Augustine on the Economy of Angels

Angelology is a major theme in Augustine’s important works such as The City of God, The Literal Meaning of Genesis and Enchiridion. This essay explains Augustine’s theology of angelic economy from three perspectives -- creation, governance and kingdom. 1) The relationship between the angelic economy and the creation: it is here argued that the economic ability of the angels is originated in the intellectual intuition of God and of the creation, as, even prior to creation, angels had already stored the created in their minds as concepts; 2) The relationship between the angelic economy and governance is originated in the concept of “divine apparition.” Angels govern as God’s agents, but their governance is impersonal; 3) The relationship between the angelic economy and the kingdom is originated in the union between the holy angels and the holy people, which occurs in God’s will. In this union, Angels act as guides leading human beings to the kingdom of peace. This essay also points out that Augustine’s angelology is related to his three major theological principles, i.e. the theories of creation, governance and salvation.

The article deals with the foundations of Augustine’s Theology of History, as can be read in Book V of The City of God. A distinction among the pagan belief in destiny and Christian faith is made. The text which is analyzed is considered as the source of Augustine’s Theology of History, in Books XV-XVIII of the City of God, and also of his doctrine about Predestination. The article also deals with the relationship within the process of salvation, between divine grace and human deeds.

The environment and its current components play an essential role in human learning. There is an interactive and mutual relationship between humans and environment. The relationship which is established between the container and the object in urban areas can be a type of learning and learner. The environment brings us together and disperses. People learn in it, become cultured, think, learn, organize themselves, and consolidate. The aim of this study is to explain the concept of learning space in the city as a place of learning through providing theoretical foundations.  The method is used in this study is a qualitative-descriptive method by using theoretical issues in learning and human-environment relationship under discussion in educational and environmental psychology. The finding demonstrated that in urban learning environments, the real needs of human beings are redefined and also they are designed and adopted to learning needs.

Cities often owe their existence to rivers; however, when cities begin to develop, the river turns into a barrier whose crossing becomes one of the more important engineering issues in municipal infrastructure. As a part of nature, a river significantly influences the form of a city. Its development can, in turn, also impact the shape of the river. It becomes an element of urban composition. This mutual dependency is a key problem in spatial planning. Finding the right balance between the natural character of the river, and the introduction of city structures into its course, leads to the creation of a balanced space, naturally utilized by city dwellers. The article analyses examples, which illustrate the relationship between a river and the city, with a particular look at Warsaw, where this relationship has undergone a huge transformation since the beginning of the 21st century.

This article outlines the ongoing development of a locative smartphone app for iPhone and Android phones entitled The Belfast Soundwalks Project. Drawing upon a method known as soundwalking, the aim of this app is to engage the public in sonic art through the creation of up to ten soundwalks within the city of Belfast. This paper discusses the use of GPS enabled mobile devices in the creation of soundwalks in other cities. The authors identify various strategies for articulating an experience of listening in place as mediated by mobile technologies. The project aims to provide a platform for multiple artists to develop site-specific sound works which highlight the relationship between sound, place and community. The development of the app and the app interface are discussed, as are the methods employed to test and evaluate the project.

In an analysis of Thomas Middleton’s A Chaste Maid in Cheapside, this chapter argues that theatre made it possible for people to see that conversion was as much a process of introspection and self-discovery as a series of material transactions that allowed—or forced—human beings into different social, economic, and spiritual states. These transactions were not simply the result of a cynical attempt to turn the tide in pursuit of an unscrupulous benefit (be it social or economic). They were also a way to navigate the processes of conversion itself—the many passageways and alleys that linked the City of God and the Earthly City.

In books I–V of De Civitate Dei, St. Augustine rejects the claim that worship of the pagan gods had brought success in this life, and in books VI–X, the prospect of a happy afterlife. In books XI–XII, Augustine turns from attack to defence, for at this point he initiates his apology for the Christian faith. Books XI and XII document the initial phase of the rise of the two cities, the city of God and the city of this world, beginning with the Creation of the world and the human race. In Book XI, Augustine rejects the theories of Aristotle, Plato and the Epicureans on the creation of the universe and addresses the creation of angels, Satan, the role of the holy Trinity and the importance of numerology in the Genesis account. In Book XII, Augustine is chiefly concerned with refuting standard objections to the Christian tradition, returning to discussion of the Creation, including his calculation, based on the scriptures, that the world was created less than 6,000 years ago. This book is the only edition in English to provide not only a text but also a detailed commentary on one of the most influential documents in the history of western Christianity. It presents Latin text, with facing-page English translation, introduction, notes and commentary.

The term “shortening of time” is related to the Judeo-Christian tradition that announces the end of time as the moment when God, for the sake of the elect, shortens the duration of days and hours, because without this shortening no one would survive (This means that only a God's will could ended Time. The Christian perspective believes that the last days will be chaotic, and God will preclude History, ending time, to save a few men of goodwill.). While in this sense salvation is associated with divine intervention, the thesis of acceleration would reverse the above formula, making human beings responsible for the narrowing of time. But if the shortening of time in the Apocalypse is aimed at the salvation of the World: Where does acceleration, a secular idea of the shortening of time, aim? What is it that justifies the increase in the speed of completing tasks that previously took considerable time, which are today performed in just a few hours? How can we justify the frenzy to obtain what we want in the shortest time possible? In this paper we propose to address this and other questions, in order to show the relationship between a sociological understanding of acceleration with a theological-Christian view of time. In other words, the main claim exposes the transfer of teleology from a religious conception to a historical-worldly conception of time.

This paper studied the concept of the habitability of buildings as a sustainability factor in the living envi­ronment, particularly in the city of Bogotá. The habitability factor stems from the relationship between human beings, the cultural dimension and the environment. Thus, we can say that the habitability factor is an important element in the building design process. Currently in Bogotá there are buildings that do not meet the requirements of the population. In Bogotá only 40% of buildings are of a good quality and a great number of newly produced buildings have made for lower quality living spaces. Consequently, it is important to give an adequate response to these kinds of demands. For thase reasons, this study created a model to evaluate the habitability factor of buildings. This model gives some guidelines for designing sustainable buildings and implementing stategies to design a better urban habitat. Finally, the Habitability model was tested as a pilot in the Primero de Mayo neighbourhood, which is located in the fourth district of Bogotá. The neighbourhood was classified as a cultural heritage site by city hall.

ABSTRACTIn order to think the current culture, the communication practices, the incidence of interference image in the production of new types of knowledge, in this paper we will approach the relationship between image as cinematic apparatus and its conceptual, historical and technical aspects to analyze its performance as narration. In an era in which it appears that the images intervenes in consciousness and in the contemporary representation and thus is becoming an important device in the revelation of realities and the construction of the social imaginary, the present work analyzes the Brazilian film City of God, conducted by director Fernando Meirelles, in 2002, considered a landmark in Brazilian cinema of the period, by the boldness of the language used to convert to images the history of violent gangs fighting over the control of drug trafficking in a community of the city of Rio de Janeiro. We will try, then, to identify the techniques used by the camera as devices able to create the effects needed to immerse the viewer in the narrative of the film.RESUMOCom a preocupação de pensar a cultura atual, as práticas comunicacionais, a incidência da interferência da imagem na produção de novas formas de saber tentaremos abordar neste trabalho a relação da imagem como dispositivo cinematográfico e seus aspectos conceituais, históricos e técnicos para examinar a sua atuação como narração. Numa era em que se constata que as imagens intervêm na consciência e na representação contemporâneas e, portanto, vêm se impondo como um dispositivo importante na revelação de realidades e na construção do imaginário social, o presente artigo visa analisar o filme brasileiro Cidade de Deus, realizado pelo diretor Fernando Meirelles, em 2002, considerado um marco no cinema brasileiro do período, pela ousadia da linguagem utilizada para converter em imagens a história de gangues violen-tas em disputa pelo controle do tráfico de drogas em uma comunidade da cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Tentaremos, então, identificar as técnicas usadas pela câmera como dispositivos capazes de criar os efeitos necessários para imergir o especta-dor na narrativa do filme.
