholder health alliances. The study uses a multiple case study design to identify potential challenges and trade-offs associated with capacity building in four community health alliances in the United States. Multiple challenges were found to be common across the four alliances, including specifying appropriate governance structures and decision-making frameworks, aligning stakeholder interests with the vision of the alliance, balancing short-term objectives with long-term goals, and securing resources to sustain the effort without compromising it. These challenges often involved trade-offs and choices that alliances need to prepare for if they are to approach capacity building in a planful rather than a reactive manner.
